Lion City!

No lions in Lion City but there are plenty of giagantic rain trees! That's the first thing that strikes me everytime I come to this city. Why is it that Sg can have such big lovely trees shading their highways and roads, making everywhere green and fresh, when we, next to Sg, have mazes of concrete flyovers and bare dusty road dividers?

Why is it that the Sg dollar, once at par with Malaysian Ringgit, is now 2.4 times higher, despite The Little Red Dot, city and country being same size (247 sq km, Wiki) as the city of KL (243 sq km, Wiki) and having no natural resources? Why is it that EVERY street and corner is clean and devoid of thrash yet in Malaysia you can't step into a coffee shop without used tissues sticking to your shoes and chairs? Why is it that buses are new and clean, run on time, plentiful and fares are cheap? Why are Sg taxi drivers rated the BEST in the world while KL taxi drivers are notorious for not using their meters and picky when sending passengers, discriminating about locations and even the weather?

Why is Sg rated the best place to live (albeit now rated the 6th costliest) in South East Asia (or the whole Asian region)? Why are the literacy rates, education and living standards of Sgreans among the highest in the world? Why is Sg Airlines making money but not MAS?

Why, you think, are things so different between Malaysia and Singapore when both countries have been run by the same political parties for nearly 50 years?

Favorites List (December 2011)

I like December more than most months. I like the tinsel, the twinkling lights, hot mugs of tea in the afternoons, and sparkling drinks later on. I like winter flowers, soft sweaters, shortbread (baked a few minutes too long, please), and a dash of Christmas Elvis. I start looking forward to the parade of citrus that isn't far off, and I daydream about places where snowflakes are native. The last few years I tend to get wintertime allergies, effectively balancing out a favorite month with one of my least favorite things :/ Anyhow, I thought I'd post this list on the early side this month, and then follow it up with a few favorite holiday recipes in the coming days. Hope you like:

One last thing! ! I nearly forgot to thank all of you who came out to visit (& have books signed) at the Remodelista Holiday Market. It was wonderful to meet so many of you in person and to have your support. -h

Lead photo: There are three tiny trees, side-by-side, on my block just exploding in wintertime flowers. I've been out everyday this week to take pictures of them.

Cake Pops: Two New Videos

IMG_1838

Hey guys. I have a new book trailer video for Cake Pops. Its up on Amazon if you want to watch.

Dont worry, the first one is still there, too if you want to see my how-to on dipping. Im glad they left that one up, because I think its helpful if youre just starting out making them.

The new video is a little different though, but still cute. Alex and Joelle from 4SP Films made all the magic happen. They have created several videos for Chronicle Books in the past. So, if you want to see a little behind-the-scenes or links to the videos themselves, read on.

IMG_1830

I made the cake pop props in a few of the designs from the book.

And carefully drove them all over like this to my friend, Cupcake Julies house for the video shoot. You know the one I did the Candyland Christmas post on. Well, she has a super cute cupcakey kitchen with a pink island, of course. Perfect for a cake pop video.

IMG_1827

I brought just a couple of sprinkles and such, too. : )

This i! s the st ressful part of working on a video away from my kitchen. I am so worried Ill forget or need something, or that a pop will break in transit, that I just bring everything and its distant cousin, just in case.

Untitled-1

It does make things easier if you are prepared and organized though. There is so much time involved in set ups and lighting, that I would hate to add to it by fiddling for stuff.

This was an overview beauty shot of bowls of colored candy coatings. It helps to have cool gadgets like this little monitor tethered to your camera so you dont have to hurt your neck looking through the lens in awkward positions.

IMG_1855

There were many, many different set ups like this that all had to be lit separately depending on the subject and angle. Tedious and challenging sometimes, when light is bouncing off of things here and there. Here the marble countertop was the culprit.

IMG_1857

So, instead of fighting the light, we fixed it another way with a cute yellow fabric.
Problem solved. And instantly cuter.

And all of this for a 2 second shot in the video.

IMG_1861

Hi.

Here I was waiting to reach ! into the bowls for a shot of me grabbing some of the coatings (carefully, through the tripod for the right angle). There are lots of little camera tweaks, so once you get everything in place, its best not to move if you can avoid it. Plus, theres less chance of tripping over light stands and messing up your setup. Im not naming names, but she has her hand raised.

P.S. This reaching shot didnt even make it in the video. But, thats what I like about Alex and Joelle. They get lots of different shots, just in case. Kinda like me when I bring all those extra sprinkles.

