Simple Edamame Toast

IMG_2179

For lunch lets be real its not always fancy salad and irresistible pretzel dogs.

Usually, at the lunch hour, I open the fridge and pile whatever Ive got onto a few pieces of bread. Theres usually salt and olive oil involved. I believe that those are ingredients that belong on damn near everything.

Remember when I made this simple lunch?

Yea more things on bread with salt and olive oil.

dinner and dessert

Dinner and dessert are a different story. Something warm and tender is awesome for dinner. Chocolate is dessert even if it has black beans in it.

Please just consider this your reminder to keep it simple and flavorful.

Lunch shouldnt be a stresser. Lunch, however, should have balsamic reduction on it whenever possible.

Goat Cheese and Edamame Lunch Toasts

Slice a baguette into bite-sized slices. Top generously with soft goat cheese, steamed edamame, olive oil, coarse salt and coarse pepper, and a few drippings of balsamic reduction.

Its l unch and lunch is good.

Boxing Day Lunch @ Sage Restaurant, The Gardens Residences, Kuala Lumpur

Since I did a good job (*ahem*) cooking our Christmas day meal, Hubby decided to treat me (and everyone else in the family) to a lunch at my favourite restaurant for Boxing Day. Since we had our children with us, we asked to use the private room again. I guess since the restaurant was less busy, a waiter was stationed right outside the room to attend to our needs instead of us having to go out and trying to get the attention of their waiting staff when we need something.

However, one thing which really irked us was the fact that they stopped providing baby high chairs at the restaurant. I think it's their way of telling their customers that they do not "encourage" the presence of young children in the restaurant premises. Sorry Baby C and Baby D, but this will be the last time in Sage for you until you're a little more grown up :( No more family meals here for us.

Anyway enough of the negatives. The rest of the afternoon was great, from the service down to the food. Chef Daniel even came out to speak to us and we got a photo taken with him as a memento. Though we only ordered 4 set lunches for the adults, Baby C was also given a complimentary drink which made her very happy.

Love the freshly baked bread here.

Baby D is a fan

Virgin Mojito

Little miss with her complimentary drink :)

Both starters that week appealed to me but in the end we settled for 3 warm ocean trout with sakura cress and soy mirin vinaigrette and Hubby had the kampung chicken egg mollet on truffle toast with truffle shavings and Parmesan cheese. The warm ocean trout was a bit different than envisaged (thought it would be served in a chunk like this) but nevertheless very yummy and we also loved the wonderfully vibrant colour of the dish. Baby D enjoyed this very much as he keep asking for "more, more".

More, mummy, more...

My original choice for the starter was this egg mollet, but the name printed on the menu was a little misleading - "kampung chicken with egg mollet on truffle toast and Parmesan cheese". I asked the waitress if there were truffle shavings and she told me nope and since the menu didnt mention it either, I took her word and ordered the other starter. Turned it there was indeed a whole load of truffle shavings, and I was so regretful for not ordering this!! Hubby said it was very very delicious (to make me jealous!), honestly the amount of truffles already made my mouth water.

A simple dish cooked to perfection..

Truffles galore

For mains, we had 3 roasted marinated black cod fish with pane of oyster and cepe mushroom ragout. The fish was nice and flaky, but we didn't really care much for the sauce. The oyster was pretty yummy, lightly battered.

I think Hubby's slow cooked lamb loin with kipfler potato and thyme jus is much yummier. The lamb loin was nicely cooked to medium doneness, very tender and full of flavour!

Bavarois is one of our favorite desserts from Sage. Looks simple but it tastes really good. This kahlua bavarois was served with coffee jelly and cream cheese ice cream. The components shouldn't be eaten separately -- ie the coffee jelly eaten on its own is quite bitter but together with the bavarois, it's great.

Kids were sad cos this was the last time they'll get to come to Sage for a while :(

Morganfields, Pavilion KL Pork Burgers

Yes I know they are famous for pork ribs. But no, I didnt order any.

