Kedai Makanan Laut Lai Fatt @ Cameron Highlands.

A one day escape from the sweltering heat in the city-we drove up to Cameron Highlands via Pulai-visited some vegetables and flowers farms-then stopped for lunch at Kedai Makanan Laut Lai Fatt located beside a Guan Di temple in Kampomg Raja, Cameron Highlands, Pahang.

A nice place to rest our weary legs and filled up our tummies before more sightseeing action..........etc

Parking is OK.

Pumpkin Spare ribs-looks appealing, sweet and meaty.
Steamed river Patin-not properly defrost rendering some portions to be uncooked-otherwise fleshy with no mud aftertaste. Stir fried 3 types of mushroom-oyster, golden needle and button mushroom-earthy flavor.Their signature Tofu-deep fried until golden brown-crispy on the outside-smooth and silky on the inside-topped with chopped dried shrimps/chai poh/spring onion and lard on a bed of sweet soy sauce.

......ended the day's trip with a visit to a grape farm in Bertam Valley, Ringlet.

Sweet Corn Hash and other Dad-friendly Foods

IMG_4415

Heres the plan: breakfast!

Heres the second plan: dice up potatoes, toss it with stuff, and call it hash.

Heres the other part of the first and second plan: serve it to someone you love. Maybe thats your dad. Maybe thats your handsome husband. Maybe its that dude who takes your trash bins in just because hes nice.

Heres another important part of the plan: parsley and butter they should go in pretty much everything (except probably cupcakes).

dad and me

This is Dad and me. I know because my mom put a sticker on this one of my favorite photos. My Dad is the best man I know. I also love those jeans I wish he still had those so I could borrow them.

But seriously best man I know. Thanks for being that guy, Dad.

Im obsessed with these assorted new potatoes. I like when food is pretty.

IMG_4409

Corn is out of control right now. It tastes like candy.

Parsley still tastes like parsley though not candy be cool.

IMG_4411

Corn nibblers.

Listen itll go all over the kitchen floor as you slice it off the cob. It just will. Hopefully your cat eats corn.

Mine does. Weird.

IMG_4419

This breakfast side is super simple and versatile.

New potatoes are roasted in the oven with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Onions are grilled in cast iron.

Fresh corn gets cut from the cob and a handful of parsley is chopped.

Potatoes and onions get engaged, married, and move into the cast iron skillet together. Potatoes makes onions get rid of her couch that he hates.

Corn and parsley come over. They bring their friend butter and everyone lives happily ever after, in the belly.

Serve with scrambled eggs.

Sweet Corn Hash

serves 2

Print this Recipe!

1/2 to 1 pound potatoes, cut into chunks (as many as you and your guest would like to eat)

olive oil, salt, and pepper

1 small or 1/2 of a large onion, diced

2 fresh ears of sweet corn

1/4 cup chopped parsley

2 tablespoons butter

salt and pepper to taste

Place a rack in the center of the oven and preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place potatoes on baking sheet, and toss with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until tender and cooked through.

While the potatoes are cooking, saute onions in a cast iron skillet, over medium heat until tender and browned. Turn off heat and set aside until potatoes are done baking.

Slice corn off the cob and chop parsley.

When potatoes are done baking, remove from the oven and place in the cast iron skillet with the onions. Cook over low heat. Add corn and remaining 1 tablespoon of butter, salt, and pepper. Toss until butter is melted and corn is just warm.

Remove from heat. Toss in parsley and serve.

This hash lasts, in an airtight container in the refrigerator, for up to 4 days. Its delicious.

View Rooftop Bar

The View: Round Two. Earlier entry: June 10.
Returning for playfully inventive cocktails. This time, Gula Melaka-infused booze: Caipiroska (absolut blue, lime wedges, gula melaka) & Champagne Tropicale (mango, Luxardo maraschino liquor, Mumm's champagne, gula melaka).
Hopped downstairs to Tanzini to fill our tummies, since The View's kitchen wasn't operating during our most recent visit (plus, only finger food was on the bar menu),
We prayed for pasta perfection, but the food fell short of stellar. Nothing fundamentally wrong with this angel hair pasta with lobster medallions & bisque (though it lacked the black truffles promised on the menu), but there was little oomph in the flavor. Kinda like the service, which is efficient but not warm.
Handmade squid ink pasta with Pernod-flamed crab meat. Tanzini isn't stingy with its seafood, which comes in bountiful portions (commensurate with the hefty prices).
Chili tagliatelle with tiger prawn & ikura. Tasted all right, though again, a truffle component was missing _ this was meant to be scented with white truffle oil, but we couldn't detect any.
Orvietto Classico Doc 2008 (Italy).
Earlier entries on Tanzini: August 10 & August 13.
To wrap up, more parting shots of the View's various features and sights.

