Ten Japanese Fine Dining Restaurant, Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur

The award-winning Ten Japanese Fine Dining restaurant from Australia has arrived in KL. For my birthday, our plan was to visit Lafite but unfortunately they were closed for a private function. My back-up plan was Sage, but unfortunately they too were closed for a private function.

Since Ten was on the list of restaurants to visit, we made this my birthday celebration venue. (Yes, this is just one of many places we celebrated my birthday this year)

Solaris Dutamas is one of those places I dislike visiting cos of the parking situation -- it took us quite a while to find a parking space because most of the parking bays are reserved. Luckily, on that day, they opened the basement parking. Or else we would have given up and left. Ten was quite difficult to locate, but luckily the Information Counter inside Publika directed us there. It is located opposite Overtime, which is on the first floor of Publika.

Sashimi platter

Service here is good, and pretty efficient. For lunch, they only serve the set lunch menu and a few Chef's Specialty items. The set lunch price ranges from RM45 (grilled mackarel / chicken teriyaki / Inaniwa udon) to RM80 (wagyu steak), which is available from Tuesday to Friday.

Ten means "heaven" in Japanese.

! Ten is helmed by two experienced and highly-acclaimed chefs, Executive Chef Hiroshi Miura and Executive Sushi Chef Atsushi Nishibuchi. ChefMiura has Cha-Kaiseki (tea ceremony meal) and Ryotei training while Chef Nishibuchi has been trained in unique modern sushi technique known as Edomae Sushi (Tokyo-style sushi).

We sat pretty close to the sushi bar, so we got to see some sashimi slicing action by Chef Nishibuchi.

The set lunches come with an appetizer of the day, fresh green salad and chawanmushi. I think the appetizer we got was a type of seaweed, which was a combination of sweet and savoury flavours. Very good indeed.

Cha wan mushi - super smooth.

I opted for the Sashimi Gozen (RM65). Fish is air-flown from Japan twice a week and sourced from Singapore and local markets three days of the week. The sashimi platter I got with the set would rank as one of the best I've eaten -- incredibly fresh and a selection of premium seafood. The menu states 12 pieces of sashimi for this set, but there was 16 pieces in total. :) There was ocean trout, scallop, amaebi prawns, tuna, garoupa and mackarel. I definitely enjoyed this very much, plus presentation was good too. I'm really impressed with the sashimi here.

None of the common sashimi items here -- only the best :)

Hubby had the Wagyu Steak Gozen (RM80) which included 120g of Australian Wagyu Steak. Though the steak was nicely cooked to medium rare doneness, the marbling wasn't that high (ok blame it on the great steak we just had in Prime a couple of days beforehand) but tender enough to enjoy.

Both sets were served with steamed rice, Japanese seasonal pickles and a miso base hot pot.

The miso base hot pot had lots of yummy ingredients such as squid, prawn, crab claw, radish etc.

As a special birthday treat, Hubby ordered the3 parts tuna sashimi platter (RM95) for us to share. Each part came in 3 slices -- there was two types of tuna belly (chutoro and otoro) and akami. Our favorite was surprisingly the medium fatty tuna belly (chutoro). The otoro was also lovely, buttery and melt-in-the-mouth. Again, this was supremely fresh though the price was a bit high since they were very thinly sliced.

Otoro

Verdict: The price for the set lunch here is on the high side, but you get what you pay for -- high quality ingredients which tastes superior. The sashimi was very fresh, which we enjoyed very much. Even green tea is expensive here, at RM10 per person (free refills). However, I wouldn't mind coming back here whenever we feel like splurging on a good Japanese meal.
