LONDON, May 12 Britons named Italian cuisine the best in Europe, followed by British, French and Spanish fare, according to a new poll.

In a survey of more than 2,000 people in the UK, 30 per cent of respondents named Italy as the European country with the best national cuisine. Next, 22 per cent of Brits gave their own cuisine a nod. France got 12 per cent of the vote, followed by the Spanish with six per cent and Greece with three per cent.

The survey results also revealed demographic splits: respondents aged 55 and older were more likely to stay true to their roots and name British cuisine as the best, while younger respondents aged 18 to 34 were more likely to say they preferred Italian food. Italian fare was also more popular among women.

British cuisine has succeeded in shedding its poor reputation as a culinary wasteland thanks to Michelin-starred chefs and food celebrities like Heston Blumenthal and Jamie Oliver whove become international food personalities.

As the survey, carried out by online travel site Holidayhypermarket.co.uk points out, 42 foods from the UK have also been granted protected geographical status under European law for everything from fish, meat, cheese and produce. Think Scottish salmon, Cumberland sausage, and Yorkshire pudding.

Meanwhile, in an effort to help consumers gauge the travel costs of destinations around the world, online accommodation site Hotels.com also released a Club Sandwich Index, which surveyed the average costs of a club sandwich in 750 hotels around the world. The priciest city? Paris at US$33.10 (RM113). Afp-Relaxnews
