Guzman Y Gomez @ Fortitude Valley, Brisbane

Over the last months, we have been reading of a wave of Mexican cuisine that has settled into Brisbane but never really got around to trying it out. Mexican is something new particularly to Malaysia with the only options being nachos, fajitas and etc that you get from Chilli's and probably a handful of other restaurants.

In Brisbane, one of the names floating around is Guzman Y Gomez. While it sounds all fancy, it is essentially a fast food outlet that serves Mexican staples; nachos, burrito and tacos and most importantly to others, alcohol. Prices are slightly above your main stream outlets like McDonalds and KFC.

What I like about this outlet at the Emporium is parking, although it is a bit of a hit and miss, since it is quite limited.

I think they have gotten their logo right, nice and bright.

Once you get the expectation that this is a fast food place, the sparse fixtures seems alright.

The nachos was pretty good; fresh guacamole, beans and beef topped generously on crunchy nachos.

Truth to be told, this was the first time i ever had a burrito. What's inside? A choice of chicken, beef or fish, rice and beans, a lovely sauce that ties everything together. While I know of some who are not huge fans of the rice or the beans, I eat anything so this was a good all in one meal. Unless of course, if you need more, you can order some tacos too.

A choice of hard or soft tacos, the hard one probably tasting like the nachos, the soft tortilla with similar burrito fillings minus the rice I believe.

Overall, a good introduction to Mexican food even though I do not have a clue as to how authentic this would be. I don't see why I wouldn't come back but that being said, with so many mexican places to try, it might be a while before I pop by for a revisit.

Verdict: 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. Cheap mexican food with the option of beer to go with it, whats there not to like?

Hokkaido Ramen Santouka @ Tokyo Street, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur

Ramen, oh ramen, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways..

Your noodles so springy and firm to the bite. Your broth utterly delicious to the last drop.

I love eating all types of noodles, be it Chinese, Italian or Japanese. Ramen is one of my favorite noodles.. not only is the noodle tasty, the broth is also fantastic. Hokkaido Ramen Santouka reached our shores recently and have opened their first Malaysia branch in Tokyo Street, Pavilion KL. I have read so much about it, so I prayed it would be good.

Since opening there is always a queue outside this restaurant. I've been to Tokyo Street three times and on each visit there was a queue at this outlet. On the day we decided to eat here, we arrived at 12.15pm and had to wait 15-20 minutes before we got to the front of the queue. We were offered a laminated menu to look through while waiting and placed our order before we got to our seats. For some reason, the pork cheek ramen (Tokusen Toroniko) was not listed on the laminated menu hence I totally forgot about it until I saw the display of dishes at the front.

Inside, the restaurant was packed to the brim. Customers come, sit down, wait for their noodles, eat for their noodles and then leave. Not really a place you'd wanna bring your date. Since we did not want to wait another 15 minutes, we were asked to share a table with other diners.

Packed at all times

They serve complimentary ice water with the ramen. I still remember the Japanese chef from GokuRaku Ramen telling us that the only drink we should have while eating ramen is cold water, just like they do in Japan.

Oishii...

Shio ramen (salt flavor) is the signature ramen here. The mild, pearl-colored tonkotsu soup is made by simmering pork bones, vegetables, dried fish, kelp, and other special ingredients for 20 hours. Apparently, the soup is never boiled and only simmered since this is the perfect temperature for a delicious soup. I certainly had no complaints about the soup. It was light and creamy, and filled with porky goodness. I almost licked my bowl clean.

The ramen noodles here are medium-sized and are like the ones I am accustomed to. The noodles were served with bamboo shoots, jelly ear, cha shu, fish cake and a pickled plum. The cha shu (pork) was lovely, with the right proportions of fat and lean meat, as well as being very tender and well marinated. I ordered the small portion and was only given 1 piece of cha shu. Overall, I enjoyed this bowl of ramen very much. Even as I left the shop, the delicious flavours of the soup still lingered in my mouth. Simply fabulous.

Shio ramen (RM22.50 for small)

The noodles come in 3 different sizes; small, medium and large. I would say that the small portion of ramen here is just nice for me.
!
They did a very good job with the Komi Tamago (Flavoured Boiled Egg); it was flavoursome and best of all, the egg yolk was still runny. How beautiful is that.

Komi Tamago (RM2)

Hubby had the Miso Ramen (Soybean Paste Flavor), which apparently is made from a different pork broth to bring out the flavour of the miso paste. The ingredients are the same as the shio ramen, except that this doesn't have the pickled plum. I had a taste of the soup and this was slightly saltier and more earthy than the shio ramen.

Firm and springy noodles

The display at the front of the restaurant to tempt you

Always a! queue, this was taken when we left the restaurant

Verdict: I really liked the shio ramen, however the queue and seating arrangements can be a little off-putting. But for you ramen, I shall return...

Vias del Vero Tempranillo Cabernet Sauvignon Rosado

I can't keep up. For three weeks I've had today marked in the Outlook calendar as Tempranillo Day, for some bright spark has designated today as a celebration of this classic Spanish grape. Then I note, over this week, a gamut of tweets marking today as Cabernet Day.

How is one to cope?

Australia appears to have embraced #cabernetday with a vengeance. Tweets I also read came in from Argentina, an obscure village in France and from a wine merchant in England cracking open a few bottles of cabernet for an impromptu, in store, tasting. Not to be out-wined the #tempranillo crowd held a little cork-popping on a bridge in Madrid and various other 'activities'.

Tonight I'm at home with a plate of tuna, tomato and cream pasta. Alone, apart from the new neighbour, Craig, pummelling the intervening walls hanging pictures. Me and a bottle of ros.

Vias del Vero Tempranillo Cabernet Sauvignon Rosado, 2010, Somontano, Spain [Adegga / Snooth] is the bottle shoved between the peas and the block of 'sauce' in the freezer for it requires a chill.

"From the rolling hills of Somontano in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains, this appealing Rosado is bright pink in colour, with aromas of fresh red fruits and wild berries, perfectly integrated over a lightly herbaceous background. Delicious juicy fruit on the palate with well balanced acidity and a crisp finish"

Yeh, what they said...

Vias del Vero Tempranillo Cabernet Sauvignon Rosado, 2010, Somontano is available from Tanner, Noel Young Wines, Iberica and other selected independents for 7.29.

Jaya 33 Merdeka Food Crawl The Finale Part 6 Vintry Jaya 33

Having a chance to visit 6 different restaurants serving all different types of cuisines in 1 dinner really a tiring one to handle. We were lucky to have Vintry as the last one to visit as they were famous for their finger food that goes along with their wines and beers.

The place were having a very cozy ambiance and relaxing environment without the usual pub heart throbbing musics. You can sit here all night to chill out after work. A wide variety of vintage and young wines from multi country are there awaiting for you.

Different wine racks separate by country and type

One of the vintage wine available here. The famous Chateau Leoville Poyferre from Saint Julien Province in France.

Due to too many food tasting in one night, I opt for a cool glass of beer instead to wash everything down. Next round when I am visiting Vintry again, I definitely will checkout their wine machines which serve wines at its best condition and temperature. ! You can try all sorts of wine at a very affordable price with this machine via the prepaid card.

State of the art wine vending machine

With all the great booze, the finger food must be good to pair with the drinks. For this Merdeka Food Crawl promo period, a few featured items will be having a 20% discount off.
