Notes to Self: Part Three

notestoself3

so continues the series on Joy the Baker. I make notes to myself. How to live. How not to live and how its ok if I burn the cookies.

SWITCH IT UP! Were more than half way through the year and one thing is certain Im most excellent at sticking myself is a happy-go-lucky-comfortable-RUT! Seriously, Joy your routine has become 100% routine, and I mean that in the most uncharming way possible Even your cat is bored with your morning tea, afternoon doldrums, and evening Real Housewives.

Halfway through the year. Dang more than halfway through the year.

This isnt about big goals or lofty resolutions its more about the day to day. Switch things up. Get out in the world and try your best to see it differently. YeaYeaYea see things differently. Be more present. Downward dog, yadda yadda yadda. But how do you actually make this happen?

Step One (of several): wake yo ass up early and get going!

notestoself3

Step Two: Do notnotnot checking your email from bed. Its a trap.

Step Three: Get out. Treat yourself to a fancy coffee from a cute barista in suspenders. Write.

Step Four: Write anything. Write about your dreams. Write about how you cant go to the laundromat too early on Thursday mornings because that creep dude with one eye is always there giving you the eye (no pun, real life) and you cant seem to get through a load without dropping a pair of your incidentals on the laundromat floor. Write about how you have nothing to write about but the creep dude from the laundromat. Its an exercise! . No jud gements here.

Switch it up. Lets go!

Notes to Self:

Part Two: Youre Allowed

Part One: Be Bold

notestoself3
Switch it up with a new coffee shop.
Good coffee = important.
Good looking baristas = surprisingly important.

notestoself3

Drink more water (instead of more gin).

Yea whatever.

notestoself3

Switch it up with a new book. I happen to be currently waaaaay tooo intoGone Girl.

Mystery. Murder? Suspicion. Oooh man its good.

notestoself3

Switch up the doodle. Add clay.

notestoself3

One of my favorite (totally girly and possible totally annoying) things to do is switch up a few of my make-up pieces. I say all of this like I actually wear a lot of make-up which I dont (mostly because I dont know how to apply it without looking like a clown). Bobbi Brown Pretty Pink Blushis my new cheek treat. Mucho major.

notestoself3

Switch it up with a pretty house treat. Im smitten with theseRifle Paper Coasters. If youre a part ofJoy the Baker + Lost Crates, you know aaaalll about these lovelies. xoxxo.

notestoself3

Switch it up in the kitchen! This week I busted out a new cookbook and tried a recipe with fresh figs. For some reason Ive never baked with fresh figs. Good switch. Ill show you the recipe later this week! I hope you swoon!

The old switcheroo! Its self-trickery Ill take it!

Parmesan Celery Salad

I worked on two things over the weekend: organizing my photos into scrapbooks, and making this Parmesan Celery Salad. For years, I've had piles of photos accumulating in drawers, on desks, and in boxes. I suspect it is going to be a long process wrangling them into some sort of order, but at least I now have a plan. The salad? It's crisp and vibrant from the celery and jolt of lemon, creamy from the warm cannelloni beans dusted with wispy threads of grated Parmesan. It hits the warm beans and melts instantly. Prepping the ingredients involves a bit of slicing and toasting, but beyond that, it all comes together in no time.

Celery Salad Recipe

First, a peek at the albums.I came across these bound, cloth-wrapped photo albums at a local art supply store, and it was the motivation I needed to start this project. I suspect a number of you will ask, so here's the scoop. The albums are Kolo. I like the Hudson 3, which holds 300 photos in a narrow but chunky book format. And, the color you see in the photo down below is ivory. They're nice, but not over-the-top precious, if you know what I mean.

I started by organizing my favorite instant/peel-apart film shots into two of the albums. More than anything, I'm relieved they now live somewhere with a bit of protection. A lot of them were in a stack in my desk drawer floating around alongside recipe clippings, receipts, and long-forgotten to-do lists. Now, the real! project is going to be tackling my film archives. I must have fifteen years of slide film I've never properly scanned or printed. Exciting and paralyzing at the same time!.....

