Bourbon Orange Coriander Barbecue Sauce

IMG_2203

This is one of the most satisfying things Ive made in a long time.

Its sauce. Its just sauce.

I know.

But would you look at it. Rich, burgundy colored, speckled with coarse black pepper and onion bits!

Shut. It. Up.

Wheres the chicken. Tell me you brought the chicken.

IMG_2115

Were making this sweet barbecue sauce in 10 easy steps.

Step 1: saute chopped onions. Do it.

IMG_2119

Step 2: add minced garlic. Saute that too.

IMG_2130

Step 3: add bourbon. Yes.

I mean obviously.

If you dont want to add bourbon. Guess what? You dont have to.

IMG_2135

Step 4: add orange juice and orange zest.

IMG! _2151

Step 5: that was cider vinegar. Add that too.

IMG_2161

Step 6: molasses. Sexy.

IMG_2166

Step 7: Worcestershire sauce. Necessary and proper.

IMG_2170

Step 8: brown sugar and white nail polish.

IMG_2176

Step 9: ketchup x 2.

IMG_2189

Step 10: Add salt and pepper. Boil and simmer and simmer and serve.

IMG_2217

This barbecue sauce is sweet and deep. Its tinted with the flavors of bourbon and orange, spiced with coarse black pepper and coriander, and brightened by cider vinegar.

The cooked onions and garlic remain and little minced bits in this sauce if that bugs the heck out of you, you cou! ld total ly put this sauce in the blender to smooth out. Be careful blending hot liquids, leave a bit of room in the lid for the mixture to breathe.

Sweet, orange, slightly spicy what a beautiful barbecue glaze. I love that we can make this happen!

The chicken? I used The Pioneer Womans recipe for Barbecue Chicken.

Bourbon Orange Coriander Barbecue Sauce

Print this Recipe!

makes about 2 1/2 cups

3 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1/2 cup bourbon

1/2 cup orange juice

1/2 cup cider vinegar

1 cup ketchup

1/2 cup brown sugar (1/3 cup if youd like it less sweet)

1/4 cup molasses

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon orange zest

3/4 teaspoon ground coriander

1 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

Heat olive oil over medium heat in a medium saucepan. Add onions and saute until translucent and slightly browned, 3 to 5 minutes. Add garlic and saute for 1 minute more. Lower heat to low and add bourbon. Scrape the browned bits of onion and garlic from the bottom of the pan as the bourbon heats. Add the remaining ingredients. Bring mixture to a simmer and cook for 30 to 45 minutes, until reduced and thickened.

Mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Serve over cooked chicken, on top of meat loaf, cheese burgers or veggie burgers.

Italian @ Michaelangelos, Solaris Mont Kiara

Kim and I were craving for Japanese Buffet and decided to give Tenji at Solaris Mont Kiara a try arriving only to find the restaurant was closed for renovations. We decided to give Michaelangelos a try since it was just downstairs.

Bruschetta with Pate
Bruschetta with Pate
A simple but good starter. The Bread Slices were toasted giving it a nice crunch to be dipped with the mild Pate, Arugula and a Sweet Jam which I don't know the flavor of.

Ox-Tail Soup
Ox-Tail Soup
Tasted more like Malaysian Style Ox-Tail Soup. Broth was delicious but the Ox-Tail was very tough.

Cream of Mushroom Soup
Cream of Mushroom Soup
The Mushroom Puree had a strong flavor and was very creamy.

Prawn Salad
Prawn Salad
For RM 28 it was a rip-off. The Prawns given were very small and they only gave two pieces. S! alad dre ssing was so-so.

Sizzling Seafood Marinara Spaghetti
Sizzling Seafood Marinara Spaghetti
Pasta was just a little over cooked but the flavor was good. One could taste the Prawn Flavor infused into the Marinara Sauce and most of the Seafood wasn't overcooked.

Korea Trip 2011 Chicken Galbi, Gangnam, Seoul

Now were talking right ? Finally its the food post. And finally I have time to sit in front of the macbook at home. Been quite busy this 2 weeks. But not to worry, things are kinda back to normal now.

