RM50++/pax Chinese New Year Feast @ The Ritz-Carlton, KL

A thoroughly brilliant concept was launched at the Ritz Carlton KL for Chinese New Year this 2012.

And deservingly, it was launched with much aplomb, featuring a full lion dance performance followed by an imperial spread by Ritzs accomplished banquent team.

As usual, preceding the festive seasons, I have commenced my rounds of Chinese New Year menu reviews as early as last month. Im certain I have much prosperity coming in, since I have lou sang god knows how many times. Hahah.. :)

While other F & B outlets attempts to arouse enthusiasm and wow discerning diners with culinary masterpieces, The Ritz Carlton surprises this year with their cool spin of the traditional dinner concept where they focuses instead on service and convenience; offering diners the benefit of dining on a scrumptious spread of the usual 8 courses Chinese dinners, but starting from a minumum number of 4 dining pax.

Now thats a deal thats hard to beat. And yes, you read right.
Youll get the full works; the yee sang, soup, meat, fish, vegetables, carbs and dessert minus the hassle of cracking your head on how to fill up the table to the usual prerequisite numbers of 8 to 10 diners.

What makes this deal even more ingenious was the amazing price of R M50++/pax; while still assuring the usual spread of a full 8 course meal will be served.

I admit Im personally in favour of this concept, since Im all too familiar with the torment of organising CNY dinners for clients and friends annually. The agonizing task of putting together the right amount of people while simultaneously ensuring that the group invited are of the correct clique can be vexing.

The 8-course Chinese New Year Feasts are available between January 23 27, 2012 for two sittings. 11.00am 3.30pm and 7.00pm 10.30pm in The Banquet Hall, Level Three of The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur. Each course is priced at RM50++ per person with a minimum of 4 persons per reservation.

Prosperity Yee Sang

vegetables and mushrooms

Braised grouper fillets with sliced meat
and mushrooms

Combinations of roasted chicken and
deep-fried prawns with oatmeal

Smoked sliced chicken with seasonal
vegetables

Fried rice with dried scallop and yam

Deep-fried Nian Gao with yam

Sweetened red bean cream with lotus seeds

As usual Ill start with my favourite, though I must say that I pretty much enjoyed 7 out of the total of 8 dishes served.
I just felt that the yee sang and the broccoli mushroom dish was too ordinary but I understand that its all an essential part of the set menu.
The best dish was undisputedlythe honey glazed cod fish. It was so beautifully flaky and moist. I just wished I could have more than just one portion!

The corn and seafood soup was very well prepared, with morsels of prawns, scallops, fish in a moderately starchy soup base. The fowl dish was commendable. Call me biased but I love chicken with pine nuts or cashew nuts. It lents a wonderful nutty aroma to the savoury kam heong sauce chicken.

While a fowl dish commonly comes in one preparation method, this set has a combo of sauce-based pan fried chicken and dry deep-fried chicken fillets. The deep-fried fillets were kept crispy as the plating cleverly s! eparates the kam heong chicken from the fried fillets.

Desserts (my favourite part of any meal, if you dont already know) were simple and satisfying enough. The fried Yam and Nian Gao and red bean cream were as chinese as it can get. While I thought the red bean used could have been of a better variety, the yam & nian gao was decent, with a more fragrant imported Taiwan yam being used instead of our local tubers.

Restoran Anwar Roda Baru @ Bandar Bukit Puchong for Kelantanese Food

I was driving back from Cyberjaya and out of nowhere a friend overtook me & signaled me for lunch. Alright as I was also thinking of lunch and followed them to this place. Restoran Anwar Roda Baru @ Bandar Bukit Puchong.Judging from the crowd this place is popular, people working in as far as Putrajaya and Cyberjaya would drive all the way to Anwar's place. The spread of foods is reasonably good.Ulam as good & healthy as usual.Squids with long beans simple and yummy.Balitong in curry - eating this can improve your kissing techniques.
The sayur-sayur we took for our meal spicy hot but wonderful.

