Comedy High @ Samplings on the Fourteenth, Berjaya Times Square Hotel Kuala Lumpur

Back during our dating days, we enjoyed going for comedy nights in London or our local theatre. Recently, we attended a comedy night called "Comedy High" at Samplings on the Fourteenth in KL on 17 January 2012 which pairs food with comedy. This was the first comedy night at Samplings, in collaboration with The Comedy Club KL.

For RM99++ per person, we got a 3-course Western meal plus 1 hour of stand-up comedy entertainment after. We have been to Samplings before during MIGF for its fine dining fare so we know the food is good.

Still retaining its fine dining ambience

Dinner starts at 6.30pm and show starts at 8.30pm and ends at 9.30pm. The meal is also inclusive of 1 glass of complimentary Carlsberg beer. Food portions are quite small, but sufficient to fill your stomach.

The view from Samplings on the Fourteenth

Looking down

We started off with the curried pumpkin cappuccino. Since we sat directly under the air-conditioner (hence it was pretty cold), I was certainly glad to be spooning mouthfuls of this warm, delicious soup. It was quite light (not the creamy type) as well. There was 2 choices for mains, and we took one each. Out of the two, Hubby's choice of Chermoula Marinated Chicken Breast served with fondant potatoes, garden vegetables and chicken jus was better. I took a few bites and despite it being the breast meat, the chicken was very moist and flavorful, owing to the chermoula marination. I had the pan fried sea bass fillet served with saffron potatoes and garden vegetables, which was also nice but would have been better if there was more sauce.

Dessert was a coconut tiramisu, which was also pretty good but it was too small for me. I like my desserts BIG!

The show started at sharp 8.30pm (hooray for punctuality!), hosted by a local talent Rizal van Geyzel. The 1 hour show featured comedians Steve Northcott and award-winning Phil Nichol (he was won "Best Comedy Show" in the Foster's Edinburgh Comedy Awards). I have to say we were fully entertained, the venue was filled with laughter from the diners, a truly enjoyable (and different) evening. I have posted 2 videos below (performance by Phil Nichol) to share with you guys.

For those interested, Samplings will be holding another Comedy Night on Valentine's Day (14 February 2012), which includes a five course set dinner menu, a glass of sparkl! ing wine , a rose for the lady and a glass of complimentary Carlsberg beer for RM158++. The next event will feature Australian comedian Greg Sullivan and local talents Andrew Netto and Rizal van Geyzel.

Service: Good. Since it was cold, the restaurant provided me with a scarf to use :)

Price: RM99++ for food and entertainment. Complimentary parking for diners.

My CNY Eve 2012

It's time to balik kampong and I have been doing this since 1977. I dread to do it every time.We went back on the eve of Chinese New Year and the traffic was fine. We could afford to detour to Ipoh for Dim Sum @ Foh San.
As expected therestaurantwas crowded and need to scramble for a table before you can eat.
Self service and lots to to eat.
Some of the food we ate. This year my father-in-law followed us back to Penang. My niece, Lilian arranged a buffet reunion dinner at Eastin Hotel @ Queensbay, Penang.

A time where I meet up with all my brothers & sister and their children and all have grown up.

Bee Leng, Ho Lin, Yong Lim & de big brother....
May this Year of the Dragon be a wonderful year for us. And Happy New Year to all my readers.

Sydney Fish Market @ Sydney

To those still celebrating Chinese New Year, I hope its been fun.

To those who got the day off on Australia Day, I am pretty sure you are either like me, stoning in front of your office laptop or still on holiday.

Anyways, I have been busily snapping photos of food we have been eating in Melbourne and hopefully soon enough I can actually download them onto my computer and start blogging about them.

Meanwhile, one more stop in Sydney.

We arrived in Sydney mid afternoon and with a couple of hours to burn before our host finished work, the Wife suggested we go to the Sydney Fish Market.

With 30 minutes before it closed, we walked in and my eyes opened wide. The amount of fresh seafood available and the cheaper prices is a far cry to what we use to get in Brisbane. For example a coral trout in an upmarket supermarket will cost you in the region of AUD50 a kg and most places charging you between AUD30-35 a kg. Guess what, its only AUD27 a kg in Sydney!

P1020244

Despite dinner being 2-3 hours away, I couldn't resist and we ordered a couple of items to snack on.

P1020243

Abalone sashimi, thats a first for us. It was sweet and crunchy, very nice to eat texturally but got a bit boring after a few bites.

P1020242

Somehow the oysters didn't taste all that fresh or either that it wasn't exactly the top grade ones that we got. Either way its been a while since we had some so we were happily popping them in our mouth with a squeeze of lemon.

P1020241

The yabbies were awesome though. Similar to the ama ebi you get in Japanese cuisine, the meat was so sweet and juicy. The problem is one prawn doesn't really have that much meat but weighs a lot since you pay by the gram. A prawn probably cost me AUD 5.

Overall I am happy to have finally visited an "icon" in Sydney and although we must have picked up some seafood that was probably lying around for a couple of hours, it was still pretty good.

The best part? Our friend said you can get even cheaper seafood elsewhere in Sydney!

Fingers crossed, let me find good seafood in Melbourne!

Pork Victorious @ Verona Trattoria

When Verona Trattoria opened last month, pork was a no-show. But the call of the hog is unconquerable; now, the savory scent of porcine entrees permeates this outlet.
Earlier entries on Verona Trattoria: December 29 & January 3.

Parma ham, usually served here with rock melon, but the kitchen ran out that evening & rested the prosciutto on a simple salad instead. Great to get the gustatory juices going.

Spaghetti aglio olio with fried pork belly. A minimal-fuss recipe, nicely executed. Pasta & protein make for perfect partners.

Roasted pork loin with orange sauce. Not the most tender cut, but ideal for a low-fat meal. Could even work for Chinese New Year festivities, thanks to the citrus twist.

Braised pork ribs, a sacrament of succulence, drenched in deliciously meaty gravy. With so many contenders jostling for the accolade of the Klang Valley's best ribs, Verona Trattoria's can't win, but it's in the Top 50.

Can't take pork? No fear; hop next door to Bistro a Table for Chef Isadora's latest.

Tian of char-grilled prawns _ big, bouncy crustaceans, with pomegranate for a tannic tang & avocado for a velveteen-rich creaminess.

Veal sweetbread with poached duck egg salad. We love sweetbread & we adore egg, but we very rarely experience the two together. A heavenly combo.

Baked onion with black autumn truffles, organic egg & Gruyere cheese. A robust, rustic recipe, employing ingredients with a soil-bound power to harness the rich flavors of nature.

Wrapping up with wine, finally available at Verona Trattoria at prices starting from RM80.
