Phuket Lobster @ Kang Eang Pier, Phuket

We had our first dinner in Phuket at Kang Eang Pier after browsing through several websites to find out which Restaurant in Phuket serves up good seafood and offers a beautiful environment.

Kang Eang boasts a beautiful outdoor setting that overlooks the Sea and features a variety of live seafood that can be cooked using several methods. Phuket Lobster was definitely on our list of dishes to order as we picked a hugh 2.8KG Lobster in addition to other dishes.

2.5KG Lobster

Fried Oyster Omelet
Fried Oyster Omelet
We were hoping for a Crispy Omelet but got a rather soft Omelet. Nevertheless the Omelet was delicious. It was light, fluffy and contained a lot of mini-oysters that were not overcooked.

Tom Yam Goong
Tom Yam Soup
The Tom Yam Soup was spicy but had a nice Sour Taste that was balanced with a slight touch of Coconut Milk.

Green Chicken Curry
Green Chicken Curry
The Chicken Curry was rich and thick from the Coconut Cream used. It was really fragrant and went well with White Rice.

Pineapple Fried Rice
Pineapple Fried Rice
The Fried Rice was good but was not the best I've had. I wish it had more curry powder to give it more flavor

Grilled Calamari
Grilled Squid
The Squid was so tender and well seasoned!

Grilled Tiger Prawns
Grilled Tiger Prawns
These were so fresh and good. The prawns are not overcooked and had a nice meaty texture! The Roe was also equally delicious.

Salt-Baked Fish
BBQ Fish
We were so stuffed when the Fish came but it was quite good nevertheless. It was moist and wasn't too salty.

Baked Lobster Thermidor
Baked Lobster Thermidor
One of my all time favorite methods of cooking Lobster. The Lobster Meat had such a nice meaty texture and was very sweet. It went well with the Mustard Cream Sauce and of course Cheese :)

Grilled Lobster with White Wine and Garlic
Grilled Lobster with White Wine
Delicious as well! The Lobster was grilled perfect and went well with the White Wine and Dill.

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed the food at Kang Eang. One could definitely get better food at a cheaper price elsewhere but Kang Eang's beautiful setting, excellent service and good food more than makes up for the price.

Santouka Ramen, Tokyo Street, Pavilion

I've been a bad blogger. The back log of posts is piling up, and it suddenly dawned on me that deep in the archives lurked a post that is long overdue. My apologies to the organisers and proprietors, BUT, on a brighter note, I have been told that since its opening somewhere back July, the place has become a runaway success, and people even have to queue to savour a taste of this delectable ramen.

We were invited to preview SANTOUKA RAMEN, in Tokyo Street, Pavilion Shopping Centre. Everything was spanking new, including Tokyo Street, as people hurriedly rushed to meet the deadline for the official opening the next day, with the Japanese ambassador himself as the guest of honor.

The concept of Tokyo Street itself is rather fascinating. Dominating the area is the huge Daiso store, that famous RM5 store, that has taken KL quite by storm. But I digress.

Yeah, Ramen. That ubiquitous Japanese noodle, that is slimmer than the sobas and udons. Probably is to Japanese what our wantan mee is to the Chinese. (As opposed to our fat hokkien mee etc).

These replicas of the real thing do help the uninformed make an informed decision. Afterall, not many locals speak Japanese.

Phot! obucket
The pan fried gyozas. Lovely and crisp.

Photobucket
There is obviously some skill involved in making these type of eggs, because it is not easy to ensure the whites are all hard, whilst the yolks are soft and almost runny.

Photobucket
Deep Fried Chicken pieces, which are thankfully thighs, and moist and succulent. I can't understand breast eaters. Might as well eat blotting paper.

Photobucket
Tokusen Toroniku. Pork Cheek Char Siew Japanese style. Lovely and tender, but a bit too lean for my liking. We are mentally used to Char Siew being artery clogging with layers of divine fat.

