Easter Sunday & Bon Voyage Brunch @ Top Hat, Jalan Stoner
Housed in a gorgeous bungalow on the quiet Jalan Stonor, this restaurant will draw you in with its lulling character, friendly staff and traditional Nyonya and Western Cuisine.
The restaurant, at once relaxed and stylish, soothing and classic, has a distinctive air of a more gracious and graceful past
What better setting than that to hold a Bon Voyage party for two of my dearest friends from London, Peeps and Don-don, who were setting off on a round-the-world by train trip for their honeymoon.
Organized by the newlyweds affable mother Aunty Milli, we were treated to an afternoon of cocktails and bubbly, warm and friendly faces and delicious food.
Ladies were encouraged to wear hats, and the soothing sounds of water flowing into the garden pond mingled with birds chirping and soulful crooning from Simply Swing provided the perfect backdrop.
Lil Chef and I felt like wed been transported back in time
Tiny little Lindt Chocolate Eggs and exquisite homemade bookmarks greeted us at our seats.
Let me just say, with Lil Chefs sweet tooth these didnt last very long at all.
As this was a private event, we were given a set menu to choose from. Portions were also tailored to suit the occasion, so expect bigger portions when you order from the a la carte menu (click HERE to view Top Hats Menu).
Signature Top Hats
Served with homemade chili sauce
Unlike other top hats Ive tried, these were far more delicate, eventhough they were bigger.
The crisp cup broke apart easily upon first bite, the filling was moist and tasty, and the chilli sauce simply divine.
Mini Nyonya Laksa
Semi-Rich Coconut Curry Gravy served with a choice of yellow noodles, prawns, chicken & beansprouts
Thick and creamy, the laksa was bursting with flavour. I think semi-rich is an understatement, because in actual fact the broth was mild in spiciness, and very rich and coconut-ty. If its too mild for you, you can add as much of the accompanying sambal to spice it up to your liking.
Bouncy yellow noodles, fresh prawns, tender chunks of chicken, crunchy bea! nsprouts and sliced cucumber complete this warming dish.
Spicy Thai Mango Salad with Prawns
This was an exceptional salad. The prawns were very fresh and cooked just right, so they still had a bit of crunch with every bite.
Shredded carrots, cabbage and mixed salad leaves were tossed in a tangy, slightly spicy dressing. The fresh mango complemented the piquant dressing by adding a lovely, fruity sweetness.
Easter Sunday Rack of Lamb with Trimmings
I chose the lamb, with it being Easter Sunday and allIm glad I did. The lamb was tender and cooked medium-well.
I liked the charring on the outside that added a smoky flavour, while the inside still retained all that meaty juices. Nicely complemented by the homemade mint sauce, broccoli, asparagus and potatoes.
Malaysian Curry Tiffin
Lil Chef chose this local speciality, whereby the word Tiffin refers to an assortment of curries and condiments. On his plate was fluffy steamed rice, a dry beef rendang, alemak chicken curry, fried fish in sambal, potatoes in a mild sauce, deepfried anchovies with peanuts, and a plump salted egg. What a combination! An ! array of smells, spices and flavours all on one plate! The chicken curry was outstanding.
DESSERT
Top Hat Easter Sampler
Homemade Chendol
Shaved Ice with kidney beans, pandan jelly (chendol), topped with palm sugar syrup and coconut milk
Peach & Banana Crumble
Served with Fresh Cream
Traditional Fruit Cake
This Brunch turned more into a lunch-slash-tea as we only left at 4pm! We almost didnt want to leave
What a beautiful way to spend our Easter Sunday, with our enchanting people, in a charming setting, with mouth watering cuisine.
Thank you Aunty Milli for having us be a part of such a special occasion. To my darling Peeps and Don-don, I hope your journey by train around the world will be a! ll you w ant it to be and more! Happy Honeymooning!
And to everyone else, a belated Happy Easter!