Celery Salad Recipe

Here's the celery salad recipe. It couldn't be quicker. And, more than anything, it's a breezy summer-spirited lunch option. The last thing I'll say, and I'll note it down below, this is the sort of thing that is particularly great when you cook your own beans - either from dried, or from fresh shell beans you might come across at the market this time of year.

skirt steak with charred pepper sauce

This is Alexs birthday week, which, in case youre new here, means that theres an open package of bacon in the fridge, the promise of oysters, shrimp cocktail, small-batch bourbon and babysitters on the horizon, butter and chocolate will soon align to meet their many-candled cake destiny and I, well, I bought some steak. I bet youd imagine that a guy married to gal who likes to cook things that make people happy would be frequently entitled to his favorite food on earth, made at home, just because its a Tuesday. Well, once every year or so, that is exactly what happens.

broiled red pepper
so you don't lose any pepper juices

This is also that point in the summer where pretty much every human being I know is either at their own beach house or a guest in someone elses right now. If youre in the former category, well, la-de-dah, okay? If youre in the latter category, I know a secret: You are totally going to get invited back next year because I have just the hostess gift for you to bring. Youre welcome.

Marini's On 57 Restaurant @ Petronas Tower 3

The pieces of the puzzle are coming together: the restaurant at Marini's On 57 is now open, beside the constantly bustling bar and close to the soon-to-launch lounge.
Entries on Marini's bar: June 26 and July 2.

The setting is stunning, instantly one of KL's most impressive-looking dining destinations, thanks to the can't-be-bettered 57th-floor view of the nearby towers.

Sit back and take a long breath before plunging into the menu; prices here are nearly as steep as the restaurant is high. A three-course meal will easily exceed RM120 after taxes.

Marini's soft-launch menu comprises several creatively composed concoctions like this creamy timbale of prawn, mushed up with avocado and mixed! with ch ampagne dressing.

Familiar classics include 'vitello tonnato,' chilled veal slices poached with tuna sauce and capers.

Cheerful chef Claudio, who hails from Rome, believes in the kind of honest, prepared-with-passion pastas that are the pride of his homeland, like spaghettini with mullet roe (botargo) and almonds. Terrific textures for this one.

Manfredine pasta with squid ink, calamari, tomatoes and basil leaves.

Tuna fillet, roasted precisely medium-rare for a buttery bite, with balsamic glaze.

Wrapping up this seafood-dominated dinner: pan-fried sea bass ! with a t wist, stuffed with shrimp for a surplus of succulence and served with rucola in lemon dressing for extra zing.

Chiu Chow Style Cold Crab @ Ming Lou Restaurant,

It was my last night in Toronto and we decided to have some Chinese Food before my midnight flight to KL. Living around Yonge and Finch there's of decent Cantonese Restaurants around and so we headed towards Leslie and Finch and decided to give the newly opened Ming Lou Restaurant.

Chiu Chow Cold Dungenus Crab
Chiu Chow Cold Crab
The Meat was definitely not as good as the flower crab usually served in Asia. The Dungeness Crab although bigger had less meat and Roe.

Boil Crabmeat and Tofu Soup

Peking Duck
Peking Duck First Course
The Skin was not very crispy and had too much fat.

Peking Duck: Second Course
Peking Duck Second Course
This wasn't very good. The duck was still Pink which is not something you would see in a proper Peking Duck. The Duck used was meant for a normal Roast Duck and not Peking Duck.

Oyster Omelet
Oyster Omelet
This was mediocre. I was hoping for big pieces of Oyster Meat but what we got was a big Omelet with miniscule amounts of minced Oyster Meat that was rather flavorless.

Braised Eggplant with Minced Meat
Braised Eggplant with Minced Meatr
Although it was a little oily I quite enjoyed the soft texture of the eggplant and minced meat. It was very good with rice.

The food overall was mediocre at Ming Lou. The pictures on the menu definitely looked better than it tasted.

Customising my own IKEA wardrobe for less than RM1,000!

Ever since moving to my new place I had needed a wardrobe. But it cant be a normal 2 door cupboard as I have an insanely mountainous amount of clothes!
Unfortunately even with such an abundance of outfits, Im still plagued daily with the same dilemma as any other female; where we stood in the middle of our room and threw our hands up in exasperation muttering Urghh! Ive got nothing to wear today! ;)

Because I was saving up for an oven, I ignored the heaps of clothes strewn everywhere; in the living room,in the laundry basket and of course, in the room. After a while, I grew intensely infuriated as I ended up wearing the same thing over and over again or I just couldnt find the exact item I know I own but missing whenever an occasion calls for it.
Finally I decided to hop into IKEA to check the prices for a wardrobe. I had also wanted to research on the some of the items I saw during my trip to Ikea Paris and The Netherlands to make a comparison if IKEA in Europe is cheaper than Malaysia and also if their range of furniture are any different.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-045

