Weng Yin Seafood Village @ Port Dickson

Continue from the previous post. It's dinner time! We drove around Port Dickson town to look for restaurant recommended by Yvonne ~ Weng Yin Seafood Restaurant . With the assist of GPS, we manage to reach there easily :)

Restaurant was quite empty when we reached since it's only 6pm+. Both indoor & al-fresco seats are available here.

While we were busy tucking in, the dinner crowd start filling up the restaurant mere minutes.

Oyster Omelet (Oh Chien)
Quite a lot of plump oysters in the omelet but it's way too oily~~

Fried Calamari

Fried Fish Cake
Recommended by the waitress. These home made fish cakes were bouncy.

Kangkung with Sambal Belacan
The chef must be heavy handed when come to oil, again this vegetables was really oily >.<

Overall, the food here was delightful to the palate but would be better if less oil is used =.="

Birthday/Anniversary/Mother's Day.

Every year the month of May make me poorer and burn a big hole in my wallet.

So this year I have a dinner plus karaoke for my birthday, my daughter's wedding anniversary and Mother's day all on the same day-killing three birds with one stone !

This dinner was held at one of the VIP room in Pantai Seafood Restoran in Sg Kayu Ara.

Before the dinner -Michelle and Samantha entertained us with their great solo and duet songs.

There were nicely wrapped presents for me and my wife.

We ordered ala carte dishes from their extensive menu.

Overall it's was a happy, joyous and great dinner.

Four Combination Platter-a great dish to start the dinner. Kepah (clams)in a superior soup-sweet and fresh.Sea prawn wit! h salted egg-crispy and fleshy with a fragrant salted flavor.Sliced Lotus root stuffed with prawn paste in a white egg gravy-very crunchy served on the side with broccoli.Steamed Soon Hock (Marble Goby) in a good grade soy sauce and peanut oil-fleshy, sweet, flaky and the star of the night. Thai styled Pig Trotter-crispy deep down to the bones.

Asparagus with prawn-too old and thick rendering it to a bitter taste was returned to the kitchen.
Salted mud crabs to end the dinner-fine, sweet and succulent flesh with fragrant duck egg yolk flavor on the outside. Local cut mixed fruits to aid the digestive system.

Endless Noodles @ Pineland Road, Brisbane

I like how diversified my team in office is. As of last month, we had a new leader come in and officially my internal team in Brisbane (at least) comprise of no Australian (well at least by birth). While my Irish boss hasn't recommended any place where I can find some guinness stew, my chinese colleague told me to try out this noodle shop down in Sunnybank, the Chinese suburb of Brisbane.

Apparently, famous for their handmade noodles and their steamboat, it was just the perfect thing to have that chilly weekend night. However despite the chill and the fact that we were seated outside, there were no takers for steamboat (something which we will be coming back for) and everyone went for noodles; the zhar jiang mian.

Minced pork and handmade noodles; loved the texture of the noodles but the pork mince was a little on the bland side, nothing a few drops of soya sauce can't fix.

The dumplings were how dumplings should be, crispy bottom, chewy top and a moist filling.

I decided to go for the protein option and ordered a beef poached in chilli oil/water. Potent with the spicy kick, t! he let d own was the rather tough beef.

All in all, the noodles will definitely get us visiting them again and the steamboat sounds like a good option considering the cold weather has just started.

Verdict: 3.5 stars out of 5stars. No frill handmade noodles, just the comfort food you need sometimes.

The Peak (Bandung)

The Peak is a very famous high-end restaurant in Bandung, quite distant from the town center. If you decide to visit it, you will need at least 1 hour, and you have to make sure you have a ride back home.

The restaurant has a panoramic dining room with floor-to-ceiling glass windows. From there, you can get a stunning 360 view of the surroundings. The only problem is that the weather is not always good so in case of rain, you might not see so many things. Don't come at night also.

