Expect to see more tropical fruit flavours from Brazil like papaya and mango, as the country seeks to expand its presence in the food industry. AFP pic
BEIJING, May 12 The tropical, wild flavours of South America are being given the spotlight at the largest international food and beverage exhibit in China this week, where Brazil has been named the guest country of honour a move that signals the growing interest in products native to this burgeoning country.

SIAL China, which is expected to draw more than 40,000 visitors and 1,740 exhibitors to Shanghai this week, has given the seat of honour to a fellow economic powerhouse and one of the fastest growing marketplaces in the world.

With the tagline One Country, Many Flavours, Brazil will be courting buyers from around the world to import foods and offerings like Brazilian meat products, coffee, chocolate, honey, tropical fruits, cachaa spirits and wines.

Brazilian cuisine is influenced by its Portuguese, African and Amazonian heritage. Foods that are either native to the country or considered traditional include root vegetables like cassava, yams, pine nuts and fruits like aai, mangoes, papaya, guava, oranges, passion fruit, pineapple and cupuaa, an oblong, brown and fuzzy fruit encased in a hard shell with a fragrance reminiscent of chocolate and pineapple.

Feijoada, meanwhile, is considered the countrys national dish, a rich stew made with black beans, salted pork or beef, bacon, sausage often served with rice, collard greens or deep-fried cassava.

Meanwhile, the top 10 international pavilions at the expo by number of exhibitors is led by France and the US:

Happy Mother's Day 2012

Happy Mother's Day to all Mums!!

When I saw the Canele "I LOVE MUM" macaron last week in Singapore I had to get one on the kids behalf and present it to their mother, Baby Sumo. Baby C and Baby D love their mother and their mother loves Macarons them too :-)

What better way to reward your mother on Mother's Day than to utter the words "I LOVE MUM"

The stars were definitely aligned last week as we had only minutes earlier encountered a L'EAU DE CHLOE pop up promotional display where they were giving away white roses and framed portraits.

I'm going to let you into a little secret here - Baby C goes by the name Chloe. How fitting it would be for us as her proud parents to be captured in a professional portrait below her name. I decided this would be Chloe's individual Mother's Day gift to her Mum.

I'm going to let you into another little secret here - Baby D goes by the name Daniel(the smart ones out there would already ha! ve guess ed this from my name ChloeandDanielsDaddy).

So what can our young son Daniel present mummy with this year for Mother's Day? On another trip to Singapore this yearwe dined at db Bistro Moderne by Chef Daniel Boulud.

The waiting staff were more than happy to meet with my demands and presented me with a clean napkin as a memento of our dining experience on my departure. In keeping with this year's "gift from Singapore with my name on it" theme I decided to frame the souvenir and present it as Daniel's individual Mother's Day gift to his Mum.

From "Daniel" with love To Mummy xx

Several other macarons passed over Baby Sumo's lips last weekend as did some delicious and exciting food - stay tuned for future blogposts from the parents weekend break in Singapore.

warm, crisp and a little melty salad croutons

warm, crisp and a little melty goat cheese salad crouton

Several years ago, my job required that I occasionally fly here and there for conferences and, oh, they were not fun. I know that many conferences today are wonderful events where wonderful people meet and expand their professional horizons but those for me were all about windowless conference rooms, buzzing flourescent lights, and all hopes that I would be able to get out! and see a new city! dashed when I realized I would, in fact, need to file articles from my hotel room that night. On the lowest of these trips, I found myself gazing a painfully unappetizing room service menu and came across an item called a fried cheese collage and this, I am sad to say, was the last straw.

two goat cheeses

What is WRONG with this world? I grumpily, nay, hangrily told my husband over the phone. Fried cheese? Why does cheese need to be breaded and fried? Isnt cheese lovely without breading? Without frying?

grated and smashed

Won Korean & Puran B @ 1 Utama

Forging ahead with the exploration of Isetan 1U's Eat Paradise food hall, with visits this week to Won Korean Dining and The BIG Group's Puran B.
Earlier entry on Eat Paradise's Menya Musashi and Gantetsu Ramen: May 9, 2012.

