blackberry and coconut macaroon tart

sliced

For the last few weeks, Ive been going nuts as it feels like every single person I know that has a food blog, has read a food blog, is a fan of food blogs or eats food itself has been gushing over Heidi Swanson of 101 Cookbooks new book, Super Natural Everyday. But not me! Because although I pre-ordered mine in early March, it didnt arrive for what felt like an eternity. Every morning, me and my tiny partner in crime would take the elevator (always his favorite part of the day) down to the basement, where unclaimed packages often linger by the Supers apartment and came back empty handed. Then we would sigh, get to work load up Twitter on my laptop and read that another two friends were gushing over a book I was being cruelly deprived of and shake our tiny fists at the Amazon Gods and cry, Why must you make us wait?!

Neither of us are very good at waiting, you see. Nevertheless, one fine day last week a box finally arrived and after careful toddler investigation of the package (Can I stand on it? Can I lift it? What will it taste like if I lick it? Can I jump off t! he 2-inc h box and applaud myself when I land on my feet?) I was given permission to open it, take another magical elevator ride to the basement to drop off the box with the recycling and then finally his dad returned home and I was granted an entire bath and bedtime ritual to curl up with Heidis newest book.

Coffee Square @ Sunnybank, Brisbane

Read my posts about eating Chinese food in Brisbane often enough and inevitably the same key words will pop up; "Sunnybank" being the suburb where Chinatown is and "Market Square" a big plaza of restaurants that serve Asian fare.

One of those weekday evenings where we didn't have an ounce of creativity and energy, we found ourselves in Market Square. With almost 30-40 restaurants in the vicinity, we stuck to my friend's usual spot; Coffee Square.

Packed to the brim, Coffee Square is your typical Hong Kong cafe (char chan teng) which serves a plethora of dishes that range from asian to western. Although there is a big menu, one must still choose wisely to find the better tasting dishes. Prices are reasonable.

If you are lazy to choose around, you can start off with their daily dinner sets, a choice of asian or western with a drink too. If you have to order a drink, their Ice Milk Tea is a must order.

We decided to be adventerous and ordered the fried pork intestines. Unfortunately, there was still a big offal aftertaste which meant their cleaning of the intestines was probably not thorough enough.

Servings are huge as evident from the size of this cheese baked chicken rice. My friend who is the same size as me could afford to take away half of it and still be stuffed.

For a jack of all trade place, their roast duck was pretty good. Succulent meat and crispy skin are prerequisites for a good roast duck.

The main that comes with the set dinner is blatantly much smaller than your ala carte dish, not in terms of the plate size but the ingredients used. While the braised beef brisket was good, there was no more than a few pieces.

A place for a quick meal with plenty of choices for those who like a bit of everything.

Verdict: 3 stars out of 5 stars. Don't expect too much and you won't get disappointed when you d! ig in. A nother decent option to choose from a range of shops in Market Square

Fu Qing Sanur (Mangga Dua)

I visited Fuqing Sanur, a Chinese seafood restaurant, a day I was lost in Mangga Dua. Since this area is not very crowded with expats or tourists, I was hoping the food would taste good and would not be too expensive.

The restaurant does not look very pretty inside, but it is clean and spacious. I came in the middle of the afternoon so there were no customers and I had the attention of at least three nice waitresses. By the time I had finished eating, a few people had came in. I would guess it is a popular place to eat in the area, with most clients being regulars. The name, Fu Qing Sanur is a mystery since there isn't anything reminding you of that Balinese village Maybe it is a way to tell people they specialize in seafood.

The menu is very long, with mainly Chinese dishes, not surprising for Mangga Dua. It includes shark fins, frogs, abalone and pork, but no prices are mentioned so you need to ask the waitresses.

I ordered the steam fish (Red Snapper), for Rp25,000 an ounce (total Rp125,000 - a price below average). Compared to the other restaurants in Jakarta I've tried, it took longer than usual for my food to arrive, around 30 minutes. As I was the first client, maybe the kitchen was not completely ready. The dish looked fine, without being too original, and I was a bit disappointed with its taste: The fish seemed fresh, but the soup was lacking in flavor.

Overall, I did not think the restaurant was a particular gem. It is a random venue, serving the kind of food you expect, at the price youve paid for. If you live in the area, I recommend you to try it, though not for special occasions (dates in particular) because its design is very dull.

Kin No Mizu

Mizu's third branch bears a different name from its original outlets at Bangsar Village and TTDI. But its menu remains mostly satisfying and the service team is just as welcoming.

Starter of shredded turnips. Similar to the contents of Nyonya 'pai tee.'

Yellowtail carpaccio with cili padi & wasabi soy sauce. A Malaysianized recipe, zapped with chillies for a zesty wallop. Some might say the spiciness prevents diners from fully relishing the fresh flavor of the fish, but others will love it.

Mizu Special Maki, stuffed with cheese & topped with salmon, avocado mousse & gold leaves. Opulently presented, packed with tasty ingredients that blend harmoniously together.

Sauteed jumbo prawns & scallops in truffle sauce. Plump, juicy seafood, but with scarcely a! ny scent of truffles, strangely.

Beef tendons simmered in Japanese curry. Gooey goodness, prepared piping-hot in creamy, mild-tasting broth. Comfort food for a rain-soaked evening.

Salt-grilled yellowtail head We began this entry with hamachi, so it's fitting to finish with it. Lots of sweet, meaty flesh and gorgeously gelatinous eyes on this one.

Robert Mondavi, Woodbridge Chardonnay (California).

Hana Awaka Sparkling Sake (7 percent alcohol).

Earlier entry on Mizu @ TTDI Plaza: March 31, 2009.

Smoke Meat Galore @ Chenoys, Montreal

I'm back in good old Montreal for a day and had to make a stop at another Montreal Smoked Meat joint called Deli Chenoys before heading back to Toronto. This place was recommended by a friend of mine for their creative use of Smoked Meat. They've got it on Sandwiches, Rice, Pastas and even Pizzas! And to top it off diners have the option of having their Smoked Meat cuts Lean, Medium or Fat.

Smoked Meat Platter
Smoked Meat Platter
I was conned into believing the Platter would be small until it came. There's probably Half a Pound of Medium Smoked Meat on the Platter. It was quite juicy and had a good flavor. However Schwartz in my opinion still has the better Smoked Meat.

Extra Fat Smoked Meat Sandwich
Extra Fat Smoked Meat Sandwich
My friend ordered this Caloric and Cholestrol Nuke. The medium Smoked Meat was already very juicy and tender but this literally melts in your mouth. I guess MORE FAT equates to MORE FLAVOR

Fried Dover Sole on Pilaf
Fillet of Dover Sole with Pilaf
Don't ask me why we ordered Fish i! n a Smok ed Meat Joint but we did. The crust was a little dense and the Fish was a little under-seasoned .

My meal at Chenoy's definitely satisfied my craving for Smoked Meat for probably a few months. The food may not be as good as Schwartz. But for the price they sure are pretty generous with their portions!
