Pan Mee @ Kafe Jojo Little Kitchen, Bandar Mahkota Cheras, Kajang

Since moving to KL, one of my favorite lunch dishes is pan mee (Hokkien style flat flour noodle). The thought of the poached egg coating each strand of noodles accompanied by the spicy chilli paste/flakes is very appealing to me. We are lucky to have quite a few good pan mee outlets around Cheras.

The first time we made a visit to Jojo Little Kitchen, it was shut as it was the day before CNY. I should have known better. Determined to get a taste of the pan mee here, we revisited after CNY. The restaurant is not very big, hence on weekends you might find that you have to queue for a table during lunch hours. On weekdays however, getting a table here is a breeze.

There is quite a huge variety of pan mee on offer here, but we ordered what we usually have at other pan mee shops, the Dry Lat Jiu Pan Mee (lat jiu meaning chilli) (RM6.30). It met our expectations of a good bowl of pan mee. The noodles were springy, one had a choice of thin or thick noodles. The noodles was topped with flavoursome minced pork, crunchy ikan bilis (anchovies), poached egg, a sourish green chilli paste and their sig! nature s picy chilli flakes.

Mix it well and enjoy!

If you like your pan mee with an extra kick, you can add more of their signature chilli flakes which is provided at every table. There are also two other types of chilli, the sourish green chilli paste and sambal.

On another occasion when I was feeling under the weather, I decided to try their Traditional Soup Pan Mee (RM6.00). A hot soup based noodle is my idea of comfort food. Although their menu dictates that only thin and thick noodle types for this dish, one can also ask for the noodles to be "pinched" ie the traditional way of the dough torn into small pieces. Surprisingly, the broth here did not induce thirst and was flavoursome. I drank it til the last drop. Other inclusions with the noodle are black fungus (mok yee), sweet leaf, minced pork and fried shallots. The ikan bilis is served on the side to retain its crunchiness. If only Malaysia's weather was not so unbearably hot, I would order this more often.

Another must order for us here is the fried wantan (RM5 for 8 pcs). Wonderfully crunchy, it makes a great accompaniment to the noodles.

For drinks, I tried the tau fu fah (Chinese dessert made with very soft beancurd) (RM2.50) and requested brown sugar syrup with it. It was good, not too sweet and definitely smooth. The ice calamansi plum drink (RM3.00) here is also recommended, as the ratio of sourness and sweetness is balanced and hence makes a very appetizing drink.

PIZZA HUT HALF THE PRICE SAME GREAT QUALITY

IMG_1302
Pizza Hut is the place for friends and families to get together

When I was little, my parents used to bring my sisters and me to Pizza Hut on special occasions. Those were the days where eating out is considered as luxury by my family and the best that we can do is Pizza Hut. It is a place where we enjoyed our mushroom soup, bread sticks and pizzas. It is also a place where we perfected the art of filling our salad bowl to where the brim starts to flare out. Whenever I see the red roof logo, it brings back fond childhood memories.

As I grew up, I still go to Pizza Hut from time to time but I couldnt afford to indulge on my favourite Super Supreme Pizza, Spaghetti Meatball Bolognese and Hawaiian Chicken Pizza on a daily basis especially during a dry spell period.

Located at a quieter part of Bangsar, Opus Bistro is a homey, long-standing Italian restaurant that attracts a loyal group of regulars with its classic offerings. The restaurant has been there, in the same place, since forever ago. We celebrated our 2nd anniversary here, and now we are going into our 7th year. Time flies and it is also a true testament to Opus Bistros great food and attentive services.

Italian Fried Mozarella. With the golden fried breadcrumb coating around the oozing melted mozzarella center, how could anyone resist something that looks so downright sinful?

Seafood Antipasti Platter baked scallops and prawns, fresh clams in white wine sauce and mussels in arabiatta sauce Tempt your taste buds with these exotic flavours from the sea. I simple adore the fresh clams in white wine sauce, the sauce was so divine that I mopped up every last drop with the complementary bread!
IMG_1129
Spaghetti alla Opus is the dish that made us famous, according to Opus Bistro. Brimmed with seafood favourites like prawns, squids, clams and mussels that impart a mild briny flavour of the sea to the sauce, it was an instant hit among us. The flavour was further accentuate with the finishing touch of fresh herbs.

Spinach Ravioli with Gorgonzola Cream Sauce Paired with a creamy and mildly piquant gorgonzola sauce, this classic Italian home-made pasta dish makes a delicious vegetarian meal.

Grilled Lamb Shank I had to give this a pass for having too much mutton with gamey taste in China last week. However, according to KY, it was all good!

Opus Famous Roasted Cod with choice of White Wine Sauce or Lemon Caper Sauce. It is an all time favourite dish o! f Opus B istros regular. Impeccably fresh and juicy, cod fish was a flaky perfection! The sauce was refreshing, accentuating the natural flavour of the lightly seared cod.

Samplings on the Fourteen, Berjaya Times Square Hotel: Venezuelan Gastronomic Festival 2011

Venezuelan Gastronomic Festival_1.jpg

In this day and age, a family unit isn't necessarily made up of the people you were born to live with. Families are, after all, the people who supports and encourages you, pushes your buttons, kick your lazy fat ass, beat you down and pick you back right up; be your pillar of strength, a shoulder to cry on; they are there to protect you, feed you, nurture you, educate you *gasp for air* sing and dance with you, laugh with, cry with, bitch about other family members with; shelter you, accept you and most of all, love you. That's quite a tall order and not all traditional family areable to fulfill such roles. Hence, as we grow older and more into our own person, we tend to build our own support system. In some societies, these support groups are known as friends. But, I like to simply call them my family.

