Above normal and spicy sushi maki, skip the spicy one and just go for the normal salmon maki. And also a box of salmon sushi which looks fatty and delicious.

    Cafe Libre

A pleasant neighborhood cafe with a respectable-looking menu, though the food that we sampled on a recent weekend teatime excursion fell slightly short of expectations.

Jalapeno scrambled eggs on muffins. Simple enough for some to whip up at home. Nothing woefully wrong with this, but it was forgettable, with flavors that failed to ignite sparks.

Smoked salmon & cream cheese bagel. Would have worked much better with fresher, more succulent slices of salmon and a thicker serving of cheese.

Malted milkshake (rich & creamy) & Waldorf juice (with apple, celery & cinnamon).

Nasi Briyani - Hyderabad Recipes at Solaris Mont Kiara

Mont Kiara here I come. Two factors conspired to moved me here lately for some entertaining and food. A good friend moved in to Sophia and my son is studying inTaylor's Sri Hartamas since June for his Cambridge A-levels.

This old friend was a makan kaki until a failed marriage. He went working on some projects overseas. We had gone food hunting in time past and one was a memorable eat 10 years ago in Ipoh where we hunted down a shop that served steam fresh water Parang fish belly. Then we were off to Kong Heng and Sin Yoong Loong. For starters, he has treated me to Nathalie's Gourmet, Haagen Dazs and Brussels. So its time to explore this area just 15 -20 mins drive from Bandar Sri Damansara.

At Hyderabad the three of us have some modest food: mutton and chicken briyani, naan and mint and masala chai tea. 'Modest' as this trio combined age is over 150 years:-) We were regaling on our past and also talked alot on networking and mentoring which is our strong points from the standpoint of our professional work. It was flowing back and forth, strong and fast so we adjourned to Haagen Dazs for more talks. Good food, desserts and company, the saintly trio of a good life!?
Selling on history behind Hyderabad, the food better be good! Each culture has their own idiosyncrasies. One of the quirky thing about Hyderabad Recife was their meat was buried under the Briyani Rice. I find this interesting almost unassuming and humble.

One of the best gravy for our rice and Naan.
    Fluffy, buttery Naan.
Fantastic Basmati Long Grain Rice. Double click on the picture and take a closer look. It almost look like tiny silver anchovies. It tasted heavenly with all the spices.

    Lavender and Toasted Walnut Scones

    IMG_4839

    How diplomatic is your shower?

Do you have minty unisex soaps? Do you have pleasant, not completely feminine smelling shampoo?

Do you hide the pumice stone in the bathroom cabinet? Whats going on with the face wash situation? Does it smell like you know, soap?

I might have an issue. Im rocking gardenia body wash, crazy flower town shampoo, an excessive variety of hair conditioners, lavender soap, and rose face wash. Its a lady paradise. Truly.

and Ive noticed that not a drop of my lady products are used when a certain handsome-handed gentleman I know uses my shower.

I might need to get him some man soap.

Some people prefer to eat their lavender as opposed to bathing in it, I suppose.

Im not complaining. Ill keep the expensive ladys paradise to myself, and share the lavender in scone form.

I think lavender is just pretty.

In food form, lavender is more fragrant that flavorful. It adds a delicate sophistication to the scones.

Soapy? Perfume? Yes if you add too much.

    IMG_4793

1 tablespoon of lavender is the perfect amount. Oh! Toasted walnuts too! The toasted nuts really bring these scones back down to earth. I love what the crunch and toasty flavor add to the scones.

    IMG_4798

Ps. Im pretty sure this kitten is not a kitten anymore.

    IMG_4863

Honey glaze because were just trying to pretend like its tea time and I like glaze on everything.

    Look how pretty this is!

These scones are buttery and flaky. They wont flatten and spread while baking. Great texture and a unique fragrant nature.

Make them for yourself. Feel fancy.

And seriously help me out with this shower situation. I need you.

    Lavender and Toasted Walnut Scones

    makes 8 biscuits

    For the Biscuits:

    1 tablespoon dried lavender

    1/2 cup walnut pieces

    3 cups all-purpose flour

    3 tablespoon granulated sugar

    4 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

    3/4 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold, cut into small cubes

    1 large egg

    3/4 cup buttermilk, cold

    For the Glaze:

    1 cup powdered sugar, sifted

    1 tablespoon honey

    1 tablespoon milk

Place racks in the center and upper third of the oven and preheat to 425 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.

Using a spice grinder, a mortar and pestle, or a clean cutting board and the back of a knife, grin! d or pre ss the dried lavender. We just want to break it up into slightly smaller pieces and bring out the essential oil and the fragrance.

Place walnut pieces on a baking sheet and place in the oven. Toast for about 5 minutes, until slightly browned and fragrant. Remove from the oven. Cool completely. Chop coarsely and set aside.

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add lavender. Add cold butter and, using your fingers, work the butter into the flour mixture. Work quickly to incorporate the butter into the flour. The butter bits will be the size of small pebbles and oat flakes.

    Whisk together egg and buttermilk.

Toss the walnut into the dry ingredient mixture, and create a small well in the center of the flour and butter mixture. Pour in the buttermilk, all at once, and use a fork to incorporate the ingredients. Make sure that all of the flour bits are moistened by the egg and buttermilk.

Dump the shaggy dough onto a lightly floured work surface. Bring together, kneading lightly, until the dough forms a 1-inch thick rectangle. Use a knife to cut the dough into 8 equal pieces. Place on the baking sheet.

Brush biscuit tops with buttermilk and baker for 12 to 15 minutes, until lightly browned on top and firm-ish in the center. Let cool until almost entirely cool before topping with glaze.

To make the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar, honey, and milk. Whisk until smooth. Drizzle scones with glaze and sprinkle with a bit more lavender.

Scones are best served the day theyre made, thought theyre still delicious the second day.
