Now that most of the series that I follow on TV have come to an end, or end of season, (eg, CSI NY, CSI Vegas, Brothers and Sisters, Game of Thrones, Camelot) I find myself finding solace once again in cookbooks, usually before going to bed. This beauty was given to me by Boolicious, as a birthday present a couple of years back, and I have so far only tried one recipe from there, one step croissants. A bit misleading, coz it's HARDLY one step. Anyway, that was a botched attempt... I think our hot and humid weather and my sauna of a kitchen are not conducive for croissant making.
One night, after a disturbing watch of Spartacus, Blood and Sand, and the uninhibited violence, which shows the slitting of the throat, and blood spurting out like a slaughtered chicken, from the bad guy's neck, (actually he wasn't a bad guy, just doing his job la, as a gladiator, much like our FRU fellas), I thought I'd dispel the gory images by flipping through some food porn. And I stumbled across what I thought was rather interesting, the BRETON APPLE PIE. The description intrigued me, it said the crust was almost cake like. But, the thing that caught my eye was the use of 4-5 egg yolks for the pastry. I always have a lot of egg yolks from Pavlovas, and apart from making custard or pastry cream, and fattening the already horizontally challenged FBB-lets, I tear my hair out wondering what to do with my yolks. Indonesian layer cakes require a lot of them, but it also requires a lot of time.
So this dough recipe, I thought, would be a good way to get rid of them yolks.
Pastry
200 gm butter
4 yolks
1 cup sugar (which I reduced to 3/4 cup)
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (not essence)
1 extra yolk for brushing.
For the filling! , get th e domestic help, or child labour, or a knitting grandmother, to peel and core 8 apples. The book says 1.5kg of Golden Delicious, but I mixed it with Granny Smiths, (the green type, not a knitting grandmother).
Stew the apples (cut into 8s) in 1/2 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon, (I upped it to 1 tablespoon...I like my cinnamon in apples), with a dollop of butter and squeeze of lemon juice.
Stew stew stew until the apples are tender. Like a woman's heart. Some women anyway.
Strain the cooked apples, letting all the liquid sieve out. Afterall, you dont want a soggy pie, which is as bad as soggy biscuits.
Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Can someone explain to me how creamed yellow butter turns pale? Does that mean if we cream a chink enough he becomes white? Oooh, now there's a thought. Add the yolks, one by one....the way the animals boarded the ark. Oh, hangon, that's two by two. Sorry.
Chuck in the flour, and scrape with a spatula, to bind together. Although the number of yolks seem to imply an inordinate amount of liquid, surprisingly, the dough was fairly pliable, and not watery. The instruction was to roll it out into a 10 inch diameter x 2" tall pan. ! However, instinct told me that there will not be enough pastry, so I used a 9" pan instead. You're supposed to roll the pastry into the pan, up the sides as well.
You cant really tell here, but the pastry does creep up the sides, about 1.5 inches. One reason why I havent done more bake and take picture posts is coz its helluva inconvenient to roll pastry in one hand and handle a camera in another hand. Let alone a dslr. These are taken using the Iphone 4, which is idiot proof...somewhat.
Chuck in the apples. You can see from here, with some frame of reference, that the pastry does come up the sides.
Oh, sorry, I forgot to say, roll out 2/3rds of the pastry, leaving 1/3rd for the top. As it is, even with a smaller pan, I was struggling to have enough pastry to cover everything. Roll out the balance pastry and cover the pie. Much like a normal pie, though Nick made it sound very complicated. Brush the top of the pie with the egg yolk. (actually in the book it says whole egg with some water for the egg wash, but I needed the whites for pavlova).
Bake for 50 mins in 180C (or 160C in my oven, with fan).... I was quite pleased with the results actually, a cake cum pie, like a Chindian or some other mix. The color (okay, Iphone 4 white balance is iffy) was a lovely golden brown.
Now, the only thing missing was a dollop of Haagen Daz vanilla ice cream.
Verdict - Yummy. Actually, contrary to popular belief, this version is probably easier than a normal apple pie, because you can botch up the pastry a bit, and it doesnt require the fiddly task of rolling out pastry, lifting it into a pie dish, etc. The texture of the pastry/cake is precisely as described. Not quite pie, not quite cake. It makes for easy storage and refrigeration. Oh, and do serve it with pure cream or vanilla ice cream. That was sorely missing.
Luna Negra (Italian restaurant)
Luna Negra is a trendy Italian restaurant located on the ground floor of Plaza Bapindo. The interior design is neat, with a retro-chic atmosphere that is sadly starting to become banal in Jakarta. One of my friends complained about their service and I agree there seems to be some training to do in the next few months. The waiters are nice, but they are not always available and attentive.
The menu features mostly home-made pasta and authentic Italian pizzas. The prices vary a lot, but on average, it is Rp100k for a pizza including tax, and slightly less for pasta. I ordered the "Prosciutto e Funghi" pizza (Rp86k with tax). It is more expensive than the average in Jakarta, but I considered it was worth it since it is one of the best I've had here. You can can getter prices in Trattoria and Pepenero, but I'm not sure the taste is better (read my review Italian restaurants in Jakarta).
I also tried a Crme Caramel for dessert, and again, I found it very decent compared to what you can get elsewhere in Jakarta.