My new family is as big, loud, and crazy as they come. And the funny conversations and silliness between us could rival those of TV's Modern Family any day. They come in all sorts of names, titles, colours, shape and characters; like The Hater, Ah Pa, The Queen-cum-BFF, Sister Banana, The Goddess, Fairy God Mother, and that long illustriouslist is still growing by the day. Case in point, when J&K (whom shall be henceforth known as the Nannies due to their recent outstanding contributions as my babysitters) recently got invited to an event organised by their neighbour upstairs, they asked me along... as their Mother, no less. It's a lil' confusing, I know.

What they didn't tell me that it was an official event hosted by the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Malaysia. So, there I was seated down in the posh settings of Samplings on the Fourteen listening to their nei! ghbour, who spoke in a Sofia Vergara lilt - caressing every word before releasing it, as she regaled us about the day she got to know the Nannies.

The story goes that late one night she and her husband were hosting a salsa party in their apartment, and they received a rude call from the security office asking them to tone the party down as some neighbours were complaining. Of course they neglected the warning and continued to dance away. It wouldn't be called a salsa party if everyone just sat quietly right? Half and hour later, they found the said displeased neighbour knocking at the door.

"Hi, we live downstairs and we would really appreciate it if you can play quietly. It's past 1am and we're trying to get some sleep."

"Oh, so you were the neighbour who was complaining. Tell you what, let us make it up to you. You can start with this glass of margarita!"

J&K stayed on, one drink after another and danced until the sun rises in the morning. They say the rest is history. And I'm definitely self-inviting myself to the next party! *sniggers*

Venezuelan Gastronomic Festival_2.jpg

The dinner event was nothing short of a fiesta either. Bright colours and live music were bursting everywhere lending a local Venezuelan feel to the atmosphere. It was held in conjunction with the Gastronomic Festival launch, a part of the 6th Annual Venezuelan Week 2011, jointly organised with the Embassy's co-partner, the Berjaya Group. KL-lites can now until 8th May, enjoy authentic Venezuelan cuisine specially prepared by Chef Carmen Rawstron, who recently launched her cookbook entitled My Venezuelan Cuisine at the Samplings Restaurant.

Our menu that evening was filled with the chef's creations of :
E ntrees - Sopa de planto verde adornada con almendras tostadas / Cream of Plantains with Almond Crisp, which somehow reminded us of a mild curry even though we've been told by the chef that they only spice used was pepper;

Mains - Pastel de chucho con salsita de coco con ensalada de pina y lechugas troceada de vinagreta blanca / Spotted Stingray & Plantain Pie with Coconut Sauce and Mixed Salad and Pineapple, a typical coastal dish originally made with shark's meat, this tropical flavoured fish dish was a clear favourite with everyone that evening;

Desserts - Torta de guanabana / Soursop Cake, a sweet and light dessert cake.

Venezuelan Gastronomic Festival_3.jpg

My new Latin American friend, who I am still in awe of her beautiful accent, also informed us that a special Venezuelan Mothers Day Luncheon will be held at the restaurant on the 8th of May to commemorate that special day.

When I was young, I've always dreamed of having a big, nice and awesome family. But now, I'm stuck here with this ridiculous bunch, pretending to be my Nannies' Mother. It still sounds strange saying it. Well, we may be from different worlds, but somehow we fit together. Love is what binds us, through fair and stormy weather. And for that I'm grateful and blessed to have my "family" by my side. I love them.

Thanks to everyone at the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and especially the neighbour upstairs for being such fun and wonderful host for the evening.

Hosokawa Japanese Restaurant @ Racecourse Road, Brisbane

Hosokawa is a small and cozy restaurant and as the name suggests serves Japanese cuisine. If you are looking for a wide range of items and a more modern approach to Japanese food, you are knocking at the wrong door of Hosokawa.

What you will expect though is a small menu of classic items like sashimi, sushi, teppanyaki, tempura, teriyaki and a few more items here and there. Items that represent the core of Japanese cuisine and no more. However does the concise menu means guaranteed quality and taste?

Picture 157

Situated in Ascot in the higher end of the Hamilton suburb, the area is relatively quiet without too much noise.

Picture 158

We kicked off with the huge Sashimi platter for AUD32. Generous fresh portions of salmon, tuna, hamachi, squid and scallops. While I was happy with the portion, with any platter I expect a larger variety and a surprise or two which we didn't find.

Picture 170

The Miso Eggplant is a recipe that I have never succeeded in replicating and we gladly come back to have this instead. However that night, this eggplant took a good 40 minutes before it arrived on our table, not something to order if you are in a hurry.
< a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lotsofcravings/5636907708/" title="Picture 162 by lotofcraving, on Flickr">Picture 162

There was perhaps one problem with the grilled sea perch; Saikoyoyaki, the size and the price. What looked like a portion that was no more than a 100gm was AUD18. While I think the response was the fish was good, it was overshadowed by the pricey price tag.

Picture 168

Thankfully, the Unagi came in the standard portion and it was grilled well with the compulsory sweet glaze.

Picture 166

My friend who thought the fish would suffice had to call for an additional order for chicken karaage. What we noticed was the use of chicken breast vs. chicken thigh. However it was finished in a flash so I guess the meat wasn't dried out.

Hosokawa is a place you want to go for some classic Japanese dishes, a haven to visit to remind you of home if you are Japanese. However if you are on the look out for modern Japanese cuisine and want your palate to be tempted with unfamiliar flavours, Hosokawa won't be for you.

Address and contact details:

Verdict: 4 stars out of 5 stars. Visit the place with expectations for classic dishes and Hosokawa will deliver. Good quality food with slightly above average prices.
