Tony Roma's

After my 1st attempt at Tony Roma's, I always want to go back to try out more of their menu. Here come my 2nd visit :)

Complimentary Bread
Had a quite harden outer but soft inner, oh..I love the garlic butter spread, can I have more? *_^

Onion Loaf
Thin & crispy battered onion ring presented in special way. Although it's not greasy but can be quite cloying if eat too much =.="

Big Stake Burger
A thick beef patty, melted cheese, sliced tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickled cucumber & bacon strips sandwiched between the soft buns. Generous serving of fries as side.

Look at this, sinful huh~~
Portion definitely decent to feed a big eater like me! The beef patty was flavorful & juicy. The crunchy bacon strip giving it a special twist too.

Chicken Alfredo
The sauce was not too creamy nor watery, garnished with fresh chopped parsley leaves & dried chilies. Lots of chicken fillets can be found too *satiated*

Al dente pasta, every strand was coated evenly with sauce.

The meal is beyond satisfactory & I love the big portion food.

Italian Film Festival

Italian Film Festival in celebration of the
150th anniversary of the Unity of Italy

Its been 150 years since eight states independent of one another, each with its own administration, laws and interests came together as one in the Italian nation.

It was on March 17 1861 that unification of Italy was proclaimed. Since then Italy has gone from strength to strength on many fronts politically and economically and become a founding member of the European Union.

The Embassy of Italy will be celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Unity of Italy with the launching of an Italian Film Festival from June 30 to July 4 at the Malaysian Tourism Centre (MaTiC) in Kuala Lumpur.

The five-day film festival presents a diverse collection of movies, beginning with Presa di Roma The Capture of Rome and Arrivano i Bersaglieri The Bersaglieri are coming, which record the historical events leading to the election of Rome as Italys capital. Then there is Ma Che Storia (What a Story) which traces the path of Italy in its 150 years of unity.

In between there are movies on love, passion and drama, all of them somehow related to Italys history such as Allonsanfan, starring Marcello Mastroianni as an old and tired revolutionary leader who now wants to live a quiet life in Italy after Napoleons defeat. La vera leggenda di Tony Vilar The True Legend of Tony Vilar is about an aspiring singer who is in search of his idol, singing sensation Tony Vilar, who like millions of Italians left his country to look for a better life in the Americas. Seconda notte di nozze Second Wedding Night depicts life in post-war Italy.

The opening night of the Festival will take place in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Hall in the MaTiC at 8.30pm on June 30, while the other movies will be shown at the Mini Auditorium of the MaTiC from July 1 to July 4, and at 8.30pm. Admission is free.

Jiu Hu Char @ Home Cooked.

Jiu Hu Char is one of my family's 'must have' festival food.

This home cooked version-main ingredients are julienne carrot, celery, Shiitake mushroom, shredded yam (lots of it), shredded cuttlefish, prawn and strips of pork belly.

It will even taste better and sweeter if re-heated the next day.

It goes well with plain white rice or eaten plain.

But I like to eat it as a wrap i.e. fill up a fresh ice cool lettuce leaf with the Jui Hu Char and spread some sambal belacan (chillies shrimp paste) over it then fold it up and pop into my mouth-moist and delightful sweet-heavenly !.

Review: Dinner @ Clio, Eliot Hotel, Boston, MA

Dear readers, today I've experienced credit card blunder no. 2 :P The first time was in a cafe. I had only 100 dollar bills and did not have any small change. The owner of the cafe told me that I can use a credit card to foot the 8 dollar meal. I was like "Wuh-aaattt?" with a big question mark on my forehead. Second time was at Clio, a place that I would be reviewing after my short banter on credit card mishaps. I do not know how the system works but in Malaysia, you only take the card after you sign the bill. In US, they give you the bill and the card. You sign the bill without them looking at the card. I felt a little silly when I placed my card with the signed bill together.

I must have not used my credit card enough....

