Mama Baba @ South Yarra, Melbourne

We were heading towards Burch and Purchese on Chapel Street to get our dose of sweets when at a traffic light, we spotted the sign "Mama Baba". It took that 5-10 seconds before I realised that this was the latest place opened by the short pudgy bald guy on Master Chef (apologies to George, if you found that description rude).

Once that sank in (not the image of George but the fact that Mama Baba was just around the corner), we decided we will pop in for dinner that night. Luckily, the place was open at 4pm and we managed to get in to secure a reservation for later.

The place is rather hidden, literally at the end of the quiet and dim Daly Street (off Chapel Street). However walk into Mama Baba and it is a different story. While it is still dim, the whole place has "If you are hip and cool, we want you in" written all over it. That isn't exactly a bad thing as it was probably just the thing we needed after I was complaining to the Wife that I felt old and boring. The whole vibe and music made us "young" again during dinner.

The black cutlery was something different although in this case, was I being cynical to think that there was some form of advertising going on with Salt&Pepper or the other way around?

IMG_2573-001

I always give bonus points for compli! mentary bread and Mama Baba gets it with the focaccia bread. After seeing George advertising Western Star butter on TV one too many times, we weren't surprised that the bread came with what else but Western Star butter, apparently the best but I beg to differ.

I can't seem to find pictures of our starters but we did have a serve of polenta chips and culatello. The polenta was crispy on the outside and had a soft inside but polenta naturally tasting rather bland, we would have liked more of the chilli in that chilli sour cream dip provided on the side. The culatello, a kind of prosciutto was rather meagre in portion with bits of mozarella, radish and balsamic. Subsequent to the meal, I got to learn (where else but on Master Chef) that culatello is like the king of prosciutto which probably explains why there was no more than 4-5 see through thick slices.

Like the waiter / waitress will tell you or you can tell them you read it here first, Mama Baba is all about pasta and is split between Greek influenced (Mama) and good old Italian (Baba). Accordingly, the cheeses you get is different, I can't remember the name but the greek cheese really packed a punch.

IMG_2584-001

The tortellini came from the Greek side, filled with a prawn saganaki served with some tomatoes, feta and fragrant prawn oil. This w! as delic ious through and through.

IMG_2586-001

From the Baba side, we ordered the agnolotti with a slow cook pork filling on a bed of artichoke and dates and finished with mortadella and guanciale on top. While the filling was nice and the artichoke cooked beautifully soft with burst of sweetness from the dates, there was something wrong. In a typical Master Chef response, we asked "where is the sauce?". The dish just needed a little sauce to tie everything together, even if it was juices from the artichokes or even burnt butter.

IMG_2592-001

The "Ferrero Rocher" sounded awesome on paper (despite having Burch and Purchese desserts sitting in the fridge) but didn't exactly deliver. Rather one dimensional in texture, the nuts in the cake were rather flat too. The gelato on offer sounded tempting so if we ever come back, let's hope it delivers.

The meal came up to about $40 per pax and while that won't leave you stuffed, we didn't leave the place hungry. I reckon had we switched the starters for another pasta, I might have left the place even happier.

Mama Baba ! on Urban spoon

Verdict: 3.5 stars out of 5 stars. I don't think the place deserves that low rating on Urbanspoon and even if I was to be extra critical of this place (you know, having a celebrity chef behind the whole place), it is still a decent place for a plate of pasta (maybe a plate and the half).

Las Vacas, Yap Kwan Seng & MyBurgerlab, Seapark

Las Vacas was never in need of the 'third time's the charm' rule. Its outlets in Kelana Jaya and Mont Kiara were immediate hits, but every empire must keep expanding; the beef specialist's latest branch at Yap Kwan Seng could become its biggest triumph.

This is Las Vacas largest eatery, offering indoor and alfresco tables. Signaling surefire success, every table inside was booked by 6:30 on opening evening. Beware, latecomers who sit outdoors: mosquitoes might plague those fearless or foolish enough to wear shorts here.

The concept is clear: meat is the main event, but this branch boasts Las Vacas' widest menu, encompassing everything from beef croquettes to beef bruschetta.

Wagyu Karubi (RM35+), boneless spare ribs that score for succulence.