The Peak is clearly upmarket and touristic. A meal will cost you at least Rp100,000 if you order local dishes, but much more if you go for western meals with imported ingredients. For instance, steaks cost from Rp68,500++ to an incredible Rp688,000++ for the Kobe beef! You can also choose to have a drink only, and it is very reasonable, for instance Rp21,000++ for a strawberry juice.

Overall, I recommend The Peak for its superb surroundings, even though it is a long ride from Bandung. I also enjoyed the design of the restaurant and the quality of the service. On the negative side, it is pricey and the food is average.

Sierra Caf (Bandung)

Sierra Caf is a big restaurant in Dago Pakar, with a nice view over the hills of Bandung. There are different dining areas, on four floors, with a total capacity of 700 clients... It is not the place to go for an intimate dinner.

Most people come to Sierra with tour groups or for special events: weddings, seminars, anniversaries, etc. I thought the whole place lacked charm and it looked neglected. Compared to its competitors, such as Maja House, The Valley or The Peak, I would say the standards are much lower.

Since many tourists visit the place, the menu is quite extensive and features dishes from Japanese, Italian, American and Indonesian cuisine. The food we ordered was fine, but not excellent. It is obvious that you pay a premium in Sierra because of its location, but they serve the kind of food you can get elsewhere for much less.

Overall: Not recommended, except if you come with a big group.

rhubarb streusel muffins

whole wheat rhubarb streusel muffin

Today Im conquering some frequently unanswered frequently asked questions.* In short, no, my cookbook isnt done yet. But Deb, Im sure youre thinking, How can it not be done yet? Bloggers always finish their books in 6 to 9 months! And didnt you start it over a year ago? At first I thought it was because I had grossly, dramatically and almost hilariously (but in that ha-ha-ow kind of way) underestimated the number of hours Id need to work a week to get it done. Then I blamed the toddler, depriving his elders of much needed sleep, leaving me bleary eyed and ineffective when I was supposed to be drafting my masterpiece. But neither of them are as true of this: Its the breakfast section. I cant put it to rest.

rhubarb, diced

It started small and tidy, about 8 recipes. But I kept adding to it. I kept tweaking what was just fine to begin with. It became an obsession. I starting thinking about muffins while pushing swings at the playground, getting wound up about fritattas while lumbering back from yoga and jotting down notes about French toast while in places that were neither French nor toasty. Ostensibly, I handed the breakfast batch into my editor January but Monday still found me still pulling pancakes out of the oven that I couldnt bear not to include in the lineup. It had to stop. No more! I told myself in the same tone I use to keep the toddler from his curious habit of removing things from his dresser and putting them in mine. (A bur! p cloth where my pants should be? You shouldnt have!) But it didnt work (never does, really) as even yesterday I found myself making a list of breakfast recipes Id add to the section if I hadnt cut myself off.

Hummingbirds

Walk past too fast and you might not notice that this Bangsar boutique now boasts an in-house cafe that opened this month.

Wasabi macarons are the must-have. Everyone who loves wasabi's effect on sushi should adore this too _ the buttery wasabi-laced ganache is distinctively and delightfully spicy, completely complementing the macaron's sweetness. If you eat only one thing today, let this be it!

Other flavors include the more commonplace raspberry, rose, strawberry, black sesame, lemon, orange, passion fruit & mango. Certainly comparable to Nathalie's and Babycakes in most ways. Each macaron costs RM5, placing them on the high end, but they're worth it.

Nevertheless, man cannot live on macarons alone. So let us eat cake! This luscious durian cake is more than impressive, with a creamy, pulpy center and naturally stinky aroma that clearly comes from real fruit, not mere mousse. The downside: one slice costs a hefty RM16.

Chocolate fudge cake. Less memorable, but still satisfactory (especially reheated).

Peanut butter cupcake in the foreground, red velvet behind. Also among the city's best; the toppings are superbly dense and rich, while the cake base exudes the fresh feel and mouthwatering moistness that many other cupcakes lack. A fair bargain at RM6.50 each.
