Last weekend

photo1

I was in Chicago last weekend for the Home and Housewares Show. It was incredible and so fun to come back to the city. Ive only been one other time and it was very cooold. But thankfully this weekend was filled with unusually warmer weather.

This is a picture I snapped with my phone.

Pretty, huh!

It has a couple of filters applied to it with a photo app I use called Camera+ to post on instagram.

I emjoy taking pics with my phone it makes snapping quick photos much easier than pulling out my main camera sometimes and you can do so much with them using photo apps. Theres a few iphone photos mixed in this post if youre wondering why they look a little different.

photo3

Heres the original city shot to see how much you can do with filters right on your phone. Big difference, huh.

I just wish I could use these filters in photoshop with the photos on my computer. That would be cool and addictive to play with.

The Home and Housewares Show was huge and full of so many exciting products, but its only open to the trade. I know. Bummer. Companies display their latest products for buyers and retailers from all over. But Im not either of those.

I was there for a signing with Chronicle Books who had! a booth with some of their cookbooks on display. When they asked me if I wanted to come, I said, heck ya!

Untitled-1

I had some unexpected encounters while I was there, too. Michael Ruhlman. Cool! He is really tall. I was on my tip toes. Dede Wilson She has 13 books under her belt with Karen Tack and Alan Richardson from Hello, Cupcake! Yay! And I got to see Maggy again and her mom, Pam from Three Many Cooks. Maggy, hope we get to talk longer next time.

Untitled-2

This is Judit from Spain. She carves amazing creations out of fruit and vegetables. She stopped by the booth to say hi and we talked cake pops and she was just so sweet and thankful for her Cake Pops Book that she stopped back by the booth later with fruit and carved these apples in like a minute right in front of us. It was incredible to watch. But thats just a sample. Check out her work here and be amazed. Yeah, the Alice in Wonderland is one of her creations.

IMG_9215

Walking around the show was pretty overwhelming. So many companies and even more products. I wanted to see as much as I could. I had a photographers badge, but still, many companies didnt want pi! ctures t aken because their products have not launched yet. So most of the time, I didnt bother. Here are a few pics that I did take and that were ok to show.

IMG_9366

Like these Cuisipro Mini Ice Cream Sandwich Makers. You press down on a cookie or brownie, then use the mold to scoop in the ice cream, and then press down on another cookie or brownie to sandwich it. Easy and super cute. And theyre tiny too which automatically makes them awesome.

IMG_9356

Check out these Fat Daddio cake pans. These are already in the marketplace. Ive talked about these cake pans before. This is a great visual of why I like them so much. So many sizes. And they probably have just as many shapes, too. Plus you can get them in different depths.

IMG_9361

Molds. These were at the New York Cake Booth and would be a lot of fun to play with using chocolate. She had a ton of different ones on display.

IMG_9227

Chicago Metallic Booth had these baking molds to make brownie bowls. Umm! , browni e bowls? Yes. please. I think these will be available soon.

IMG_9396

Look at this toaster from Dualit. I need.

IMG_9397

I need these, too. Would it be weird to have three?

photo4

Check out this new color coming out sometime soon from Kitchenaid. Crystal Blue. Love, love, love it!

photo2

They had a couple of mixers on display.

IMG_9376

Like just a few.

I wish I could show you everything I saw at the show.

Each booth was like its own little store full of stuff. Youd really like it. A lot. But I might go missing if I did that.

Since I wasnt home to bake, I made sure to get my sweets fix while I was in the city. Heres a few things I picked up.

photo7

Vosges Chocolates. I havent broken in to these yet. Ive been working on a couple of candy bars I bought from there first.

IMG_9177

Bacon Caramel Toffee anyone? I should have bought some of this stuff. Dangit.

photo8

I didnt know Magnolia had a bakery in Chicago, but I was excited to find it since I havent made it to the one in New York yet.

IMG_9233

Their cupcakes are just so pretty.

IMG_9240

I want to go to swirl school so I can do that frosting.

Peter and Mike from Chronicle split these with me as a pre-dinner snack. I think the vanilla vanilla was my favorite. Super sweet frosting. Just like I like it.

Untitled-3

Chicago also has Sprinkles Cupcakes. Yay! I love Sprinkles b! ecause e ach time Ive been to one, their cupcakes have been so good.

This time I wanted to try more than just a couple to see if I could find one that wasnt good. So I took these to the booth to share with the guys and we had a smackdown.

Well, it wasnt really a smackdown. Turns out there were a lot of winners. Actually, each one of the cupcakes were really good, but a few of them were great.