Thats cos Im a pork burger addict and I was having a major craving for pork burgers for ages, which has to be appeased pronto before I start PMS-ing on those around me. :-d

morganfields, pavilion kl - pork burgers

It was also thankfully one of the restaurants around that didnt feel there was a need to play annoying festival Chinese New Year songs during this festive season, sparing me the agony of endless looping of CNY songs in my head. :d

The restaurant is bathed in incandescent light, suited for its intended ambiance of casual dining and drinking environment. Divided into 3 main sections; theres an al fresco dining section outside, a bar and an indoor dining area.

There was a quite a selections of beers, perfect to go with a rack of ribs; but Im not a beer person so it was strictly food for me that day.

morganfields, pavilion kl - pork burgers-009

We started with 2 pork burgers, of which we eventally realized to be a BIG mistake, as both essentially tastedthe same though the men! us descr iption was deceivingly different!

Blackened Cheese & Onions Burger
Grilled with blackened seasoning and topped with cheddar cheese and sauted onions.Leon ordered this as he wanted to try the blackened seasoning or black cheese as we were lead to believe by the fancy name.

morganfields, pavilion kl - pork burgers-001

What we got was fundamentally a cheeseburger. No black cheese or blackened cheese. As you can see from the above, my cheese was as snowy pale as it could possibly be.

morganfields, pavilion kl - pork burgers-006

If it could be of any consolation, there was a subtantial amount of black pepper in the patty. However, the seasoning barely made any difference in terms of taste, as the pepper flavour was mild. While I liked the sweet sauteed onions, Leon didnt think it was worth a mention at all.

Here is our next burger; theSmokehouse Bacon Cheeseburger. Obviously we ordered this for the bacon and for the BBQ sauce.

morganfields, pavilion kl - pork burgers-002

The description says Glazed with Hickory BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese, sauted onions and crispy pork bacon.

But in the end, both patties were similar, and the only differentiating factor was the condiments that came with it.

morganfields, pavilion kl - pork burgers-005

The cheeses were the usual parmesan and cheddar, flat in taste and flavour. The BBQ burger taste primarily comes from the BBQ sauce. Some slices of tomatoes and a few leaves of lettuce with the same sauteed onions topped off both burgers.

To conclude our experience, we didnt enjoy our pork burgers. And while Leon would never step into Morganfields again, I might still hop in for the ribs, if a pork ribs craving ever strikes. After all, a foodie has to sample other offerings on the menu at the same establishment before passing judgement.
So whos up for the pork ribs? :)

Coffee brewing

A couple of weeks ago, before Christmas I saw an ad on my blog and it was coffee related. I wanted to check out new coffee beans as I was bored with the existing one already (which was bought from the supermarket). So clicked on it and that was how I found out about Auresso Coffee. They provide award winning freshly roasted premiumArabicacoffee bean, fine teas, coffee and tea accessories. Theyhave partnered with an award winning coffee roaster in Australia and have established a sister company in Australia to work very closely with the artisan roaster in order to bring the very best to the Malaysian market.

If you know my history, I hated coffee for a good 20 years of my life. I couldnt stand the smell of nescafe or any instant coffee and I didnt understand why people keep saying it smells so good (after coming out from the pantry). For the past 20 years of coffee hating, the only type of coffee I drank, was the good ol kopi-o from chinese hawker stalls. I would never touch any coffee with condensed milk or creamer.

It was only until I went to Sydney and everything changed (except the part where I still dont like instant coffee, coffee with creamer / condensed milk) I found my type of coffee; I also did a coffee workshop in my pastry course in LCB, which they included. It was a full 2 days coffee mind boggling session and caffeine.

Now if you dont already know, in simple terms, most coffee are characterized to robusta and arabica. The 2 most co! mmon bre ed. Robusta is grown on the lower ground, warmer weather and has a higher caffeine content. Most of these beans are used to make instant coffee cause its cheaper and more widely available. Arabica is grown higher on the hill, which has a cooler temperature. It has a lower caffeine content and is generally smoother in taste compared to robusta. It is also more expensive than robusta. Mixed origin beans are more commonly used when roasting coffee; and single origin beans are usually more expensive, the same with cocoa beans. Now if you ask me what type of coffee reigns the best, I would say its not the chained stores ones.