Photobucket
...yup, fat like the one in t! hat solo piece of pork belly. Apparently one bowl comes with only one slice of this precious pork. The pork broth (did I mention it was not halal? ) is tasty, and wholesome, although I am sure it is laden with that secret ingredient that laces most Japanese soups. The shio ramen's broth was lovely, light and yet chockful of flavour.

Photobucket
They do have a few varieties of soups, including a spicy version.

Check out the review by IAMTHEWITCH here.

They must have certainly have a winning formula, for not many establishments, apart from government departments and Maxis, have long queues waiting to be served.

Heres whats going down if you dont know which way is up. Ill start at the beginning:

The Joy the Baker Podcast is like a weekly, 45-minute radio (but totally not on the radio) show with me Joy the Baker, and Tracy from Shutterbean.

Sure we talk a bit about food and blogs, but really we like to get down to brass tax

tracy ad joy

We talk about growing up in the 90s and why mood rings are so important to us. We talk about red flags when it comes to boys and restaurants. We talk about washing our hair with baking soda. We talk about long distance relationships. We talk about doughnuts and bacon. We talk about road trips. And we talk about the difference between Tracys married life and my single living status. Were girls. Were classy, modern, hip ladies and we ta! lk about stuff.

This photograph pretty much sums up our podcast. What could go wrong there?

The Joy the Baker Podcast is featured on a site called Homefries. Get into it!

You can download the Joy the Baker Podcast through iTunes.

If that seems complicated, you can head over to Homefries and listen to the podcast right from the post.

Heres some things youve missed if you havent had your ears on this noise just yet:

Joy and Tracy Pay it Forward. How to increase those good karma points.

We are Not the Cool Kids. Its just the truth.

Joy and Tracy are in a Long Distance Relationship. From friendship to romance, long distance relationships are real life.

Is The Grass Always Greener? Joy and Tracy discuss married life vs. single life, home ownership vs renting, chest and butts. Uh-huh. We go there.

And most recently, Joy and Tracy get in touch with their Inner Hippie. Baking soda shampoo, coconut oil shaving gel, and homemade granola. A little hippie never hurt anyone right?

We made these for you. We hope you like to listen!

The Zun Kitchenette @ Sunway Giza, Kota Damansara

The Zun Kitchenette at Sunway Giza is one of the many food outlets you can patronise. If you planning to arrange an lunch appointment somewhere in Kota Damansara. Then I would suggest you tell your friends to meet at Giza and decide later as what to eat, ... there are so many choices in the mall.
Braised Pork Knuckle in dark soy sauce & vinegar - a good choice.
Bak Kut Teh by The Zun Kitchenette .... not bad a choice but if you want a better one go to Klang.Beehon with fish fillets in plain soup for those who have a healthier liking.Rice of the Zun Kitchenette.A simple poached veggie.

Malaysia International Gourmet Festival (MIGF) 2011 Gala Launch at Sunway Resort & Spa

Its Raining Chefs this October! The official slogan for year 2011 Gourmet Festival. This is the second year where I get involve in this event. Tonight I was invited to attend for the Gala Launch as a media by Asia Reach Events. A big thanks to them and the event was grand and well managed.

Me and Dato Chef Wan

Chefs of KL Hilton Cam whoring with Chef Wan
The Malaysia International Gourmet Festival (MIGF) will be held over 31 days from 1st 31st October 2011 with 28 of the countrys very best restaurants taking part. The gala launch were held at Sunway Resorts & Spas Grand Ball room. The whole ball room were decorated with lots of electric candle lights.

The chefs picture also were hang on the roof to illustrate raining chefs which I find pretty creative. It was as if the chef were floating around.

Into its 11th consecutive year, MIGF is a month-long fine dining festival that draws visitors from all over the globe to taste and apprec! iate the international standard of cuisines available in Malaysia and the expertise of the countrys top resident chefs.

