Savory Cornmeal and Chive Waffles with salsa and eggs

IMG_6473

Theres something about a giant stack of waffles topped with butter, powdered sugar, and maple syrup that puts me in an un-fightable, resistance resistant, afternoon coma. That really and I mean reeeeaaalllyyy pisses offthe workaholic in me. She hates napping. The waffle-aholic in me? Well obviously she thinks her workaholic counterpart should just chill the heck out.

Ive tried to appease both sides of my w-aholics and its not about trading waffles for spelt toast. No that just cant happen.

Switch up the waffle! Make it a savory dream! Top it with salsa and an egg! This way my waffle-aholic self gets all of her warm waffle goodness. and my workaholic self doesnt need a resentful nap. Take note.

Please tell the waffle-aholic within you that this dish is supreme for either breakfast or dinner.

Savory waffles are IT!

Heres what youll need:

A waffle iron. I know I know what a pain. Theres really no other way to make waffles though. Perhaps you could turn this dish into savory pancakes but its not quite the same. Waffle iron. Its asplurge!!

Cornmeal gives these waffles a really wonderful crunch. I used a more coarse cornmeal. Bite!

Chives and parsley kick up the flavor of these waffles. Subtle onion and herb. Its perfect.

Black! pepper! Coarse and generous.

Salsa and eggs! Cook up and egg and top it off with salsa.

With these few ingredients, I swear youll feel like youre doing everything right.

This batter is beautifully thick and subtly flavored.

Cornmeal and scallions mysteriously take things from ok to uh-mazing.

You might choose, as I did, to enjoy these waffles with a friend, on a front porch, under a gloomy grey sky, on a slightly chilly weekend morning.

Or! Or or or you could plop down in from of the television and watch reruns of Law and Order SVU.

OR! You could eat them standing in your kitchen, trying to get your cat to stop sticking his face in the open waffle iron.

I usually opt for the later option. Thats just how I choose to live or something.

Savory Cornmeal and Chive Waffles with salsa and eggs

serves 2

Print this Recipe!

1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup cornmeal (fine cornmeal is good, but I love a coarse grind for this recipe)

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper

1/3 cup melted unsalted butter

2 large eggs

1 1/4 cup buttermilk

3 tablespoons chopped scallions

2 tablespoons chopped parsley

salsa and eggs

Set your waffle iron in a level, clean surface and turn on to preheat.

In a large bowl, whisk! togethe r flour, cornmeal, baking powder, sugar, baking soda, and salt.

In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, butter, and buttermilk. Add the wet ingredients, all at once to the dry ingredients. Add the scallions and parsley. Stir until just incorporated. Try not to over-mix the batter. If a few lumps remain in the batter, thats ok.

Cook according to your waffle machine instructions.

While the waffles cook, fry up some sunny side up eggs in a nonstick frying pan.

Serve waffles with fresh salsa and hot fried eggs. Top with extra chives and parsley. Waffles are best served immediately.

Note: Allow waffles to cool completely. Store them in pairs in ziplock bags and store in the freezer. In the morning, gently reheat waffles in the toaster or toaster oven. Best toaster breakfast ever. You can even turn the waffles into bread for sandwiches just trust me. Awesome.

pH Pastry House, Jalan Utara, Kuala Lumpur

Usually when we bring the kids out with us, we have to plan in advance -- make sure the restaurant is kids-friendly, comfortable as well as having food that the kids will eat. Recently, we took them for a daytrip to Doubletree by Hilton to use their pool as well as some "kai kai"(going out to town). At first, we contemplated whether we should just eat in the hotel for convenience sake, but it rained the whole afternoon and we were sick of staying in all day, so decided to go out for a drive and eat.

I remember reading about pH Pastry House and it wasn't too far from Doubletree by Hilton. However, leaving the hotel at 5pm was a really bad idea since we ended up stuck in the jam. The journey that should have taken 5 minutes took more than 30 minutes. It didn't help that we couldn't locate the restaurant straight away, but luckily the kids were very well behaved in the car.

Swimming dog comes with us for dinner

The restaurant / cafe has an industrial sort of look, at first glance it could be mistaken for one of The Big Group's restaurants due to similarities in the furniture and menu. Do take a moment to look at the art around the restaurant, they are quite interesting. Not sure what it's called, but basically when you look at it, it just looks like dots... move a little further, squint your eyes a little and you will see the "art". The one by the front entrance is Mona Lisa.. if you can't see it, try using your mobile phone to view (ask the staff and they will tell you the best way to see it too!).

Mona Lisa -- can you see it? (move away from your computer slightly and squint!)