The best thing about Won: it's unabashedly hog-wild, so customers can revel in steaming-hot, stone-pot bibimbap mixed with stir-fried pork and veggies. Prices are moderate, with this coming in at below RM25.

The worst thing about Won: well, teething troubles _ the outnumbered service team seemed overwhelmed at peak hours. Some folks left in frustration when their orders were not taken or their food failed to surface.

Soju, to soothe our spirits throughout the twenty-minute wait for the bibimbap.

The BIG news, however, is that The BIG Group is venturing outside KL's city limits. At Isetan 1U, there's now Puran B, the Japanese spin-off from Plan B; next up, another Plan B will open at Kelana Jaya's Paradigm Mall ...

...but more intriguingly, Ipoh might also host one more Plan B. Nobody wants to confirm this, but there are whispers of an upcoming branch at a derelict warehouse beside Ng Sek San's Sekeping Kong Heng, which could also feature a cooking school for disadvantaged youths.

Puran B is only serving desserts and non-alcoholic beverages this week, but a full menu should emerge soon, comprising Plan B's standards, plus several Japanese-influenced recipes, potentially prevalent in the salad and pasta dressings.

Australian iced coffee at Puran B. Maybe we'll come back later this month.

Still feeling peckish, we walked downstairs to Petite Millie.
Earlier entries on Petite Millie: Feb. 6 and Feb. 10.

Can't go wrong with the six-hour-braised beef cheek poutine, subtly tinged with truffle oil.

Also worth trying: Philadelphia cheese cakes supplied by Crossroads. This creamy creation is a Malaysian masterwork, baked with santan, topped with gula melaka and coconut shavings on a coconut cracker base.

Chocolate orb, filled with caramelized Packham pear and raisins, poured over with warm raspberry coulis. Sensuous cocoa decadence, bolstered by fruity sweetness.

Pink and the new Red: Juicy Dreams (strawberry, melon and lychee juice) and CYT Ca! b Sauv.< br>

Rose Water Pistachio Fruit Salad

IMG_6920

It couldnt have been easy to be my mother. I was shy, stubborn, and resistant to change. Id observe a national day of tantrums every time she cut my hair. I was obsessed with Julia Child, Lucille Ball, and McDonalds every McDonalds we drove by. Obsessed. And I was (capslock) pissed when my little sister was born. Just livid.

photo

Its still not easy to be my mother. Im still shy, stubborn, and resistant to change. My mom knows not to approach my head with a pair of scissors in her hands. Im still really into Julia Child. I enjoy Lucille Ball and if one were to hand me McDonalds fries Id sure as heck eat them. These things are all still realities, its just that my Mom doesnt have to live with it all up in her house everyday.

I love this photograph of me and my mom. In this picture shes the age that I am now which isnt stressful to me at all. (Realtalk: its just a teeny tiiiny bit stressful.)

IMG_6883

My mama is wonderful. And booooyy does she love making a fruit salad. Thats totally a mom thing, right?

This mom inspired fruit salad is the real deal. No overripe bananas. No mushy pear. No unripe melon. No apple!

Berries, ripe watermelon, and grapes because we should. This is top shelf mom business!

IMG_6903

Because this salad is on a train for MomTown (really, Joy!? ugh), we should add some bonus bits: salty pistachios, edible flower petals, and rose water!

Pistachios add a salty crunch and a color thats completely out of this world. I love the way that rose water absorbs into the strawberries and watermelon its beautifully fragrant. Like dreams! Edible flowers, like marigold and pansy petals add just a bit of lady appeal.

fancy fruit salad

Mom salad with a small side of rosewater whipped cream. Just dont tell her I put it on the floor to take a picture of it.

Im going to put a printable link on the recipe, but you really dont need it! Keep it loose! This salad is all improvisation. Mamas LOVE improvisation, except when it comes to moving out of the house, going to college, or eloping.

The Fanciest Fruit Salad
