French food, sans le snootiness, sil vous plait

Topshelf aims to become a fixture in the neighbourhood.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 The indecipherable menu; the fancy bouteilles d eau; the fear of committing a faux pas like calling for the mayder-dee. These are a few reasons why many French restaurants get their snooty and exclusive reputation, which causes many casual diners from stepping into one regularly.

Exclusivity and snootiness is not the reputation restaurant owner Yeap Huey Yang wants to project with Topshelf, the casual French restaurant that opened in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) a month ago.

Traditional French food is very simple, says Yeap, but many diners tend to overlook that point, having their judgement clouded by preconceived notions of what French food is: Classy, Expensive, and Hard to pronounce.

Ive always been partial to French, says Yeap. Unfortunately, its not very accessible here because of two things: intimidation of places where you go for French food, as well as the prices. Thats why you only have a certain sort of people who get to sample French food repeatedly.

Its a shame because French food is very simple, which suits the Malaysian palate well. I mean, we enjoy our seafood here, our Fatty Crabs, Lala Chong and the French do this really well, except that they have to call it bouillabaisse-lah, he jokes.

The introduction of casual and traditional French cuisine isnt easy, especially among locals who love their Pasta Carbonaras drenched in sauce, or their pizzas stuffed with sausages and pineapples. The escargots starter, for example, is prepared in the classical way, which means it is not drowned in garlic-butter sauce.

While the garlic and butter is what keeps us going for more, the escargot gets lost; it becomes the chewy stuff that gets in the way. It can be challenging to get customers to understand the way we prepare our escargots, but it gives us a starting poi! nt to ge t the conversation going, says Yeap.

Then theres the Marseille-style Bouillabaisse, which resembles a big bowl of crab curry, resulting in expectations of spicy bursts and strong flavours. But thats far from what it tastes like bouillabaisse is very understated, so in a way, if you dont prep a person for that, it can be underwhelming. Rather, its a balanced seafood stew where you can pick out the individual flavours of each component the mussels, fish, crabs even if its all mixed up. The seafood is not just the chewy stuff.

The interior of Topshelf... cosy and not at all intimidating.
A casual affair

Yeap is no stranger to the restaurant business, with Topshelf being his sixth following the now-closed Cincin Champagne Lounge in Changkat Bukit Bintang. Where the restaurants and bars in Changkat attracted a well-dressed, ready-to-party crowd, Topshelf is decidedly located in the low-key but affluent neighbourhood of TTDI.

Here, Yeap wants diners to feel unburdened and unpretentious; and the functional dcor reflects that wish. The dining tables, for example, are custom-made from stainless-steel kitchen worktops; communal long tables facilitate large groups that want to mingle; theres even a bar for sports fans to watch their live footie matches.

We want to be as inclusive as possible, he says. Its not a trend-driven restaurant; we want to be a fixture in the neighbourhood, which explains what he have on the menu, the prices, the way its done up. Im not really concerned about what happens in the next six months as much as the next three to four years.

Speaking of prices, where one would expect to pay a princely sum for a good French meal at finer French restaurants, prices at Topshelf are relatively affordable. Popular starterslike escargots (RM24++) and Pesto Capellini (RM20++), combined with Bouillabaisse (RM43++), Duck Confit (RM33+! +), and Coq Au Vin (RM28++), and finished withChampagne mille-feuille (RM21++) or Panna Cotta (RM18++) can make for a fine meal that wont leave you broke.

Another point of pride that Yeap wants to highlight is the small, but select wine list that was personally handpicked. We have the time and environment we dont have a high turnover rate so we can afford to introduce wines at the prices that we do. Nineteen ringgit for a glass of house pouring wine (RM98 for a bottle) is not expensive for anywhere you go, especially for Old World wines, he says.

I keep it well within the range of RM135 to RM145 a bottle to be shared among three friends, You can find comparable prices in other restaurants, definitely, but you wont get the same quality wine on selection, he says.

Getting the Young Foldies to FRIM (Forest Research Institute Malaysia)

It was another wonderful experience here at FRIM, with natural forest setting, shady and a vast cycling space. This was the toughest part of the day, going up to a waterfall on a very uneven stony track. Going downhill was fun.
Eventually we reached the waterfall, Jack enjoyed the cool water.

This is one good place for a cycling outing and it's near the city. Thumb Up for FRIM.

Ichiro Sushi Bar

Part Three of the Isetan 1U Eat Paradise expedition, this time checking out the sushi bar.

Ichiro is the place to relish raw seafood; start with the chutoro (medium-fatty tuna belly), with five thick, tender and terrifically tasty slices for RM42++.

Inimitable uni sushi, topped with luscious, sweet-savory sea urchin (RM15++ per piece).

Hiramasa carpaccio (RM30++). Prices might seem slightly steep for a shopping mall, but every cut here is a cut above, matching the caliber of five-star hotel outlets.