Overall: On the contrary with many hip, overpriced venues in Jakarta, the food in Luna Negra actually tastes good, and I have many friends who share the same opinion. All I can hope is that the cook, an Italian, will stay long enough to train well his future replacement. Recommended, you may want to make a reservation if you go there during the weekend.

Hyu (International Business Club)
Hyu is a small bar and karaoke popular among the Japanese and Korean expats in Jakarta. You have one main room, modern with a large screen, or a few private ones. To make the atmosphere more cheerful, the guests usually book a few lady companions (LC) in the room. It does not necessarily imply anything sexual.

LIYEN (Authentic Chinese Cuisine)
Liyen is an authentic Chinese restaurant located in Kota. It is not very far from the Bank Mandiri Museum, maybe 3 minutes by foot. They specialize in Hakka cuisine (from Southeast China), with some recommended dishes like the Salted Chicked, the Grilled Duck, or the Fried Prawn with Salted Egg.
We went for half a grilled duck (Bebek Panggang Liyen, Rp100k), the grilled eel with vegetable (Lindung Cah Fumak, Rp55k) and the Fried Prawn with Salted Egg (Udang Goreng Telo Asin, Rp88k). As you can see, the prices are quite high for Kota (usually about 30% cheaper).
The service was very fast, and we had our plates full only 5 minutes after ordering.

The duck was probably the best I ever had, and when I think about how it tasted in Duck King, I realized how bad it was there. In Liyen, the meat is juicy and tender, with the skin perfectly crispy. A must-try dish.
We took more risks with the eel, but it was worth it. The fish is quite dry, but with the vegetables it becomes much smoother to eat. By the end though, it became more difficult to finish the plate because I was starting to realize eels are some very ugly creatures.
At last, I only tried a tiny portion of the Prawn, but since I'm usually not a fan of seafood I won't comment. But I know my friends said they liked it.
Overall: I had a great time in Liyen and I want to come back soon to try more dishes from their menu. From what I had, I can say it is one of the best authentic Chinese restaurants in Jakarta.
Concerning the atmosphere, it is pretty basic but it looks fine and they made an effort to put some Chinese decoration. The hygiene of the toilets could certainly be improved.

Taj Mahal (Indian Restaurant Jakarta)
Taj Mahal is the most authentic Indian restaurant I've been to in Jakarta so far. I found it while I was walking around in Pasar Baru, one of the two areas in Jakarta with strong Indian communities (the second one is Sunter). After visiting a Sikh temple, I asked the guards what was the best Indian restaurant around, and they drove me straight to Taj Mahal.
From outside, it is very easy to miss because it is not bigger than a warung. The inside looks old, with some Indian decoration, but nothing fancy. It was 3 in the afternoon when I entered, and apart from me, there was a Pakistani and an Indian. They were quite surprised to see a westerner so it was not long before we started to chat.
The menu is not so big, but you have all the most famous Indian dishes. The prices are very cheap, and you can probably eat well for less than Rp60k. I ordered a small Thali for Rp35k, and even though I had eaten just 2 hours before, I finished it instantly. Everything was perfect with this meal: The location, the service, the authenticity of the place, and of course the food.

