Taiwan Fruits and Vegetable Fair (till August 14)

IMG_2276

Apologies. I've been distracted with work.

Hopefully I am back on track. I'm returning to the blogosphere with some fruits and vegetables from Taiwan that was launched last Saturday at Empire Subang Jaya.

I've a big fan of fruits and vegetables hence it was great to discover some new variants of the fruits.

Taking centre stage for the opening ceremony was the jumbo watermelons - huge babies that needed two hands to cut them into half. I had a taste of the juicy melons and compared to their local cousins, the Taiwanese ones have a denser texture while still maintaining a sweet and juicy taste.

The whole ceremony took place at the front part of the ever busy Jaya Grocer, one of my favourite shopping places.

Everyone had a great time milling around to sample the fruits such as the Golden Mangoes. They kinda resemble the Thai versions in look but not in size (everything in Taiwan s! eems a l ittle super sized, I wonder if it is their water?). The flesh is silkier with very little fibre making it a better bite.

Another crowd favourite were the Kyoho Grapes. I've tried the Japanese and South Korean versions and the Taiwan ones are a little different. These thick skinned grapes come with a fragrant sweet juicy flesh that I often associate with grape gummies. I reckon the ones brought in were just the right ripeness as their skin and flesh could be eaten together like a plum. I often find the Japanese and South Korean grapes skin to be inedible since they are too hard.

This is the second time, Euro-Atlantic aka the fine fruits and vegetables purveyors are holding. The first one was also held in Empire Subang Jaya but on a smaller scale. One of the most popular items from the previous fair was also brought in - the white bittergourd. Genetically modified to remove the green colour, these gourds have a milder taste. The vegetable is often juiced with honey to produce a refreshing (but still bitter) healthy drink.

They had also brought in a water bamboo shoot that resembles leeks. Seems it is grown in water hence the smell is not so pungent but sweet.

Other fruits and vegetables you can get your hands on during the fair are guavas, green bamboo shoots, apple mangoes, President pears, sweet musk melons, red plums and etc.

The Taiwan Fruit and Vegetable Fair runs till August 14 at Jaya Grocer, Empire Subang; Jusco in Midvalley and Bandar Utama; Urban Food in SS2 Mall and Carrefour at Tropicana Mall.

Let move again to see more of London.A brief visit to St. Paul's Cathedral which is the second largest church building in United Kingdom.I realised most prominent churches were mostly built on the highest point of the cities.

corn, buttermilk and chive popovers

buttermilk popovers with corn and chives

I hope you didnt think I forgot about you this week, or actually hopped on a plane to Mexico, as repeatedly threatened during last weeks taco fest. The truth of where Ive been is far less interesting and could be roughly summarized as: man, am I a terrible cook this week. However, the week started out promisingly; I nailed a cookbook chicken dish on the first try (that Id been certain would be no good at all) and brimming with confidence maybe I should trust all of my cooking instincts! maybe I am good at this? I decided to make a dish of slow-roasted vegetables that turn out should never have been slow-roasted, unless vegetable leather is your thing. Oops.

more corn

I gritted my teeth and decided to move on, as I had on my agenda to prove that my recent acquisition of a popover pan yes, a pan that makes one thing, and one thing only, purchased by the person who used to insist that you buy no single-use items for a kitchen, unless your ! kitchen has cabinets by the dozen, in which case, can I borrow one? because I cant fit this pan anywhere had not been a late-night impulse purchase but a justified step in bringing us my idea of summery popover nirvana. Or something.

Mochi Sweets

We've never been major fans of mochi, but the delicate rice cakes at this new kiosk in Pavilion's Tokyo Street bowled us over. Could this be KL's best mochi?

Try all 12 flavors, for glutinous goodness' sake: sakura, black chocolate, cream chocolate, yam, red bean, caramel macchiato, chestnut cream, green tea, peach cream, mango yogurt, strawberry & blueberry cream. Ingredients are flown in from Japan.

Eaten chilled for a refreshing dessert that features lovely flavors laced with a subtle sweetness. The skin is like a petal-soft coat, swaddling a gooey paste that could be a compromise between caramel & ice cream. Impatience prevented us from letting these thaw a little longer.

Will mochi be this year's macarons? Probably not, but the ones here are certainly worth the calories. An elegantly packaged gift set comprising the complete dozen costs RM44.50.

  • Seriously Good Steaks @ Gibby's, Montreal

If you're looking to splurge your mullah on a good steak look no further than Gibby's. According to Laurent, Gibby's serves up some serious Steaks and Meat dishes but is an over-priced restaurant that is usually frequented by Tourists due to it's historical charm as it's located inside a 200 year old building in Old Montreal. Locals apparently would only go there during special occasions.

The restaurant sure does look historical with the furniture looking old and tired including their friendly wait staff who looked like they've been with the restaurant since the early 50's.

    Pickles, Bread and Bacon Bits

    Butter Roll
    Bacon Bits
Like many other Montreal Steakhouses we were served some Pickles and Bread. We were also given Bacon Bits which we used as a topping to the really soft and buttery bread.

    Salad
    Gibby's House Salad with Anchovies
The Garlic Dressing was really good on the Salad. It gave it a nice flavor and went really well with the Anchovies and Home Made Croutons.

    Giby's Cut Bone-in Rib Eye
    Gibby's Cut Bone-in Rib Eye
One of the best Steaks I've ever had. The Mustard Seed Crust was crispy and the steak had the right amount of Fat and Meat. It was juicy, flavorful, tender and big!

    Crepe Jubilee
    Crepe Jubilee
Basically it's an Ice Cream Filled Crepe. The Crepe was little hard because it was chilled together with the Ice Cream. I found the dessert a little too sweet for but I did enjoy the Cherry and Blueberry Compote which was a little sour to offset the sweetness of the Ice Cream Crepe.

    Vanilla Creme Brulee
    Vanilla Creme Brulee
This was delicious. The Creme Brulee had a really nice eggy texture which I thoroughly enjoyed.

    Mint Chocolate
We ended our meal with Gibby's Mint Chocolate. I loved the bitterness of the Dark Chocolate.

Overa! ll I wou ld definitely recommend Gibby's to any Rib-Eye lover. It is definitely very expensive but Gibby's Bone-in Rib-Eye is one of the best I've ever had. Not to mention they also serve a very good Creme Brulee!