Fried kampong chicken was delicious. This has to be their signature dish. I noticed there is another version but with rempah.Deep fried Ikan Keli (cat fish) with sambal belacan was fabulous.
Thanks to CKK for introducing this hidden place that serves good Kelantanese home cooked food and will definitely drop by again if I am around this area. Bagus bagus.....

The Gingerbread Man @ Ben's Independent Grocer, Publika, Solaris Dutamas KL

The Gingerbread Man is the bakery section in Ben's Independent Grocer. From the side of the wine cellar, you can actually get a view of the kitchen and watch the baking action. I asked the girl at the counter and she said the pastries and bread you see at The Gingerbread Man are baked first thing in the morning.

We love freshly baked bread and pastries so we were definitely interested in what they had to offer. The brioche looks really pretty but we decided to get the English Muffin for breakfast the next day (Christmas Eve) -- it's been a while since we last had that whereas I just made brioche this year. The pretty cakes caught our eye too, but since we've already had a dessert planned for Christmas, we forgo it this time.

Pretty cakes

Freshly baked daily

Bread

! English Muffin (RM2) -- it was good, we used it for a special breakfast we made for Christmas Eve morning (blogpost coming soon!)

Sweet pastries

We got a raisin twist (RM2) to share and it was really good! It was pillowy soft (literally!)... no chewing required!

Can't wait to try more the next time we visit Ben's Independent Grocer again.

Living Food & After Ate

A study in contrasts: two eateries opened this week on Jalan Tun Razak _ just a 15-minute walk from each other but offering food on opposite ends of the gastronomic spectrum.

First up, Living Food at Menara Tan & Tan. Despite its simple, somewhat sterile look, this cafe feels like one of KL's most innovative purveyors of health food, using intriguing ingredients to construct recipes that placate the palate & boost the body.

Noodles? Nope, it's zucchini, sliced into slivers & slathered with three spectacular sauces _ cashew, sun-dried tomato & tahini. Creamy yet springy, with tasting notes that somersault between pasty-nutty & salty-tangy, this vegetable is very rarely so enjoyable.

Move over, meat burgers; Living Food's signature patties of dehydrated mushrooms & seeds, sandwiched in tomatoes, guacamole & sprouts, are a herbivore's fantasy come true, fertile with feisty, force-of-nature flavors.

The cafe's business hours (8am-6pm weekdays & 10am-3pm Saturdays) make it tough for many to eat here, but takeaways are an option. Sealed in a paper bag, this Japanese-inspired salad of cabbage, cucumber, tomatoes, carrots & seaweed with wasabi tamari dressing no longer looks appetizing after some time, but it still tastes more wholesome than KFC's coleslaw.

Next, After Ate at The Intermark. The status update hit like a sugar rush _ at 5:34pm Tuesday, The BIG Group announced to its 2,000-plus Facebook followers that it had opened a "dessert lounge where sweet dreams come true."

The word spread faster than ants attack a picnic: After Ate _ which replaces T Forty Two at the Intermark stable of Tate & Estate _ is branded as a "playground for the ladies," promising the fairer sex that they can sip bubbly here while savoring saccharine sensations.

The most d! evilish of desserts: inspired by Snickers, the list of components on this plate speaks sinfully for itself. Gooey caramel mousse. Salted peanuts. Peanut chocolate cracker. And oh yeah, BIG's own milk chocolate ice cream. Heck, it's better than a Snickers bar.

Meringue chunks, fruits, fresh cream & orange jelly, with a quenelle of raspberry sorbet. Would work wonderfully with champagne, but After Ate currently serves bubbly only by the bottle. And since this was lunch, we were forced to resist the promotion of two bottles of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin for RM380++.

Wrapping up with nutrition-packed smoothies at Living Food _ thicker than anticipated & nowhere as disgusting as they sound. On the left: a blend of dragon fruit, banana, purple cabbage & chia; on the right: leafy greens, orange, pineapple, ginger & lemon.

There's more to come: both Living Food & After Ate will have new neighbors within weeks. At Menara Tan & Tan, Antipodean from Bangsar is launching a branch here soon (coffee!). And at The Intermark, expect The BIG Group to establish EST _ potentially a meat-lovers' paradise _ after the Lunar New Year.
