Review: Lunch @ Sevenseeds, Berkeley St, Carlton

Thanks to my parents, I would not know that Seven Seeds was just 8 minutes away from my apartment, via public transport. To be honest, I am at loss when it comes to deciding on where to bring my parents to go have lunch. First, my dad is not huge on fine dining. He just brings me to these places because I enjoy haute cuisine. Taking him into consideration, I decided to bring him to Seven Seeds. According to many bloggers, Seven Seeds serve amazing sandwiches, mind-blowing coffee and yummy desserts.

And my visit to Seven Seeds just reaffirmed the positive reviews about Seven Seeds.

Inconspicuous entrance

Factory-like cafe

Fresh flowers to break the brownness of the place

Toasted brioche, field mushrooms, free range egg, pesto

Pumpkin and ricotta sandwich, organic whole grain bread, rocket leaves

Chickpea and brown rice salad

Wholesome chocolate bun

Chocolate brownie that tastes more like a mud/fudge cake

Cappuccino no. 1

Cappuccino no. 2

Flat White (Macchiato)We ordered a couple of things. I had a Mediterranean inspired chickpea and brown rice salad. The brown rice had an interesting texture of half-cooked barley. The salad had the right amount of acidity and sweetness. It was also very healthy because it was not salty or oily at all.

The pumpkin and ricotta sandwich that my dad had was worth the praise. The toasted multigrain bread that was used was very fragrant. It reminded me of the Irrewarra's Breakfast Seed Loaf that I always had for breakfast. The pumpkin and ricotta were pleasant fillings. Again, it was not salty at all.

My sister's toasted brioche with mushrooms was another of our favorite. Most cafes put too much of salt on their flat field mushrooms but not Seven Seeds. The mushrooms were just sauteed. No salt was added. The pesto was not too oily either. The only complain was that the brioche was a little on the dark side, although some may beg to differ.

I felt that the mains were very democratic in the sense that one gets to decide how much salt and pepper to add into the dish. This is what I really love about Seven Seeds.

Apart from that, desserts were superb. The chocolate bun and chocolate brownie had generous amounts of dark chocolate! Most cafes serve horrible, overly sweet brownies! Coffee was great. Looking at the coffee is good enough to satisfy me. When it comes to coffee art, Seven Seeds totally ace it. Not only that, they know their coffee. ;) I cannot really describe how the coffee tastes like because it will do them no justice. You will have to try it out yourself.

Overall, Seven Seeds is my favorite cafe and breakfast place. More so than Hardware Societe and Cumulus INC. Plus, it is very near my uni. :D

Tenjin

Tenjin: Round Two. Earlier entry: June 6.

Raw tuna with "hot-spring egg." Love it, love it, totally love it.

Half-broiled salmon with anchovy sauce. Nicely executed, with slices of fish that remain raw at the bottom but lightly cooked on top, complemented by a gently savory sauce.

Foie gras chawanmushi. Can't-fail custard, supplying sublime spoonfuls of livery lusciousness. Never settle for plain chawanmushi if possible!

Tuna roll, alongside uni & ikura sushi. No complaints.

Soba with duck breast & mountain veggies. A hearty, heartwarming recipe that might represent the pinnacle of Japanese soul food.

Cold green tea for me, hot for you.

Five Things for Monday

photo

I made you some truly despicable muffins this morning. They were full of peanut butter, and oats, and the best of intentions.

They were gross.

So here we are stuck staring each other in the face. Its bound to get awkward.

All I have for you is a picture of my desk.

Um. I love you. I doodle it sometimes.

Can I tell you about real life?

photo

Im one of those girls that wears a ring on her ring finger. I do that. Im not married. I bought my own dang ring and wear it on my ring finger. And I love it. And its not coming off until well, you know. Maybe it confuses dudes:

Wait is she married? She has a ring wait. Is that the right hand or left? Wait. That doesnt look like a wedding ring. Huh I wonder if shed give me her number so I can send her a text late at night, in like 2 weeks, and ask her whats shes doing. Cause Yea.

The ring confuses dudes. Im ok with that.

photo

I have a letter from my friend Tyler on my desk.

Hi Tyler.

Tyler is currently in Afghanistan being a soldier. I think about him and all the people over there doing brave things while I sit at my disk and complain about bad muffins. I think about them every day mostly because I dont want them to get shot, or shoot people, or get hurt, or hurt anyone but well thats tough.

!

I app reciate them so much.

photo

Ive got this manuscript on my desk.

THE manuscript. For my book. Its almost done.

In the meantime its kinda giving me nightmares. Like oh-my-god-this-is-a-dream-come-true nightmares.

Does that make sense?

photo

I also have this encyclopedia-type food styling book on my desk.

Its extensive and sufficiently overwhelming.

Wait is my desk stressing me out? Maybe just a little, tiny bit.

Im going to go make some vegan cookies, eat too many, and them tell you all about them. Real life.

Our Father's day celebration

Just a quick one before i buried my head back into work.

How did you celebrate your father's day?
It is not often we get to do something special for our dad, so every year, we scratches our heads thinking hard on what to do for the only special guy in my life (ok, that sounds so wrong)

As daddy always go out for entertainment most days of the week, we thought it'll be good to have him relax at the confinement of his own home, but we arent really keen on doing much cooking, so my sister came up with the fussy-free idea of HOTPOT.

Here are some photos to share:- (again apologies for the bad quality photos, you'll have to get used to it until i figure out the settings hahaha)

Yum yum, we had a choice of szechuan soup base, and clear soup base. No prize for guessing right which one i opted for

Then there was the customary dipping sauces

The absolute necessities: beef slices, and lamb slices

Vast amount of food that can feed the whole kampung, according to my mom
Oh well, better over prepared then under prepared right? =)

Our Alcohol bites: Yung Kee HK's Century egg is the bestest!!

Desserts is no other than chocolates from PATCHI, *licks*

Last but not least- drinks!! We're a bit more adventurous on this special day

Did couple of shots of china's Bai Jiu, and Sake

Then proceed to my favourite PATRON's Coffee Tequila

Ended with some Glenmorangie Single Malt Whiskey

Last but not least, my gift to daddy dear.

LOVE YOU MUCHIE DAD!!

Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen @ Pavilion, KL

I was ranting to Chris about killing the boredom of having our katsudon norms (yes.. chicken and beef) at a Japanese restaurant when our partner-in-crime AiWei rang the bell of dining at Tonkatsu instead.

What's Tonkatsu ?
Lat's read along.
It's a breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet, sliced into bite-sized pieces. Usually eaten with cabbage slices and miso soup. Yes. It's pork!
We could have guessed many of you would be aware of the whereabouts of Tonkatsu.

We were greeted by friendly staffs upon entering and was pretty comfortable with their modern interior & neat surroundings. Their menu was simple & Tonkatsu is the main star. Choose between pork fillet cutlet or loin cutlet, or even both and you'll be satiated, walking home satisfied.

DSC_2946

Well, you will be served with a mini mortar & pestle like cutlery. Grind your own sesame seeds to release the aroma & don not forget to add the sweet sauce (Worcestershire or special Tonkatsu sauce) to taste. It's a very appetizing sauce to dip with your pork/chicken cutlet.

Their pork cutlet are coated with panko or breadcrumbs before being deep fried. Crispy outer layer with juicy meat underneath. They are even garnished with yellow karashi; Japanese hot mustard for the extra oomph.
*Each set is served with sliced cabbage, tofu, pickled vegetables, pork vegetable miso soup & rice. The miso soup is very flavoursome as it was filled with ingredients.
*Remember to drench some plum sauce onto your cabbage slices for better taste.