Augustdiners Explore: Ultimate Guide to Taipei (Part 1)
SAY WHAT? 19 RESTAURANTS IN 3 DAYS??? SHOPPING FRENZY?? BORING OLD TEMPLES AND DULL BUILDINGS??
Thats exactly what weve achieved in our recent Taipei trip- and speaking of 19 restaurants, street eats were not inclusive yet! It was a fulfilling trip, and it helps that the eateries in Taipei is relatively cheap too! Now I can come home and cry to mommy because of those few extra pounds around my waist and blame no one.
Ive been meaning to share the ultimate Taipei guide with our readers-but by the rate Im going, always distracted with other things during mid-sentence, I seriously has doubt that this can be completed within a short span of time. But Im in a good mood today, and I am also a very determine woman today, finally setting out a 2-hrs uninterrupted solitude in order to concentrate writing this post.

But Im in a good mood today, and I am also a very determine woman today, finally setting out a 2-hrs uninterrupted solitude in order to concentrate writing this post.
So heres our two cents on all things Taipei (which will be split into different entries) I hope you enjoy reading them! And if you know better places to go, please let us know! There are several items in our itenary which we didnt manage to achieve due to the lack of time, but well share it with you anyways, because sharing is caring.
TRANSPORTATION- PRETTY CONVENIENT
Because there is no MTR line from the international airport that leads to the city center, your options will be 1) Taxi which should cost you around NT$1000- 1200 (equivalent to approx RM100-120). Exchange rate is currently approx RM1- NT$10. Alternatively, there are several 2) airport bus companies which will stop by at most major hotels or MRT station in the city. Walk to the nearest bus ticketing counter and tell them your destination to be advised the best bus services to take. Most would cost around NT$120- NT150. The international airport would be an estimate 45 minutes ride to the city center.
First thing when you settle yourself in TAIPEI is get a MRT route map. This will be your bible for the next few days. To start off with, you will need a MRT card which similar to HONGKONGs, can be used in taxis, and convenient stores as well. We started off with NT$500, which sets you up with NT$400 credit for your usage (NT$100 being deposit and refundable when card is returned). MTR here is cheaper than hongkong, single journey to most location would only cost around NT$12- NT$20 depends on the distance. But if you travel with 3-4 friends, you can also consider taxi travelling as their starting fee is only NT$70, with NT$20 premium for night time (if not mistaken).
There are several MRT routes that lead you to all parts of TAIPEI, but if youre up for just exploring within the Taipei center and immediate surroundings, youll find yourself using more of blue and red line.

PART 1- (BANNAN LINE)- leads to popular station
This form of LA MEIN is originated from YUNNAN, China. Noodles being madewithingredients such asonions and radish , and improvised withthick broth using tomato, minced meat, eggs and mushrooms, it has been a popular eatery in Taiwan, and you'll see many locals dining here during lunch time.
What's nice about this noodle is it has a nice springy texture/ or as taiwanese known as being very "Q" texture. Thethick brothis filled with earthy flavours.

Being one of the restaurant under the group, whom has diverse from themed taiwanese restaurant to japanese restaurant, each has its own specialty/ unique concept, this particular restaurant aims to introduce taiwanese cuisine to the younger generation. With their neo light display, and casual seating booth- it creates a sorta fun atmosphere. Their name of dishes also implies some playfulness with names such as "wolfmen's omelette eggs" or "teacher im sorry" or "you're my baby"
Be prepared to wait to be seated as the place tends to fill up easily, especially on a weekend, but luckily service was pretty efficient.
