CALIFORNIA, March 16 It's that time of the year again, when foods take on an unnaturally bright green hue and are manipulated into four-leaf clovers.

In the days leading up to St. Patrick's Day, fast food companies are releasing their tributes to the Irish holiday by coating, glossing and injecting foods with bright green colouring.

McDonald's, for instance, is bringing back an old St. Paddy's day favourite with its 32-year-old Shamrock Shake, a minty milkshake topped with whipped cream and a cherry. The shake will be available until March 25 across North America.

Arch-rival Burger King will also be offering free fries across the US on March 17 and March 18. Its contribution to the most holy of Irish holidays? Special St. Paddy's Sauce, aka green ketchup, courtesy of Heinz.

And Dunkin' Donuts has also released two limited edition donuts including the Lucky Mint, a glazed donut topped with chocolate icing and mint chocolate bark topping, as well as the Green Shamrock Donut coated in green icing and shamrock-shaped sprinkles, both of which will be available through to the end of March.