Ill tell you my favorites after we sampled all 12 in one sitting.

IMG_9291

Fourth place Banana (top row, second from left)
Third place Strawberry (second row, second from left)
Second place this is really tough to say because its one of my favorites that they make and I get it every time. But Im going with Red Velvet. (top row, first from left)
And first place drumroll, please The black and white (top row, far right) Ive had this one a couple of times now and it is fantastic. Fantastic enough to edge out their red velvet.

All the rest were really yummy, too. The Irish Cream, marshmallow, the chocolate cupcakes and the cinnamon sugar cupcake. My teeth hurt thinking about them all.

Anyway, try one sometime. I think youll love them.

Thats all of the randomness I have. Hope you enjoyed seeing a little bit of it from last weekend.

Vietnamese Food @ Kah Hing Sri Sinar, Segambut

It has been a long time since I visited Kah Hing and I supposed to check out a bicycle shop at Taman Sri Sinar but let's have lunch first. The strong and kau kau Vietnamese coffee.New dishes are found at Restoran Kah Hing. This is a new dish, pork chop noodle, sort of a dry version. The tasty was interesting tangy and delicious. You can also have the pork chop with rice. The old faithful fluffy spring roll of Kah Hing and a favourite for most people.I always like my food soupy especially when age is catching up and it was gorgeous. You either like it or hate it. I have learned to like this basil leaves and it tasted good with the plain soup of mine.Stewed pork trotter and an egg was another side order for the lunch.

Pata Tim (Patatim) Recipe

Cafe Bisqui @ Flinders Street

Coffee has always been quite important to me, especially at the start of a working day. I still remember starting work in my first company back in Malaysia, where we will takeaway ice coffee from the indian / mamak stall which was strong, sweet and even came with foam on some days. A cup would set me back RM2 or A$0.70. When we moved office, we were greeted with the usual Coffee Bean, Starbucks and Gloria Jeans. It got expensive and my coffee habit was reduced to 1-2 a week rather than 1 a day because a cup would set me back RM10 or A$3.30.

Then in my first job in Brisbane, I would stop by one of the better coffee places on the way to work to pick up a coffee everyday and paying dollar for dollar, 4 dollars for a cup seems not overly exorbitant.

Back to Melbourne, I had been trying out coffees around my office, some are slightly out of the way while others are on the way from the tram stop I get off at. After a week or two, I found a quaint little cafe by the name of Bisqui and that was it, I have been visiting them every day for the last couple of weeks.

Apart from the house blend which tastes pretty good, they also do a single origin that changes every other week. Unlike some places, the single origin doesn't come at a premium price and remains at $3.50 for a regular. If you are a regular, you can sign up for their "reward program" which basically gets you a free coffee after 8 coffees. I am still confused as to why they don't just print cards and get it stamped like traditionalists would do but how it works is you give them your name when you order and they keep records of it in their iPad, oh well.

We also had an opportunity to try their ham and cheese croissant which was lovely and sufficient for a quick bite before work but back to the coffee, it is well made and consistent, enough to keep me going for the day.

Did I mention the friendly service too? Nothing like a cheerful and smiling barista / waitress to greet you in the morning.

IMG_2097

I realise that this might not be the best of pictures, especially since he isn't looking too happy but oh well.

Cafe Bisqui on Urbanspoon

Verdict: 4 stars out of 5 stars. Good coffee, on the way to work, friendly service, nothing else I need to kick start my day.

Corral de la Moreria

Spain, Part VI: Reputedly Madrid's best restaurant offering flamenco performances.

The list of customers who've sat here for dinner shows is long & impressive, including the likes of Pablo Picasso, Lauren Bacall, Omar Shariff, Marlon Brando, Rock Hudson, Richard Gere, Michael Douglas, Hugh Grant & Sandra Bullock.

Although the songs & dances are exquisitely energetic, prices for this two-hour show are sadly steep for those of us who suffer when converting our currencies. A cover charge of 36 euros per person excludes the expensive a la carte food & drinks.

Artisan mi-cuit foie gras with cured Iberian acorn-fed ham carpaccio. Uber-thick slices of creamy terrine, paired with smooth, savory ham. What's not to love, right?

Grilled ox entrecote with padron pe! ppers. A fine slab of beef, still slightly bloody, for masculine appetites.

The paella was tasty comfort food, flooded with gigantic prawns & assorted meat.

Chocolate cake with Tahiti vanilla ice cream. Impeccably executed.

Caramelized rice pudding with tangerine sorbet. A terrific mix of tastes & textures.
