Single tuna fetches record RM2.3m at Japan auction

TOKYO, Jan 6 A deep-pocketed restaurateur shelled out nearly US$750,000 (RM2.3 million) for a tuna at Japans Tsukiji fish market yesterday, smashing the record price for a single bluefin.

The 269kg fish caught off the coast of Japans northern Aomori prefecture stood at an eye-popping 56.49 million yen (RM2.27 million) when the hammer came down in the first auction of the year.

The figure dwarfs the previous high of 32.49 million yen paid at last years inaugural auction at Tsukiji, a huge working market that features on many Tokyo tourist itineraries.

Yesterdays winning bidder was Kiyoshi Kimura, president of the company that runs the popular Sushi-Zanmai chain.

At around 210,000 yen per kilogramme, a single slice of sushi could cost as much as 5,000 yen, but the firm plans to sell it at a more regular price of up to 418 yen, local media reported.

The flesh is coloured in magnificent red and the quality of fat is very good, Kimura said. It is very delicious. The taste is unbeatable.

A Hong Kong sushi restaurant owner bought the previous years record tuna, and Kimura added: I wanted to win the best tuna so that Japanese customers, not overseas, can enjoy it.

Bluefin is usually the most expensive fish available at Tsukiji.

Emiko Misumi, a 44-year-old woman who tasted a slice, said: This tuna is so fatty and very delicious.

It was sweet even without sugar or sake. It was a very delicate sweet taste, said another female customer Noriko Nakai, 63.

Decades of overfishing have seen global tuna stocks crash, leading some Western nations to call for a ban on catching endangered Atlantic bluefin tuna.

Japan consumes three-quarters of the global catch of bluefin, a highly prized sushi ingredient known in Japan as kuro maguro (black tuna) and dubbed by sushi connois! seurs th e black diamond because of its scarcity.

You know, good things like this are appreciated in the whole world, said 22-year-old male customer Hirotaka Higurashi when asked about the overfishing issue. There is nothing we can do about it. AFP-Relaxnews

Going to Tanjong Berembang, Nibong Tebal for Prawn Curry

We were on another trail to north of Peninsula Malaysia with the intention of visiting relatives and a bit of makan adventure.
3 cars 14 people with an early crisis. One of the cars battery went kaput and a slight delay.
Here we were, the GPS device took us here through Nibong Tebal town, a Malay kampong and eventually a dead end next to a connecting bridge.
It was a short walk under the scorching sun with many motorcyclists using the bridge.
Just at the other end of the bridge you will see Lim Aik Chews famous Kari Udang shop.I met two KL friends Lawrence Sze & Simon, not bad out of 7 tables in the shop 2 were friends (feeling at home, hehehe....).The time was 2.10pm when we were waiting for our food.Deep fried Golden tail pomfret with preserved bean sauce topping was delicious. The fresh water prawns specially ordered in advance in their famous curry version, it was spicy and a wonderful experience at Lim Aik Chew. If you miss the supply of fresh water prawns then you will get sea water prawns instead. My advice call first for fresh water prawns.Steamed roti - a lovely soft bread and the prawn curry was a good match. The prawns' heads are big a! nd this batch of prawns have sinful roe that you cannot resist.....LOL.Steamed fish with perserved beans was yummy and fresh.Stir fried lettuce.
Bye bye Lim Aik Chew, now that we know you and the way to reach you we will come again.

Putien Malaysia

Another Singapore-bred enterprise is reborn in Malaysia; after roaring through locations across the Lion City _ including Kitchener Road, Vivo City, Marina Square & Resorts World Sentosa _ Putien has finally landed in our country, targeting the heart of 1 Utama.

Putien's culinary roots lie in time-honored Heng Hwa cooking from the coastal town of Putian in China's Fujian province. Its voluminous photo album of a menu is replete with rustic recipes, focusing on seafood, pork & noodles.

Drunken cockles marinated with wine (RM9.90+), with resonant notes of garlic & chili singing through the saltwater essence of these marine mollusks.

Pork intestines (RM12.90+), painstakingly cut, folded & braised. These taste like some kind of spongy stuffed sausage, reassuringly free from the stench that plagues intestines.

Seaweed with mini shrimp (RM8.90+). Slimy & slightly briny, it makes for a minimalist starter; "cucina povera" _ the cuisine of poverty _ adapted for contemporary consumers.