Look, I'm a cash sort of person. I always have this idea that using a credit card can eventually make you go broke. Although my dad is the mother-card holder, I always feel that using my card to pay off things is akin to using your own money.

Have you ever done anything ridiculous with your credit card before?

I digress. I should be reviewing on Clio, which was rated 3/4 in the Boston Globe and 16/20 in the Gayot Survey.

I was one of the first customers
Table clothes not well ironed enough heh but the ambience is still very romantic. :)
Bread roll - tasty but unfortunately, not warm
Pea sphere, Ossetra caviar, Dehydrated Violet and Peas
Wild Nettle Soup - Chinese Almond powder, violets, cod cheeks, porcini
Reminds me of hakka lei cha (pounded tea) (19 USD)
Poached Scottish Salmon with Black Sesame, Periwinkle (Think Sea Squirt), Bamboo Shoots, Chestnuts, Pineapple (39 USD)

Passionfruit - Lychee, Crumble, Kiwi, Elderflower Sorbet, Aloe Vera Gel, Basil
The plating reminded me of Senses' Black Forest!
There is no mistake that Clio is a beautiful restaurant. Located at the Eliot Hotel, which reminded me of Peninsula Hong Kong, it had an air of grandeur without being ostentatious. It was almost warm and welcoming, or should I say cool and calm, since summer is slowly engulfing quaint Boston?

I actually did not know what to expect of Clio. I did not know who the chef is. I did not come by recommendation. I relied on Urbanspoon Boston and the different sources of review I could find on Clio's Urbanspoon page. I prayed that it would be a good meal after ordering the quirkiest things I could find on the relatively straightfoward menu (In the US, entrees are mains, firsts are entrees).

For amuse bouche, I had the Pea Sphere with a little Ossetra caviar on top, dehydrated violets and peas. I popped the entire sphere into my mouth and was very surprised by the flavors that intermingled with one another. It started off savory, halfway, it got sour and ended with a refreshingly sweet note. I was impressed. Very impressed.

My starter was Wild Nettle Soup. I was expecting pretty small portions. I mean, I had many experiences with haute cuisine and most of them were small. While most people bemoan about the microscopic portions that is typical of fine dining, I take pleasure in enjoying small morsels of creativity and ingenuity. However, when the Wild Nettle Soup arrived on my table, I was overwhelmed by the size of the plate and the amount of food I was getting.

Otherwise, I felt that the Wild Nettle Soup was very creative but it may not rock everybody's boat unless one is well-acquainted with the interesting flavors of Asia. The soup comprised of fish cheeks, Chinese almonds and porcini. The Chinese almonds was pretty potent. If you despise the taste of Chinese almonds ( my mom claims that it tastes like cockroaches), this may not be for you. However, ! for the Chinese almond lover inside of me, this was a bowl of heaven.

Having said that, the wild nettle was also prominent in the soup. Drinking the soup reminded me of Hakka Lei Cha. The wild nettle soup has a herbaceous taste. It would have been stronger if not for the seafood base of the soup. The cod cheeks were very smooth and delicate. However, they lacked the unique sweetness that cod fish can offer.

My mains was poached Scottish Salmon in Sugarcane juice. Like the soup, there were many components to the dish but they were out of tangent at each other. I somehow disliked the combination of flavors. I know that the chef was trying his very best to put up a creative dish but sometimes, too much of a good thing can turn really bad. My mains was a very good instance of that. I actually finished up the salmon, hoping that I could find the right way to eat it or to combine it together.

Until the very last flake of the smooth, oily fish, I still could not find the answer to the burning solution. Plus, the fish did not really had the sweetness of salmon. However, it was impossible that the fish was not fresh because it would have shown through its colour and texture.