I should have posted on my foreign IKEA visits earlier but was stopped due to remarks of irrelevant content by the IKEA here. Anyhow, who wants to keep reading about Ikea at IKANO Power Centre? Im sure my article on Ikea Paris and The Netherlands are going to be as interesting if not more. Thus that will be posted soon. :)

The wardrobe section of IKEA at IKANO Power Centre was never an interest. I walked past it, glanced at a few items, longed for one of the 3 sliding doors set but never gave it a serious thought.

BELOW: These walk-in wardrobes are going to be a reality one day! :d

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-043

I personally thought this one is space-smart but ugly. At any rate, I wouldnt pay RM2,206 for it!

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-039

With white being my favourite colour, I was leaning towards something like this. But for RM2,021, it doesnt even come with sliding doors. :(

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-041

Heres another one, white and slightly cheaper.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-038

A large sliding door wardrobe was going for somewhere between RM2K RM3K. I looked around for more options and was shortlisting my selection when an IKEA staff gave me the idea of customising my own.

What? I didnt know I could do that!
And it sounded like a perfect solution to my woes, for I know exactly! how I w ant my wardrobe to be like and through customising, the budget would be within my control as well.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-042

It all started when I finally decided on getting one that has sliding doors and was priced below RM1,500.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-030

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-031

I thought it was a bargain; though I didnt like the shelves as most of my clothes are not folded but hung to avoid creases.
So I asked one of the IKEA staff if theres any way I can remove the shelves so I can make space for more rails to hang my hangers. Perhaps something like the below, I illustrated, where one side has 2 rails and thus giving me more space to hang my dresses.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-033

In true IKEA fashion, the helpful staff told me to customise my wardrobe from scratch instead. She told to follow the steps outlined in the customise your wardrobe section; where Step 1 requires you to select your wardrobe frame, followed by Step 2where you select your doors.Step 3is when you start to add the shelves, rails and knick-knackers to make your wardrobe space suited to your needs.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-049

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-051

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-059

Step 1 and 2 was easy though sadly there were no sliding door option. For Step 3, the helpful lady advised me on the railings I need, the amount of hinges and the measurements as well as the price.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-048

Everything were calculated in the system and items were added or deleted according to my budget.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-052

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-055

Once Im satisfied, a printout detailing my requirements is printed out and Ill have to sign my consent.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-056

< p>BELOW: The section where all the door handles for the wardrobe are.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-058

The only thing I had to bring along with me to pay at the cashier was the door handles (RM25 each x 2). I have requested for the rest of the items to be sent to my house.

Thus after checking out, I headed over to the Home Delivery section with my printed order and filled in the necessary details such as the convenient time and date delivery date.
Here an additional RM65 was charged for the delivery service.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-066

On the morning of the appointed date, I got a call confirming the time and an assurance from the delivery team that my item is shipped. Pretty reliable, I told myself as I put the phone down. :)

IKEA

The delivery arrived on the dot as promised and the helpful dispatch boys unloaded and bought the items into the house. They placed them at the exact location I requested.

IKEA-001

I was rather excited and asked my friends to help me assemble it. The wardrobe is rather tall and heavy so some brawn was needed. :)

IKEA-004

IKEA-005

Instructions from the booklet was straightforward enough and so we got the frame assembled pretty quickly. However, getting it up to stand was a task oversimplified. In the process, one of the sides gave way and the wardrobe was spoiled!

I was upset, and called for more brawn but this time withbrains.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-070

The 2nd reinforcement team fixed the problem by using another set of connecting points. Well, I wasnt going to buy a new one so luckily that worked.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-075

The rails and hinges for the doors were the last to be fixed.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-076

The rails were RM20 each and I fixed 3. No shelves or compartments required.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-069

The almost final product!
We were all really anxious while trying to get it to stand. Thankfully, nothing untoward happened and with 3 persons, we pushed it up; all the while holding on to all of its corners just in case the connecting points gave way again.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-072

Finally, a happy girl with her wardrobe!

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-073

Now that it could stand, we continued with the doors.

IKEA Wardrobe 2012-077

So what do you think? :dd
