This was another buffet I sampled last year and waddled home burping heavily albeit happily.
I remembered the flavourful freshly brewed soups and the amazing dessert spread. This year, the desserts were even better, with an exceptional Tapai Cake (tapai is a type of fermented rice wine) that was surprisingly pleasant, given that the smell and taste of tapai is an acquired taste.
This cake delighted both in flavours and texture, with a distinct tapai smell but not overpowering so. The lingering tapai taste actually adds an interesting naunce to the character of the cake. Im not a fan of tapai but I gave this 2 thumbs up!
Thats usually what I like to look out for in a buffet. Some familiar favourites are no doubt ! necessar y but some new, maybe even funky items, whether its a curry, a cake or a hot dish gave some buffets the edge to remain in the memory. Likewise, I would more keen to recommend and share with my readers as thats something different to look our for.
Heres another new cake creation entitledKek Budaya Dorsett,a masterpiece by Badrol Hisham Mohd Ali, Dorsett Regency Hotel, Kuala Lumpurs Pastry Chef. This cake is beautifully blended with distinctive Malay, Baba-Nyonya and Western flavours and the unique cake is layered with vanilla sponge, homemade fermented glutinous rice, and royal custard filling.
Yes, I think the desserts are good here at the Ramadhan Buffet at Dorsett Regency Hotel, KL!
Heres the bountiful dessert spread during my makan session here.
I daresay there were more than 50 kinds of dessert alone. Some just brings the kid out in you, such as these ones on sticks and cones.
Western desserts such as cakes and tarts were just as well prepared as their assortment of traditional kuih-muih.
Regardless if its a simple one like the carrot cake below, or a classic one like a chocolate cake and cheesecakes, most of the desserts here didnt disappoint!
Here are the local Malay and Nyonya kuih, which I must say was just as adeptly prepared.
Dodol a sticky glutinous rice cake made from hours of stirring over low fire to attain the smooth, sticky consistency.
Soupy desserts came in the form of Black Glutinous Rice with Coconut Milk.
And for durian lovers theSerawa Durianwas convincingly pungent.
Bubur Cha-cha.
Those with a sweet tooth are spoiled for choice for sure; for there was even a chocolate fountain!
For me, the ais kacang is a standardaccompaniment to my Ramadhan meals, just as essential as my lamb.
Speaking about lamb, now you see it.
.now you dont!
The lamb is no doubt a popular item in a Ramadhan buffet. I personally wont pay more than RM50 for a Ramadhan buffet if there wasnt lamb offered!
The same can be said for the grilled satays and seafood.
But the limelight was on the hot dishes by flamboyantChef Jaafar Oon, a well-known culinary master when it comes to local delicacies.
Your dinner will be graced bytalented and witty Celebrity Chef Jaafar Onn who together with renowned s! inger Ha iza, promises everyone a memorable dining experience.
Curries, rendang, assam pedas, masak cili padi, sambal, masak lemak, kunyit and etc, you name it, he cooks them. We had aromatic briyani, flavoursome curries and rich, freshly simmered soups that evening.
Anyone game for Kerabu Perut Lembu Cows stomach ceviche tossed in chilli and lemon? :P
Mee Rebus Sg Dua Utara hmm I wonder if its the Sg Dua from Penang?
Daging Dendeng.
I dont know about you but Im a sucker for fried bananas, potatoes and cempedak.
These food stations are located outside of the cafe and I almost missed them. Good thing I walked around after my 5th round of the buffet! *burps*!
To keep the menu exciting and the food fresh, the culinary team at Dorsett Regency Hotel, Kuala Lumpur will be changing the items on the Ramadhan Buffet menu daily. Thus, a whole month of excitement!
