*Note: There will be a mochi-making demonstration at Tokyo St New Events Hall, Pavilion KL at 12pm and 2pm today (2/1/2012).
For the Japanese, New Year is one of the most important and significant celebrations for them. Mochi is traditionally made before the Japanese New Year and eaten during the day. If you like sweet treats, then try these mochis from Mochi Sweets.
Purple potato (RM3.50)
There are 2 Mochi Sweets outlets in KL, one in Tokyo Street, Pavilion KL and another in The Gardens Mall on the second floor. We've been eyeing these mochis for a while now, but have always been too full everytime we walked past. Until last week after the movies (we had a movie marathon - Sherlock Holmes and Mission Impossible 4:Ghost Protocol, both highly recommended), we were in need of a snack and decided to bring some mochi home to share with our family. I'm not sure if it's made here but they have imprinted the word "Fully Imported" on their counter.
There are a total of 12 flavours here; black chocolate, blueberry cream, sakura, mango yoghurt, chestnut cream (RM4.00 each), cream chocolate, red bean, purple potato, green tea, peach cream, caramel macchiato and strawberry (RM3.50 each). Since it was hard to decide which flavours to go for (they all sound good!), we went for the 12 Flavours Set for RM40 so we get them to try them all! There is also another set called "6 top! selling flavours set" for RM21. The price is a little high for mochi, but if the quality is good, I don't mind paying a premium price.

Cute festive paperbag
When you purchase the product, you will be given a box of frozen mochi. To be honest, I do not like buying frozen stuff so I was quite unhappy to see the staff taking out a box from the freezer. But I told myself to taste it first before making any judgment. The recommended defrost time is 20minutes in summer and 40minutes in winter and best consumed when mochi skin turns soft.
However, we waited for 2 hours and the filling was still very cold inside. Is it meant to be like this? Flavour and texture wise, the mochi was excellent. We enjoyed all the flavours, all unique in its own way and quite distinctive. My favorite is the mango yoghurt, and peach cream, in fact I think I enjoyed all the fruity flavours. The skin is soft and the cream really adds to the filling. We enjoyed our mochi with some Christmas tea.
When we paid at the counter, we asked the staff how long we could keep this for and she said 3 days in the fridge. In my opinion, I think the mochi has to be consumed on the day of purchase (also as stated on their packaging!!!) as it becomes too soft the following day.
Green tea
Purple potato
Mango yoghurt - my fav!
Caramel macchiato - Hubby likes this.
I think we were given two blueberry cream mochi and no sakura, as there was no difference in taste.
Cream chocolate
Chestnut cream
Peach cream
Black chocolate