Century eggs, lightly fried in buttery crumbs (RM8.90+). A decadently creamy preparation that breathes new life into preserved eggs; no wonder Putien was once ranked among Singapore's Top 50 restaurants by the Straits Times.

Iced abalone (RM19.90+ per piece), pleasurably plump. Putien's prices won't break the bank; two can easily eat & be merry for under RM100.

Bamboo prawns (RM8.90+), sunk in a soup seething with Chinese wolfberries & Angelica root, both herbs believed to possess anti-inflammatory properties.

Peanut-topped Heng Hwa Bee Hoon, on the house _ perhaps it was an opening day promotion (we're not sure, since communication with the Cantonese-speaking staff was problematic, even though they were otherwise expertly efficient). Thinner & che! wier tha n normal noodles, with a deep savoriness derived from Putien's signature stock of pork bones & aged hens.

Battered sea bass in rice red wine (RM18.90+). And all this was less than a quarter of the menu; there's no doubt that Putien will pull us back soon.

Grilled Miso Cod
Grilled Cod Fish
My favorite dish of the night. The Cod had a nice textur! al contr ast from the crispy exterior and really soft meat. The marinade was a little on the sweet side and the Cod was very rich from being grilled in Butter. It was also served with some sauted mushrooms.

Overall I felt the food at Toshi was above average . However for value I feel it is way over-priced for the type of food we had.

Christmas Pot luck

Well, bigger house and bigger kitchen means friends-entertaining in style!

Totally forgotten how to blog. Pics are taken from fb from my friends cause I was kinda too occupied to even hold a camera and take some photos. Well even the yummy pork roulade is not in picture. Man, stuffings are too good Im going to remake it just so I can have a picture. serious.

So here we go.

Menu

Appetizers / starters: Kumquat brie tarts, deep fried platter, cherry tomato snacks and nachos (but came too late were too full so we skipped it)

Salad : roasted pumpkin spinach salad, potato salad

Main : Pizza, roast pork roulade with stuffings, extra serving of stuffing, cranberry sauce,

Dessert : freaking lots of fruits, mini fruit n cheese tartlet, tiramisu lava cake, lemon meringue tart which everyone was too full to eat.

Drinks: some bottle of wines and fruit punch

In the purple casserole, are the extra stuffings which couldnt fit into the roulade so I just put them in a pot and bake separately. Oh SO GOOD! I mean I hardly ever say the food I cook is so good, this is one of the few :P

And the pumpkin salad which I made too, but this one, Ive made once prior to the actual pot luck. I bought a smaller but organically grown pumpkin. Theyre so sweet and yummy. I have a proper picture of this one, which I will put up the recipe later. Well I had about 10 friends and my family ar! e eating as well, so there were 2 bowls of salad!

Pizza. Well I kinda did a pizza station where my friends could just put whatever ingredients they want on top but because they were kinda too full to even get creative on pizza shapes lol. My friends are mostly small eaters!

Thats the kitchen island and tall cabinets n stuffs. Well its kinda full with food now. Hehe

Fruits that we didnt finish lol! Too much. Some of them came after dinner so I guess apart from them being small eaters, they didnt eat too! No wonder leftovers!

Lemon meringue tart that didnt even make its way. Lol. Consider this a last minute dessert as I was just itching to make Pierre Hermes Lemon cream (if you hvent made it, you have to! Its ridiculously delicious!) These became my nieces desserts a few days later hehe

candies and chocolates!

Cake! Of course there would be cake. I wasnt quite sure on which cake to make until the very last minute. I checked with my friend what kinda cake she wanted (well its her birthday 2 days later from the party) and she said chocolate lava. #okayguy.jpg Chocolate lava is an emergency dessert and it doesnt fit my requirements as a party cake. So I remembered seeing on Ellies Almost bourdain site before about this lava tiramisu with a hole in the center. I borrowed the idea of it and made it using a tiramisu recipe I use all the time, with a few minor adjustments. Well, friend got the lava cake. Just that apart from chocolate, theres also coffee and rum and baileys in it. (couldnt find my kahlua i nthe store. Not sure which box its in :( hence the baileys. )

Right of course the chocolate ganache will melt in and create a yummy sinful mess.

This was what I meant with the flowing chocolate ganache. Well, will do another post on this another day. :)

I guesss thats all the photos. I mean, of course you dont wanna see us playing taboo and exchanging presents Lol. Dinner parties are fun. Im hoping to do more of it this year :)