In case you missed out on the rest, here are they

1. Seoul Highlights (photos)

2.Itinerary and Hotel Astoria

3.How to get from Incheon Airport to Seoul downtown

4.First taste of local food (in a 24 hrs restaurant)
5.Paris Baguette
6. Everland (Pt 1, how to get there)

7. Everland (Pt 2)

-

So after Everland, we took the bus back to Gangnam. On the main street (where krispy kreme is) Turn into the lanes and you see some few streets of brightly litsignageandtteobokki vendors. We were looking for dinner obviously from the lack of real food in amusement park (as usually aint it?) We ended up in this Galbi restaurant. It looks like a big huge sizzling hot plate smack right in the middle of the table. So curious enough because its one of the first days we are in Korea, we went in, sat, and let the spicy-adventure begin!

Because I know my memory wont serve me well enough to remember the pricing for each dish, or the name of the restaurant (because its written in Hangul anyway) here are more pictures!

G A L B I GALBI (No, Im just guessing tee hee hee)

Its similar to hot plate (like Pepper Lunch) but without the sizzle. Still the same amount of smoke. :P We got the Seafood and chicken galbi for 2-3 pax (there were 4 of us to share that portion, in fact I think it can go to 5 pax (with rice) because it was SO SO SO SPICY!! but OH SO YUM!!)

Pa-jeon. Korean Pancake. I havent found a really good one here in KL (I honestly dont eat out that much) Infact, those in Sydney were actually pretty similar to what they have in Korea. Juicy seafood, Chinese chives, and pancake just thick enough to cover the seafood. Ah, why didnt we eat more of these

Udon with spicy paste. The udon in Korea are good too!! Its Q and not floury / mushy. But the spicy paste was oh so spicy! Its like a concentrated chili paste and its meant to be added into the hot plate to be cooked with the rest of the ingredients.

Here comes the horror! Chicken marinated with some spicy red pepper sauce (Im guessing its a spicier version of gojujang) The pan is about 20 inches diameter and you really need it to be that big. They will then add leek and onions, and other ingredients such as mushroom or seafood if you have ordered that. Overwhelming.

In goes the rest of the ingredients! Leeks are huge :P Mushrooms are abundance *yay*

Alas, it makes you wonder how much chili has gone into the process of making this dish. Not to worry! It wasnt all spicy and nothing else. Its a kick at your tongue (and lips) but you can still taste the freshness of the ingredients and the peppery gojuchang (I just assume it is somewhat similar to it) This wont be your cup of tea if you cant take spicy food. But yum I love LOVE LOVE spicy food :P

If youre thinking of dieting, no it wont happen because you need alot of rice to eat with this Chicken and Seafood Galbi. trust me.

Streets of Gangnam.

Next it will be Zipwire in Gapyeong Wharf to Nami Island. One of the best highlights of the trip ;) Stay tuned.

Sights and Sounds of Boston - Part 2

Boston, killed my feet. I cannot believe this. When I was in Hong Kong,I could walk for eight hours without stopping. I remembered walking from Hong Kong to Central, Central to Admiralty and Admiralty to Wan Chai.THEREFORE, it made no sense for a short tour around MIT (Yeah, that MIT) to kill my feet.

Also, the best pair of shoes that I'd owned failed me completely. The soles are wearing off! I own the exact same pair - that pair is currently residing in my lovely home back in KL - and that pair of shoes DID NOT fail me in two of my HK trip, which involves so much of walking that it felt like I was a SA all over again.

Anyway, I am going to call up my mom and rant about my failed errand to her. So, here are some eye food, if you even find it delicious. I personally think it's bland and needs some spicing. Although, some may like it bland.

12 Hours Food Marathon Buffet @ Sunway Pyramid Tower Hotel RM68++ only!

I had previously shared my experiences dining at The Atrium Cafe here at the Sunway Pyramid Tower Hotel HERE & HERE , and I could personally vouch that the spread here is the best value- for- money buffet in town.

However, recently Sunway had totally outdone themselves with theintroduction of the amazing12 Hours Food Marathon Buffet that runs every Sunday & public holidays from 11am to 11pm!
This is officially one buffet that you wouldnt want to miss; imagine 12 hours of gorging on a smorgasbord of delicious food, and being able to take breaks in between; yes you read right, youre allowed to LEAVE the cafe, go out, leave Sunway Pyramid, go home, take a nap, splash in Sunway Lagoon, play some games at the extreme park, watch a movie..ANYTHING!
With this stamp, you will be allowed entry into the buffet area again & resume gluttony activities at any time you wish throughout the 12 hour duration.