Sea eel sushi (RM9++ per piece). With several Japanese dudes doing the dicing behind the bar, there's no complaining about the food, but service at the tables is also commendably ef! ficient.

Natto-and-squid sushi (RM7++ per piece), an interesting pairing that works incredibly well.

Signature Ichiroll (RM35++), a whopper stuffed with more seafood than rice. Fillings include a fulfilling mix of tuna, anago, prawns, kanpyo, crab stick, cucumber, egg, shiitake and lettuce.

Alas, alcohol is absent here (well, except for beer), so give us green tea instead, hot and cold.

Italy emerges as best food destination among Brits, survey shows

Britons named Italy as the European country with the best food in a recent survey. Afp pic
LONDON, May 12 Britons named Italian cuisine the best in Europe, followed by British, French and Spanish fare, according to a new poll.

In a survey of more than 2,000 people in the UK, 30 per cent of respondents named Italy as the European country with the best national cuisine. Next, 22 per cent of Brits gave their own cuisine a nod. France got 12 per cent of the vote, followed by the Spanish with six per cent and Greece with three per cent.

The survey results also revealed demographic splits: respondents aged 55 and older were more likely to stay true to their roots and name British cuisine as the best, while younger respondents aged 18 to 34 were more likely to say they preferred Italian food. Italian fare was also more popular among women.

British cuisine has succeeded in shedding its poor reputation as a culinary wasteland thanks to Michelin-starred chefs and food celebrities like Heston Blumenthal and Jamie Oliver whove become international food personalities.

As the survey, carried out by online travel site Holidayhypermarket.co.uk points out, 42 foods from the UK have also been granted protected geographical status under European law for everything from fish, meat, cheese and produce. Think Scottish salmon, Cumberland sausage, and Yorkshire pudding.

Meanwhile, in an effort to help consumers gauge the travel costs of destinations around the world, online accommodation site Hotels.com also released a Club Sandwich Index, which surveyed the average costs of a club sandwich in 750 hotels around the world. The priciest city? Paris at US$33.10 (RM113). Afp-Relaxnews

Hello, New Orleans!

new orleans

Some cities are just filled with magic. London has magic. St.Louis has spooky magic. I think my Venice home has a good amount of sparkle magic. But New Orleans New Orleans is aalll magic.

I was lucky enough to visit this special city last week. Because it was my first visit to New Orleans, I.. a) melted in the humidity. b) was horrified by my frizzy hair. c) drank daiquiris in the streets. d) ate beignets several SEVERAL times.

Want a peek? Here we go!

new orleans

In every new city visit, its really nice to start with a map.

Two bigstreets and a curve in the grid.

new orleans

Evening hours in the French Quarter.

Horse heads everywhere.

new orleans

Evening hours outside of Saint Louis Cathedral.

Dark and romantic.

new orleans

Evening hours inside this smokey, candlelit bar.

There was piano mu! sic, peo ple huddled in conversation, and a really smelly drunk dude that danced me into a corner.

Tell me youve been danced into a corner thats real.

new orleans

Ham, butter, and brie on a baguette is one of the best lunches EVER. Thank you St. James Cheese Company!

Louisiana beer is also as fine as could be. Ive come to appreciate the wonders of the Strawberry Abita.

new orleans

Theres a salad in that Bloody Mary and Im totally drinking this pineapple daquiri in the street!

Its like a party everyday!

new orleans

Any menu that serves Champagne and Fries is a menu I want to be reading.

I mean come on!

new orleans

Late night beignets at Cafe du Monde.

Yes these were the second round of beignets I had eaten on this day.

Yes.. I ate a whole order myself.

Sometimes I have trouble sharing.

new orleans

I spent a day at Jazzfest!

Crawfish bread. Cold beer. Gospel tent. And Ne-yo singing R&B Jamzzzzz!

new orleans

Is this magic JR and the Inside Out Project!?

I think it is!

new orleans

Look how rad humanity looks!

new orleans

I was on a strictbeignet diet.

new orleans

In New Orleans I got to meet my oldest blog friend, Evan!

Evan and I have been chatting for the past four years. She knows about various boy and cake disasters. It was so nice to meet her and squeeze her pregnant belly. Love!

new orleans

The cemeteries in New Orleans. So old and worn.

This particular cemetery had damaged headstones. These piled up pieces feel beautiful and unfortunate.

new orleans

The cemeteries are beautiful and also put just a tinge of fear in my heart. I dont know what that is

New Orleans is magic. The food. The sites. The people. The energy you can feel it in the air.

Pro tips:

There is no need to lift your top for beads you can get those anywhere. Theyre even handing from trees no joke.

Order more beignets than you think youll need because youll need them.

Stand in line for fried chicken at Coops Place.

Dont share your crawfish bread at Jazzfest.

Thank the people that make New Orleans magic.