Desserts brought my mood back up again. I ordered Passionfruit Tart for desserts because after two courses, my tummy could barely fit anything anymore, save for an acidic dessert. The passionfruit tart was very refreshing and the tartness of it was perfect to cut through the sickening richness of the salmon main I had. All of the components of the desserts wow-ed me to no end. I enjoyed the elderflower sorbet, which had a subtle flowery scent to it and the frozen aloe vera gel. Perfect for the hot weather.

I would give Clio a 8 out of 10. 2 points deducted for the mains. I'm sure that other mains would be good... Man, I should have ordered the pork belly!

Little things:

-Cuisine: Fine dining, International, Fusion

-Service: Prompt. They deserve a 15 percent tip from the total bill!
-Portio ns: HUGE

-Budget: Total damage was 72 USD including tax. Excluding tips.

-Ambience: Romantic. Wished they'd ironed the table clothes properly though...

Here's some humble tips that we would love to share on what we did for our Registration of Marriage.
Even planning for a simple ROM could be mind-blowing but it's fun after all, especially when the hubby involved himself a lot in it.

Pre-ROM

#1 Save the Date
Decide on the venue for registration first so that you could plan ahead. We chose JPN Putrajaya and it would be best to drop by JPN to submit the forms at least a month earlier. They need at least 21 days ahead before your proposed date as your details/submissions need to be displayed for 3 weeks.

#2 Set a ROM Theme
Having a Theme is fun! Something easy and meaningful would be best for the guests to follow (e.g. dress code or gifts to match)
Our Theme was: DREAMY
Ladies in Cream & Guys in Grey

#3 Gifts for Guests
Gifts to match the theme are perfect match

#4 Gratitude Cards
Thank you cards for guests to show appreciation for their attendance as well as remembrance

Pre-ROM

#5 The Wedding Band
The most important item A ROM is never complete without the wedding band. Different from the proposal ring, these band would be a symbol of bonding for life.

IMG_2267

#6 Hand Bouquet, Attire & Heels
We had Champagne Roses, White heels to match the White Day Dress and not to forget to suit up your Groom.
Do look for good florists as I find my bouquet dry and not up to expectation.

My make-up artist: Citygal with the magic touch

#2 Hair-Dos
Chris's best friend made me look fresher with just a few bobby pins. Do some curls and pin it to one side. Adding a matching accessory would do magic. Not those big ones though

#8 The Signature
Officially man & wife. Oh, we suddenly felt grown up for a while haha

Our ROM 2803116

#9 Putrajaya
Putrajaya is the listed as the hotspot for pre-wedding shoots. Just drop by anywhere near the bridge or buildings for some shots. As for us, we went to the Pullman Resort nearby just for a quick ROM snapshots session

Our ROM 2803117

#10 ROM Lunch Venue
This would be a tough one. Deciding on the venue to fit in the guests,! decent food and most importantly not to exceed the budget. Having a caterer over at a garden terrace-like ROM would be my choice but budget would be exceeded.
We chose Levain Boulangerie & Patisserie as we thought it compromised our budget, decent food/ pastry/ desserts and classic environment.
We were given a private room at Levain just for ourselves. This was even better.

The Japan! Combo. I dont know why I like it so much. Or how did I end up choosing this over the bestseller - taroballs with whatever. Or what the heck was I doing in a shaved ice dessert shop in the first place? I dont know. But I really like it. Maybe its the soy ice crush. Soy milk is one of my favourite drinks - warm, iced or frozen. Or maybe its the chewy green tea balls. Or the slight bitter aftertaste and artificial chlorophyll scent that work wonders with sweetened soy milk. Like Starbucks costly, classy soy milk green tea latte - my only choice there. I dont know. It just tastes good. I have a loyalty card, by the way. The words Dessert Lover Club fill 1/3 of the card. Sickening, I know. And I'm just five stamps away from redeeming any item from the menu. But the Japan! Combo is no longer listed on their website. Instead, a new monthly special has been introduced. Sesame Sensation. Peanut ice with sesame balls. Great, just great.