Its Raining Chefs! is the theme for this years Festival a deliberately lighthearted tagline aimed at giving the Festival universal appeal. Malaysia is a relaxed and friendly food destination, says Dato Steve Day, the Festivals Organising Chairman. Fine dining here is not only about serving the best cuisines and having top-notch service standards its about having fun too!

MIGF is an integral part of Tourism Malaysias Fabulous Food 1Malaysia initiative a strategy aimed at promoting the countrys unique food capabilities to the world.

If you love fine dining, Malaysia is the place to be this October. Throughout the month, the countrys leading restaurants will serve up their own individually created special Festival Menus. All come at special prices to encourage diners to taste as many of these fantastic foods as they can.

Guest were greeted with free flow Kronenbourg French Beers before entering the Grand Ballroom.

Foodies everywhere can make a date with Festival restaurants to enjoy these once-in-a-year signature menus which are served with or without specially-paired wines.

A host of top-class restaurants and hotels are involved, with their Master Chefs all trying to outdo each other in creating their own special menus for the occasion. Alongside the Fest! ival Men us, each restaurant and hotel boasts deals on everything from cigars and wines to accommodation and breakfast packages, with most offering a special gift on arrival and even a birthday cake if you celebrate your special day during the Festival!

Year after year, regular festival goers wait in anticipation to see what each Festival Master Chef will create in terms of exciting new signature dishes and masterpieces a process that has seen the variety of cuisines and culinary creativity exceed all expectations since the Festival began in 2001. In the time since then, Malaysias fine dining industry has grown from a virtually zero base to the vibrant fine dining scene we see today.

Overseas visitors can also enjoy special MIGF Gourmet Tours accommodation and dining packages which are fully supported by the Ministry of Tourism Malaysia. The tour packages offer good-value accommodation and dining with extended stay options, which will take participants to select locations outside of Kuala Lumpur. Ril's Steakhouse

A restaurant with real character _ the food is executed with flair, while the service team is confident & cheery, but what people might love the most about Ril's @ The Warehouse is its evocative, hidden-secret setting: a Chinatown shop-house molded into a soaring space that marries old-world elegance with industrial edginess. This is one of 2011's best new outlets.

Brilliant bread rolls _ fresh, fragrant & filled with caramelized onions, we believe. Accompanied by soft, smooth butter that's super-simple to spread. Our only fear: these are so dense & heavy, customers could end up stuffed before the main gastronomic event.

Gemas Gold bone-in rib steak _ much heftier than it looks in this photo. There's no mention of Wagyu, Kobe or 1824 on Ril's menu, though on the bright side, that eases the pressure on our wallets. The chef's recommendation on this recent evening was Gemas beef, which comes from cattle sourced from Australia but reared in Negri Sembilan.

A 750-gram behemoth for two. Ril's menu describ! es it we ll: "cooked at the most intense heat to create a seared black crust with melting, medium-rare meat within." We'll add that it oozes with bold, concentrated flavor. No sauces required, though garlic jus is the house specialty.

Apple crumble _ one fine, hot mess, matched with The Last Polka's gula melaka ice cream & a luxurious hibiscus jam. Creativity is crucial to Ril's recipes: the menu might seem littered with familiar fare (tuna tartare, chicken casserole, sticky toffee pudding), but what elevates everything is impeccable preparation & the use of wild-card accompaniments.

Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec, Mendoza, 2007.
For earlier entry on Ril's crazysexycool cocktails: September 29.

Ril's only opens in the evening, unlike The Warehouse's cafe downstairs, but it boasts a bar with happy hours starting at 5 p.m. Two-for-one cocktails & free steak sandwiches before 7 p.m.

Still a calm refuge for n! ow, sinc e Ril's only began operations this week, but that could change.

Finally, who is Ril? That would be Khairil Ibrahim. And what about the rest of the food here? Well, another entry awaits, without a doubt.