2011-06-26 20.05.26

Oh, I know, being typical Malaysians youre going to ask So, is the food the same for 12 hours? right?
Well, the answer is a resounding NO. Food for lunch (between 12-5pm) is almost 70% different (main courses wise) from the food that were served earlier in the day.
Heck, Im a typical Penangite, very kiam-siap (stingy, cost conscious, tight-fisted, whatever you may call it) but I would pay RM68++ for this deal! Its literally one whole day! s meals covered, coming up to only about RM10++ per meal.

SAM_3832

Also, to demonstrate how one could stay in the vicinity of Sunway for the whole 12 hours & eat non-stop, a bunch of bloggers were invited for a full day out courtesy of Sunway Resorts & Hotel.

SAM_3771

We started off with brunch at 12pm, followed by a wantan (prawn dumplings) challenge, where JonYKT, fresh from the Standard Chartered Marathon took the prize for gobbling down 23 wantans in 3 mins flat!

2011-06-26 12.06.16

Cheers to that skinny dude man!:P

2011-06-26 12.26.26

You can catch the eating action in this video!

And heres me posing with the cauldron of 200 wantans!

Sunway Fd marathon

After the heart-stopping wantan gorging, we were given Retail Therapy time to go ! around t he whole of Sunway Pyramid (which has HUNDREDS of retail outlets where you could buy almost anything under the sun!) and a complimentary half body massage by Mandara Spa.

Heres some of the bloggers enjoying their massage.

SAM_3732

and heres me enjoying mine!:P

Sunway Fd marathon1

Heh, a bit of shopping & a nice relaxing massage done and we are back in business! Eating business thats it.

Round 2 commences for lunch, followed by the Make your Own Sandwich & Eat as Many As You Can!. Seriously, this was one full day of gluttony through & through.

I do not know how they did it, stuffing ham, tuna, salmon into bread rolls & stuffing those rolls into theirmouths

SAM_3759

Next on the itinerary was the Sunway Extreme Park for a go-kart session!
The walk from The Atrium Cafe to the Extreme Park probably burned the calories of ONE bun but I was hungry by the time we reached the go-kart area & couldnt wait to get back to the buffet! :P
Nevertheless, we all had fun flooring theaccel! erator o n the track & some of the cheekier bloggers even drifted at the corners, causing the track marshalls to blow their whistles incessantly!

SAM_3774

I was err excited! ;p

SAM_3779

All geared & ready to go!

SAM_3783

The rest of us camwhored while waiting for our turn. Hehe:P

SAM_3785

SAM_3787

Another group!

SAM_3795

And after we headed back to The Atrium for tea! It was about 5pm ++ and we noticed that the staff was changing the buffet spread. New dishes took place of the ones in the earlier part of the day.

Yummy salted egg prawns.

Sweet & Sour Red Snapper.

SAM_3815

SautedBeef Fillets with Onions..

SAM_3819

All of us made a beeline for the desserts & fruits while I myself gobbled some ice kacang to cool down from go-kart while awaiting the next challenge The Spicy Popiah Eating Contest!

These spring rolls were evil! Made in the kitchen with the Chefs special chilli sauce, each is supposedly tongue-numbing spicy.

SAM_3827

And here we go..another bunch of spontaneous & cheeky bloggers all game to any challenges! I felt my stomach lining burn just watching them eat those blood red chilli spring rolls. .. *shudders*..

!

And then its dinner time! Piping hot & fresh selection of food was ready at 6pm & we are all ever-ready to tuck in again. On that particular evening, there was a special section for Middle Eastern cuisine.
I love this stew of beans, carrots, peas & corns. Lovely to eat with some warm pita pockets!

SAM_3800

SAM_3798

Grilled chicken withMediterranean spices.

SAM_3802

SAM_3805

Fish.

SAM_3806

Deep fried Chicken wings.

SAM_3807

And these lamb rolls were new too (for the dinner spread)!.

SAM_3829

As with the fresh oysters, prawns & mussels! Seriously, for RM68++, I do not see any reasons to complain at all.

SAM_3830

Our bloggers day out were FREE & EASY after the popiah eating competition & most of us stayed on & gorge ourselves silly til 11pm. Some went to watch a movie, some went home to shower & came back again for dinner/supper while others went for more retail therapy.

Heres the rest of the pics of the food taken throughout the day! For more pictures of the spread you can expect from The Atrium Buffet, click HERE & HERE !