Hubby had the ice-lemon tea while I (or rather Baby C) had the vanilla shake. To be honest, I expected the vanilla shake to taste more like vanilla ice-cream but it tasted rather watery.

Ice Lemon Tea (RM8.90)

Vanilla shake (RM8.50)

The menu has been revamped slightly since our visit. Click here to view the latest menu. We enjoyed the food that we ordered here. Portions a! re reaso nable for the price charged.

To start, we had the Golden Calamari (RM9.90). Nice snack, a tad oily though. Baby C loves poached egg, so we ordered Eggs Any Style (RM7.90) -- you have the option of scrambled, poached, hard boiled, soft boiled and it was served with ciabatta toast and butter. The toast was pretty good, but even Baby C commented the egg looked a bit sad (very small and served in a teeny ramekin). I think it would have been better if they served two eggs on the ciabatta toast itself and she would have been happier.

Loved the chunky mushroom soup here (RM9), a hearty delicious soup with lots of mushroom bits.

I have a thing for mascarpone and mushroom -- influenced by the fabulousfunghi pizza we usually we have at Ben's General Food Store in BV1. So when I saw the pasta with mascarpone and wild mushroom (RM15.90) on the menu, I had to order it. It was really good, the mascarpone adds a rich creamy flavour to the pasta and the lemon zest/juice added a slight zing to the sauce.

They have a good selection of desserts here, but we only got some macarons to take away with us. Our favorite was the Euphoria Rose (the filling is really nice, with a slight flowery perfume). I have to say most of the filling was rather good, but texture wise it is chewy but a little gritty. Other flavours we tried were Infinite Vanilla, Salted Milk Chocolate and Caramel (RM3.90 each).

Pretty colours

Nice filling

Verdict: We definitely loved the ambience here. Would we ! return? Yes, since the food here is pretty good, wallet-friendly as well as ample parking outside the restaurant.

Verona Trattoria @ Section 17, Petaling Jaya

Good Italian restaurants in Klang Valley are not necessarily expensive and are out to hurt your wallet. One example would be Verona Trattoria at Section 17 that just opened its doors about 3 weeks ago. Currently it is being managed by a chripy husband and wife team who came to Malaysia from Indonesia on the MM2H (Malaysia My Second Home) program.
But just so you know, most of the food here have had the recipes modified to suit our heavy Malaysian taste bud. So you could say they are not that authentically Italian, which is meant to be simple and generally light in flavor. Well, I cant really blame them for this else there would be an endless complaints of their food being tasteless and bland.

Since they are new, weekly specials are being introduced to test the market. If the specials are popular enough among the customers, then they might consider putting them up as permanents on the menu. Even though the ravioli was highly recommended by the lady boss as the customers absolute favorite, we wanted to play safe and had the other special instead, Grilled Salmon with Lemon Butter Sauce @ RM32.

grilled-salmon

Because the salmon is of sashimi-grade, you can have it medium rare if you wanted, which I think is a pretty good idea. Ours was skillfully grilled to a tender and flaky finish, just perfect. I especially enjoyed the crispy skin at the bottom where the most of the flavor is concentrated at.

three-mushroom-risotto

Saffron Risotto with Three Mushrooms @ RM34 was another special that we had. The rice was very tasty, creamy with a wonderfully strong saffron aroma while the mushrooms were delightful too. The trickiest part in cooking risotto would be keeping the rices texture al dente and moist, which I felt the chef did well here. In fact, it was comparable to the risotto I had in Milan a couple of years ago.

beef-sausage-mushroom-pizza

You will also find a number of pizzas here, mostly traditional based on Neapolitan recipes. This means the pizzas base is thin and crisp made with ingredients like anchovies, mozarella cheese, capers, olives and tomato. We had the Bascaiola Pizza @ RM24 and the main toppings are beef sausages, juicy mushrooms and mozarella cheese. We felt it was pretty good and you certainly cannot compare it with those fast food ones like Dominos or Pizza Hut. They are totally different.

pana-cotta

For desserts there are the classic Italian varieties like Tiramisu, Gelato and Panna Cotta. We tried both the Gelato @ RM5/each scoop (pistachio & chocolate hazelnut flavor) and Vanilla Panna Cotta @ RM11. Both are equally delectable but we liked the Gelato more.
FYI the Gelato here is not homemade but rather bought from a supplier that also supplies to another Italian restau! rant in Pavillion. The lady boss did not tell us exactly which restaurant it is in Pavillion, but one thing for sure is that they are selling it a whole lot cheaper over here.

restaurant-interior

Maroon seems to be the owners favorite color, you can see it used on the wall and the menu as well.

verona-trattoria

Parking wouldnt be a problem here. There were plenty of them on a Saturday night and better still, FOC!