Pan-sauteed beef wraps, coating roasted vine tomatoes (RM18+). Everything we ordered here was flavorful, but there's a problem: Las Vacas seems to rely too heavily on sauces and pepper.

Ox tongue, thinly sliced and grilled, then drizzled with wasabi mayonnaise (RM45++). Many will like this, but we long for the simplicity of a Korean barbecue version, where the meat shines unadorned. Still, that's a matter of preference.

Angus grass-fed rib-eye (RM78+ for 300 grams), cooked a little too much past medium-rare, but still acceptable. Blessedly, the credit card facilities here are working already, curbing a repeat of what we encountered at Las Vacas Mont Kiara two years ago.

The meat might be halal, but we're thankful that wine is sold here, by both the bottle and glass.

We wanted to try Las Vacas' RM120, 250-gram-patty Wagyu burger, but it was unavailable during our visit. A beef-lover nevertheless can't surrender so feebly, so we drove more than a dozen kilometers from Yap Kwan Seng to Petaling Jaya's Sea Park ...

... returning to MyBurgerLab, where some of the Klang Valley's tastiest beef burgers can be had. No, they're not Wagyu-grade, but they're still wonderful.
Main entry on MyBurgerLab @ Sea Park: July 11, 2012.

MyBurgerLab might be PJ's busiest eatery this week, thanks to a largely college-age crowd; it opens at 5pm (except on its Monday rest day), but it sometimes finishes its entire stock of some 150 burgers by 9pm, two hours before it's supposed to close.

Brace yourself for a bit of a wait at peak hours. It might take thirty minutes, but hey, folks who want burgers in a hurry have numerous other options.

We tried a trio of MyBurgerLab's charcoal-bun bovine beauties, including "The Hangover" (RM16), topped with hash brown, maple syrup and shiitake and enoki mushrooms. Satisfyingly hearty, but when we contemplated this burger's name, we wondered whether we were the restaurant's only patrons legally old enough to drink.

Say Cheese 2 (RM17), with a double patty and double slices of sharp cheddar for (wait for it) double the pleasure!

A Beautiful Mess (RM18), the most expensive and expansive burger here, with a smashed patty partnered with a portobello mushroom and sunny-side-up. Impossible to eat like a gentleman, but it's one fine mess.

MyBurgerLab is a pork-free eatery that serves no liquor, but burgers taste better with booze, so ask the friendly service team here for a disposable Pepsi cup and pour some red wine into it. Or maybe not _ we gulped this without permission, for which we are deeply ashamed.

Are you BUBBaLICIOUS ?

Prego
!

There was an amazing array of food, even with my hollow legs (hubby often jokes that this is how I manage to put away so much food), I didn't manage to try all the food that was available but what I did try was really good.

The cold antipasti was placed all along the bar and included salads, cold cuts and seafood as well as antipasto "bubbles" such as marinated mozzarella bubbles. I particularly enjoyed the egg filled with tuna mayo and capers, slipper lobsters, fresh king prawns, and freshly shucked oysters.

Fresh seafood.. loved it

Desserts are particularly fun- this is where you will find most of the bubbalicious inspired items such as a dessert bubble spoon wall, creme brulee with Cointreau bubbles, jelly bubbles, and a cute mango and yogurt "sunny side up on toast".

Boozy jelly bubbles (classic cocktail jelly bubbles)

Peanut butter cupcakes

Kids have a Bubbalicious time too..

With the new Bubbalicious brunch, a new kids club area is set up at the lower lobby to ensure that the little ones are entertained while mummy and daddy enjoy a leisurely meal. They will be manned by trained nannies. It was very nicely set-up, with Ikea play kitchens, rail track, video games, play houses along with a buffet selection for kids and there is even a make-your-own-milkshake station for the kids to get creative at. Kids below age of 5 eat for free, while children from age 6-12 years old will receive a 50% discount.

The hot food items are brought to your table hence you can just sit back and let the food come to you! The pizzas were ! as good as I remembered them, and I loved all the grilled items such as lamb chops, quail, sausages, mackarel as well as the roast lamb. A memorable dish that I had this afternoon was the parmesan custard with sardine toast... wish there were more toast for us to dip into the creamy parmesan custard!