Ok now that my coffee history is done, here is a package from Auresso. I wanted to try the coffee since the one at home is almost finishing, and i wanted to serve coffee during Pot luck (but all ended up drinking wine) so I went on to buy Amada (means beloved in Spanish) which is a Silver award winning blend in 2011. Well, seems promising already. It has a sweet, smooth blend with lingering caramel notes and balanced acidity. I dont like coffee which is high in acidity, especially the after taste.

The espresso is smooth but slightly acidic (for me) if drinking without milk, so I made it a cappuccino and it immediately changed. Its much silkier this way, no need for sugar either. The people at Auresso were kind to send me extra stuffs, Kokolicious and the rubra tea sample pack as well.

Kokolicious is a drinking chocolate sourced from premium West African cocoa beans.ThisafricanRed cocoa is processed in France, and then blended with pure Australian cane sugar. There are no additionalfilters, starch, artificialflavours, coloursor preservatives. Ive tried a few drinking chocolate powder when we were sourcing for hot chocolate for a cafe. Some can be awefully sweet and some would turn out to be powdery in taste. Its not easy to find those that are at an acceptable sweetness and still have the real cocoa taste. I would say that kokolicious is pretty good. I made it with 2 tbsp of powder and 200ml milk, then froth it with the frother at the coffee machine. (You can use a shaker or just stir till the chocolate powder dissolves).

Perfect for a rainy weather, dip with biscotti or drop some marshmallows on top for an ultimate indulgence.

The Rubra tea sample pack comes with 5 flavours of lemongrass & ginger, punjabi chai, green tea sunshine, grannys garden and Japanese sencha. They all come packed i! n loose leaves in silken pyramid bags. Silken pyramid tea bags are biodegradable.

We tried the Japanese sencha and Green Tea Sunshine. Its a little dry and acidic (what the chinese call, siap).

All in all, we prefer the coffee better.

Would I buy from them again ? Yes I would wanna try other blends / origin of coffee.

You can order online from them and brew it yourself. Or you can check out The Red Beanbag in Publika @ Solaris Dutamas for their Rubra artisan coffee.

Kafe Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul @ Komtar Walk

Call me slow but I just realized the famous Penang Road Teochew Chendul has three branches already at Komtar Walk, Prangin Mall and Sunshine Farlim. What to do? I have been absent from Penang for far too long that I already lost touch with the local F&B scene. Although they do have a branch in Klang Valley at a Giant Hypermarket somewhere, honestly I wouldnt bother because I know the taste can never match the real deal up North.

ais-kacang

As for Ais Kacang, I discovered that most KL people tend to love the Southern version more, those with stronger Gula Melaka taste and totally void of Sarsi flavor. Well I have stayed at both places long enough to develop a passion for both versions. But, if I had to choose, it will be the Penang Ais Kacang without skipping a heartbeat. I just love the refreshing taste that Sarsi syrup gives and not to mention the extra colorful ingredients in it too.

chendul

The cendol @ RM2.50 is still as awesome like it has been. The pandan jelly noodles are firm with a bouncy texture while the coconut milk and brown sugar ratio is just nice. I have to admit I didnt know how to appreciate the pandan jellies, thinking it is the same everywhere until I stumbled upon some really bad ones outside Penang. Yucks.
Anyway, do keep in mind the prices are slightly more expensive if you are having it at the branches. Honestly, that doesnt bother me at all since I get to enjoy it properly in a better environment and more importantly, I got to wash my hands afterwards. If you h! ave eate n at the main branch before you would know how challenging it would be to keep your hands sticky free.

menu

They even have a complete menu now with including food like Char Koay Teow, egg tarts and assam laksa. Halal too.

cafe

Ordering is pretty much self service where you write down your orders on a chit and then pass it to the counter. The food will be delivered to your table and payment is only made after you are finished. If you are wondering, no there is no tax and service charge whatsoever in the final bill.

penang-road-chendul

Hawker food is often a headache for people traveling families especially when you have a baby around. So for those who wants to escape the heat and dine more comfortably, this new cafe would be the place to go.
However, if you are traveling alone or with a group of young people who can afford to stand some inconveniences and havent tried the original branch at Lebuh Keng Kwee yet, I will suggest you to head there just for the sake of authenticity.