IMG_1892

This shot made it in though. Its a sliding shot moving across the candy coatings with a cool camera gadget to make the move seamless. I dont know its real name, but slider thingy sounds good.

By the way, hes shooting with a digital camera that also shoots video. I actually have the same camera, but Ive never shot video with it. Note to self: Need to learn.

IMG_1866

Sprinkles beauty shot.

IMG_1915

Panda Cake Pops in varying stages.

IMG_1919

Joelle took care of the sound, just in case the Pandas said anything funny.

Untitled-3

More tweaking. Its the tiny adjustments like this that make all the difference on screen.

IMG_1945

Heres another digital camera. On Steroids! With lots of attachments that are all bigger than the actual camera body. Crazy!

Untitled-4

The shoot was long, but lots of fun. Hope you like the video.

IMG_1948

Hope it makes you smile.

Or laugh.

Thats ok, too.

I also worked on second video for the Cake Pops Kit that just came out.

IMG_2728

If you follow me on Instagram, you might remember this pic from a few weeks ago when I was in San Francisco.

While I was there, I met up with 4SP Films again and we put together some more cuteness.

IMG_5027

Of course, I brought a few things with me.

By the way, if traveling a few miles with pops, is stressful. You can imagine what flying cross-country is like carrying cake pops and hoping you have everything and hoping when you arrive that you dont have broken pops.

Luckily, Im obsessive.

IMG_4968

On the shoot day, there was lifting by Joelle.

IMG_4971

Cake pop twirling for the camera by Peter.

IMG_5017

Curled ribbon dropping.

IMG_4975

There were cute tags

IMG_5018

And bags and tying tricks, too.

This video is a lot different than the first one. It was shot on green screen so they could change the background and its also animated. The pops had to be individually shot in varying stages of completeness as well as shot from different angles to m! ake them move if we wanted.

Tee deee us.

But actually not as hard as the first one. Because it was shot on a tabletop in one direction, there was basically only one lighting set up with a few adjustments. So that saved a lot of time.

IMG_5039-2

Im glad my mom could be there with me to watch all the fun. She enjoyed seeing the behind-the-scenes stuff, but I dont think she realized how long it would take. Shes pretty entertaining though and kept us all in smiles. If any of you have met her at any of the book signings, you know what I mean.

Untitled-2

Here they are. Glad to finally show you guys.

Cake Pops Book Trailer on amazon, the new one is the 2 minute video.

Cake Pops Kit Video on youtube. It will be added to amazon soon.

Thanks 4SP Films!

P.S. If anyone is wondering, I bought the Alphabet cards last year at Saint Cupcake Deluxe in Oregon. Ive been waiting for a reason to use them for something. And the pink striped wood cake pop stand is from KC Bakes.

Terrible Dim Sum Brunch Buffet @ Toh Yuen, Hilton PJ

Over the years Ive always had a bad habit of applying to too many Hotel Memberships without ever using their Complimentary Meal or Stay vouchers until it reaches its expiry.

Not wanting to waste away my vouchers this year, I started using them every month beginning with Hiltons complimentary lunch voucher, where I used at Toh Yuen for their Sunday Brunch Buffet.

Pan-Fried Ostrich Meat

Toh Yuens Dim Sum spread was halal and featured a variety of stations including Dim Sum, Chinese Cold Platter, Salads, Fried and Baked Dim Sum, Sashimi, Noodle Bar, Peking Duck and Desserts.

IMG_0407

The spread in my view was quite limited for its price and the quality of the Dim Sum was poor. BBQ Chicken Charsiew Pastry was left sitting on the counter for way too long making the pastry dense and not good. The Har Gow did not contain much shrimps and the dough was very thick.

My Noodles that was made to order contained overcooked prawns and Wontons whose skin was thick and chewy.

Made to order Noodles

The only thing I enjoyed was the Salmon Sashimi and cold Peking Duck which was decent compared with other dishes we ate. Desserts were not impressive either with miniscule cakes that were dry and rather plain.

Salmon Sashimi, Peking Duck, Chicken Charsiew

Overall for the price one would expect a much better Dim Sum Brunch Buffet. Being a Dim Sum Buffet Toh Yuen should focus on serving high quality Dim Sum rather than offer a myriad of sub-par dishes. Diners that want to enjoy a full buffet can always op for their Coffee House Buffet.