AMUZ (French Fine Dining)

Amuz is a French fine-dining restaurant opened in October 2010 by chef Gilles Marx, who previously worked in Riva. The venue sets you in a Parisian dcor, circa 1900, with exposed metallic beams, large windows and classy furniture. The clients on that day were mostly rich Indonesian/Chinese women but it might have been just a coincidence...

The menu is classic and should change depending on the availability of seasonal products. A la carte, the price for an appetizer is around Rp200k, and for a main course Rp350k (up to Rp650k). I took the lunch meal, more basic: Rp250k++ for a 3-course set lunch. This is an excellent deal.

I started with the AMUZ gourmet salad, which includes Mesclun Lettuce, Marinated Tomato Olive, Artichoke, Quail Eggs, Shaved Foie Gras Terrine and Hazelnut/Balsamic Dressing. It is not an exceptional dish, but it should be enjoyed for the quality of the ingredients used. In particular, the balsamic vinegar tasted authentic, which is usually rare even in good restaurants.
As a main course, I had the Tender ! Braised Baby Lamb Shank, with Basil Mash and Kalimata Olive. Again, the dish was simple, with only the basil mash being a bit unusual, but both the cooking and the ingredients made the difference.
To finish I had a delicious, fruity Crme Brule:
Overall: Recommended. I only experienced the most simple dishes from AMUZ, which were all excellent. Since I'm already quite familiar with French cuisine (I am French), I would have liked to be more surprised with the flavours but this is more a matter of personal taste. I am also a fan of AMUZ's interior design, one of the most elegant you will find in Jakarta. At last, concerning the service, it is friendly but I noticed some problems with the organization (i.e. nobody to greet me upon entering or when leaving). It is no big deal but unusual for such establishments.
Opening Hours:
Open from Monday to Saturday from 11.30am to 2.30pm for lunch and 6pm to 11pm for dinner. No lunch on Saturday. Closed on Sunday and Public Holidays.

It is usually quite crowded for dinner, especially by the end of the week, so make a reservation first.

Antipasti buffet for RM18++ @ Spasso Milano, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur

Yes, you read right.. RM18++ only for the antipasti buffet at Spasso Milano. When I first read about this, I couldn't believe my eyes too because it just sounded too good to be true. Having visited the restaurant this week and trying out the antipasti buffet for myself, I can just say it is one hell of a great deal.

Spasso Milano is located on the second floor of Nihonkan club, sharing the building with Pappa Rich. There is ample (free) parking spaces out at the front, which is a plus point for me.

One of the best things about this restaurant is the service. The servers were very friendly and pleasant throughout our lunch, and seem very knowledgable about the dishes and menu in general. And very kids friendly too!

The antipasti buffet is laid out near the front of the restaurant. The selection is not very extensive (approx. 15 types), however almost everything we tried that afternoon was tasty. Throughout lunch, the plates were refilled on a regular basis.

My favorite antipasti has to be the Clams with Aromatic Tomato Dressing; the clams were succulent and absolutely delicious. I filled my plate with some of these everytime I did a round at the buffet table. Other than the clams, I enjoyed the Eggs Stuffed with Smoked Salmon Cream, Vegetable Frittata, Baby Octopus in a hearty spicy tomato sauce and Grilled Zuchinni.

Clams with Aromatic Tomato Dressing - my favorite

Baked Pumpkin - Baby D's favorite

Garden Salad

Potato Croquettes

Roasted Beef with Rocket and Balsamic Dressing

Eggs Stuffed with Smoked Salmon Cream - yum!

Grilled Zucchini - simple but delicious

Fried chicken / vegetable sticks

Vegetable Frittata - pretty good

Roasted peppers

Pizza Aromatica and Garlic Foccacia - would be better if it was still warm

Here are just some of the food we tried off the buffet.

Other than the antipasti, you can also sample the soups on offer. There were 2 types available; beans soup and tomato and basil soup. Personally I prefer the beans soup as the texture was smooth and was more creamy and rich.

And for another RM3++, you can add-on a main course. Pick from 3 selections which change weekly. Hubby went for the Chicken Piccata with Lemon and Capers Sauce, and I went for the Pan Fried Dory Fillet in a hearty tomato sauce Sicilian style. Both dishes were well prepared and were served with some pasta ribbons and vegetable ratatouille. We particularly liked the ratatouille which was tangy and appetizing.

The choices for dessert was pretty limited. You can either have fresh fruits or cakes from the buffet. I found the cakes to be most disappointing as most of the cakes had a very dry texture and did not have any distinctive taste to them, though there were three types available that afternoon. Thankfully, there was also panna cotta and this was simply delicious! Served in shot glasses, I must have helped myself to 5 of them. Definitely a must try!

Lemon cake, carrot cake and orange cake - all look pretty samey

Sinful panna cotta :) Must try!

Open Kitchen

Restaurant interior - sleek and contemporary

Do not miss this great deal! Available everyday (weekends included!).

Verdict: Good quality buffet at a reasonable pr! ice and top notch service. What more can you ask for.
