Sourced Grocer @ Teneriffe, Brisbane

I always thought I had a huge folder of photos, still untouched and yet to feature on the blog until I realise I am up to date.

That got me thinking, had we not been eating out and instead been cooking more at home?

Turns out if my memory serves me right that we have been frequenting familiar spots, spots that we are comfortable with. It also dawns upon me that I should be feasting on all the good stuff I have unearthed in Brisbane before we start our new adventure next year.

Luckily I still have a place that I have yet to blog about.

One place that keeps sticking out in Twitter, Facebook or the newspapers is Sourced Grocer.

What can I say about this place? Its hippy, cool and relaxed. Somewhat resembles the cafes in Melbourne.

As the name suggests, it is a grocer where you get a range of meats, bread, vegetables, fruits and etc that looks like its been hand picked and sourced. On the shelves, you get a whole load of other goodies like the Yarra Strawberry Jam that I had with my toast this morning.

On top of that, they have a section for breakfast items with coffee.

IMG_1754

Order at the counter and take a slip. You pay at the counter where they use Macbooks as a POS, isn't that cool?

IMG_1749

The place was packed when we w! ent on a Sunday morning. You had people taking away, sitting on the stairs and outside the shop. Coffees took a while to arrive but were as good as gold.

Originally when we saw a lack of space, we wanted to take away coffees and be gone. Lucky me again, we scored two seats and I couldn't wait to dig into some breakfast.

IMG_1756

The Croque Monsieur, eventhough in reality is ham and cheese was awesome with the addition of some rocket leaves.

Be warned though, it does take awhile for meals to be served.

All in all, a hippy breakfast place and you can even pick up some groceries too!

A word of warning for those who don't embrace the heat like me, it is not an enclosed air conditioned place so it can get a bit hot although it be perfect for autumn / winter.

Verdict: 4 stars out of 5 stars. Love the concept!

sweet potato (and marshmallow) biscuits

sweet potato biscuits

I admitted somewhere in the comments last week that Id all but abandoned making my own pumpkin puree these days, baking instead with the always-reliable canned stuff. I think that as home cooks, its our tendency to want to do anything and everything that can be from scratch as such, but that Id never been satisfied with the labor versus outcome balance of roasting pumpkin. To get a dreamy texture like one from canned pumpkin, I found I often had to roast, then puree, then sometimes cook briefly on the stove to thicken it up and often, still found the flavor inconsistent, sometimes delicious, often a little lackluster. I know, I just put you all to sleep. I promise, there is unapologetic goofiness ahead.

mixing wet and dry

What I didnt get into was my current obsession putting sweet potato where youd expect pumpkin. With the arrival of this guy, roasted sweet potatoes are in a near-constant rotation and so it was only a matter of time before they showed up everywhere. Whether I buy sweet potatoes from a Stop & Shop by my parents house or the bottom of a dusty crate at a farmers market on 2nd Avenue, is a remarkabl! y consis tent creature of the underground. I roast them for 45 minutes (which makes my apartment smell like bubbling sweet potato caramel, i.e. heaven), let them cool, then peel and run them through a potato ricer and have perfectly textured and flavored purees every single time. This year Ive been on a huge sweet potato baking kick: pies, pancakes, breads and now this, biscuits.

Dry Aged Porter House Steak @ G Buzzano, Frankfurt

I'm back in Frankfurt again for a couple of days to attend the IAA Convention. Traveling alone, my friend Balazs decided to visit me in Frankfurt for a night where I took him around Frankfurt for a quick tour around the City Center.

G Buzzano

I was craving for some good Scwheinebraten but settled for a meal at an Italian Steak House called G Buzzano because Balazs was sick of Pork after living in Munich for several years.

Although G Buzzano is an Italian Steak House the steaks they serve are USDA Prime Steaks which was quite a relief for me because I've never heard of Prime Beef coming out of Italy or Germany.

Olives and Bread
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Olives
Bread
The serving of Olives and Warm Bread was a very traditional way of starting our meal at a Steak House. This definitely kept our hopes high as we wait in anticipation for our Steak!

House Salad
House Salad
Th is was such a simple but excellent Salad of Fresh Field Greens and Balsamic Vinaigrette! The Greens were light and crisp and the dressing had a nice balance of sweet and acidity

Truffled Mash Potatoes
Truffled Mash Potatoes
The Truffle Mash had a really nice buttery flavor that was complemented by the earthy flavor of the White Truffles. The consistency however was not very fluffy.

Dry Aged Porter House Steak for two
Dry Aged Porter House Steak for two
Our Porter House Steak was very tender that almost melts in your mouth. The flavor however was disappointing for two reasons. First their so-called "Jus" was actually clarified butter which they poured all over our steaks making it too oily. Second the Steak was very under-salted.

Apple Tart
Apple Tart
I enjoyed the crumbly tart shell and also the filling of the Apple which wasn't overly too sweet.

Strawberry Tart
Strawberry Tart
Bali's favorite. The Strawberries had a nice balance between sweet and sour and was very soft in texture.

Overall I enjoyed the Sal! ad the m ost at G Buzzano but was terribly disappointed with the expensive Porter House we ordered. Nothing is worse than having a chef destroy what would have been a perfect piece of Steak by under seasoning it...

Pork & Kim Chi Stir-Fry

DSC_9030_509x768
Were you caught in the flood last Saturday? I was. I drove out to pick my son from tuition at 6:00 pm and was surrounded by water on the Jabatan Air road. Although I was driving an SUV, the stretch of flooded road in front was long so I drove into the Jabatan Air compound, with a small car following behind me. One by one, another 5 cars came into the compound too. We all sat in our cars waiting for the wind and rain to calm down. By 7:15 pm, I was totally bored and going insane sitting in my car so I drove through the water and onto the short stretch of road to get back to the main road. After picking Wey up, we got back to the Lido area and it was totally jammed. Jalan Penampang from Lido up towards KK was flooded. Lido Market was flooded. Houses were flooded and the access road to my house was flooded too.

Anyway, that was one of the worst floods in the last 20 years or so.
.
I had let Vero off early because we were going to my MIL's house for dinner but since the roads were flooded and restaurants nearby were all closed, I had to cook dinner quick because it was about 8:30 pm. I found a bottle of kim chimade by my friend Flora and some belly pork in the fridge and just made a quick stir fry of them. Surprisingly, Wey loved the pork and kim chi stir-fry even though he dislikes spicy dishes. He asked for the same thing the next day and then the day after.

This is my fourth plate of belly pork and kim chi stir fry. Wey said it isn't my best because 1) the pork was fried too long, making it hard and dry 2) there's sugar in the dish. Guilty as charged, I have to admit. I had rendered most of the oil out because I was concerned for the fat boy ("But the point is I like the fat!" he said) and I had added sugar because the store! -bought kim chi was extremely sour. Wey is my Gordon Ramsey, telling me exactly what he thinks of my food and the thing is, he's right nearly everytime.

I'm sure there are many ways to stir-fry pork and kim chi but this recipe is the fastest (takes 15 minutes only to prepare and cook) and you needjusttwo basic ingredients. Sometimes the simplest dishes are the best, especially in emergencies.

DSC_8997_1024x678
The amount of belly pork to kim chi is up to you. The pork must be quite fatty.

DSC_8998_1024x678
You can add some oil to the pan but I prefer not to.

DSC_9003_1024x678
This is overdone. Fry the pork until just done.

DSC_9010_1024x678
Add the kim chi and fry at medium low heat so that the kim chi flavor gets onto the pork.

DSC_9012_1024x678
Add the scallions and drizzle some sesame oil over.

Pork & Kim Chi Stir-Fry
1 cup thinly-sliced skinless pork belly
3/4 to 1 cup kim chi, cut same size as the pork
1/4 cup scallions, cut into short lengths
sesame oil

1. Arrange the pork single-layer on a non-stick pan and turn on the heat to medium high. Turn over when half done and fry both sides until lightly golden and just cooked. Do not overcook or the belly pork will be tough and dry.

2. Pour as much oil from the pan as possible, keeping the pork in the pan. Return the pan to the stove, add the kim chi and stir to mix the pork and kim chi over medium-low heat for about 2 minutes.

3. Add the scallions and drizzle some sesame oil over. Plate up and serve with hot plain rice.

1000 Great Wines That Wont Cost a Fortune

1000 Great Wines That Wont Cost a Fortune From the Worlds Best Wineries

Such a world encompassing work has called on some of the top writers; specialist in their fields. So you have Wink Lorch contributing notes on the Savoie and Jura, Peter Liam compiled the champagne notes, Jamie Goode wrote stuff on Portugal and Sarah Jane Evans put forward the Spanish chapter. I contributed a few bits on Alsace and Austria; which was nice.
While 1000 Great Wines sits easily as a standalone it was designed as a companion follow up to the larger, mammoth even, Wine Opus.

Everything you need to know about how to enjoy wine without hurting your pocket can be found in 1000 Great Wines That Wont Cost a Fortune. Go on a wine-tasting journey across the globe with an extensive team of wine writers, all experts in their own regions. Theyll introduce you to 1000 great-value wines from the worlds best wineries but focussing on the more affordable end of their wine lists.

Expand your knowledge with features on the most popular grape varieties and tips on how to get the most out of your bottle from food and wine matches and correct serving temperatures to the right glassware to use. Practical advice will also help you host your own wine-tasting event and navigate restaurant wine lists with confidence.

1000 Great Wines That Wont Cost a Fortune is perfect for any budding wine enthusiast who enjoys wine but cares about getting great value for money.

Rather than just a list of wines there are plenty of side notes covering such topics as how to navigate a restaurant wine list, Sauvignon Blanc and the differences found in the wines from different regions, how the use of oak influences the flavour in a wine and the differences between Pinot Grigio and Pinot! Gris. F ood and Wine suggestions litter the book too. Contact details, websites and visitor facilities are also listed where appropriate.

The wines selected were supposed to be available for under 15. I have to admit that a few of mine came in above this (I had to squeeze some of my favourites in!) and I expect the likes of champagne also broached this limit.

Aimed I think at the beginner to intermediate wine lover there is plenty of interest and makes a fine companion to the more in-depth Wine Opus (which is also recommended).

1000 Great Wines That Wont Cost a Fortune is available from Amazon.co.uk for 13.59. The Wine Opus is currently 29.16.
